SANYA, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) — "For 5,000 years, the Chinese have been known for their modesty, tolerance and resilience. These qualities are still present in the Chinese people today." Melissa Baydak, a Russian student studying in China, shared her understanding of China at a recent debate competition, and the audience applauded her words.

After graduating from Novosibirsk State University, Melissa entered Beijing Foreign Studies University in 2021, where she received a master's degree in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language. She is currently working on her PhD in linguistics while continuing her studies at the same Chinese university.

On the evening of September 13, the 2025 Chinese-language World University Debate Cup Finals were held in Sanya, Hainan Province, South China, where Melissa was invited to participate in the “Star Demonstration Match” and share her “China story.”

“To understand ‘change’ and ‘newness’ in China, you need to experience the present,” she noted in her speech. The ancient Chinese gave the world the compass, and today their descendants deftly navigate with the help of navigation apps on smartphones. “Firewood, rice, oil, salt, soy sauce, vinegar and tea” – a simple list of necessities for life, known as the “seven essentials” – are now instantly “materialized” thanks to “QR code payment,” “live sales” and express delivery in “thirty minutes.” It is thanks to these and other mind-blowing changes that astonish the world that one can truly understand modern China.

Melissa recalled that when she first arrived in China, the patient explanations of good-natured strangers about how to get there and how to drive showed her what friendliness was like among the Chinese. And the vendors at the market, with whom she eagerly haggled and then gave her a free bunch of green onions, revealed to her the “brightness of folk life” and the “warmth of human relations” in China. These warm moments and friendly details were more vivid and eloquent than any historical treatise, revealing to her the essence of the Chinese character, reflected in the sincere smiles of the Chinese.

On the other hand, Melissa believes that to understand China’s “fusion and innovation,” we also need to look to the present for answers, because the Chinese, using their remarkable imagination, “play” with the threads of history, weaving them into completely new, unprecedented forms. By delving into the past, you will learn about Beijing’s hutongs /a type of traditional medieval urban development/. But only by feeling the pulse of the present will you be able to go to City Walk and suddenly discover ultra-fashionable coffee shops in the labyrinths of old hutongs, serving a cheeky “Americano with soy milk” and a quirky “latte with candied fruit on a stick”. By turning to history, you will get acquainted with the incredible legacy of “hanfu” – the traditional clothing of the Chinese people. But only when you find yourself in modern China will you see how young people casually parade through shopping malls in “new Chinese style” outfits, feeling completely natural in them.

“This is the most fascinating and exciting part! And it allows me to understand China better,” Melissa concluded her speech.

BEIJING, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) — On Monday, the first day of China's trial visa-free regime for Russians with ordinary passports, Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport in east China received the first group of tourists from Russia to take advantage of the preferential measures, Chinanews.com.cn reported.

Ms. Garmaeva, who arrived in Shanghai on flight FM848, became the first Russian visa-free traveler to cross the border at the airport checkpoint. According to her, this is her second trip to China this year. Compared to obtaining a tourist visa, the visa-free policy made the trip more convenient and efficient, she said.

The Kustovs, passengers on the same flight, said they booked their plane tickets to Shanghai as soon as they learned China had introduced a visa-free regime for Russian citizens. They added that they planned to celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary during their trip around the country.

Let us recall that China has introduced a trial visa-free regime for Russian citizens holding regular foreign passports from September 15, 2025 to September 14, 2026.

Russian citizens holding valid regular foreign passports can visit China under a visa-free regime for the purposes of doing business, making tourist trips, visiting relatives and friends, exchanging visits, and for transit, while the period of their stay in China should not exceed 30 days, according to a statement from the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

According to available information, China currently unilaterally implements a visa-free regime for citizens of 47 countries. According to the Hongqiao Airport border control service, more than 140 thousand foreigners have entered China without a visa through its checkpoint since the beginning of this year.

BEIJING, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) — The number of freight trains running on China-Central Asia international freight railway routes in China in the first eight months of this year was 9,626, up 22.7 percent year-on-year, the People's Daily reported, citing a source with China Railways.

During the reporting period, these trains transported 751 thousand standard containers /TEU, twenty-foot equivalent unit/, which is 31.1 percent more than a year earlier. It is worth noting that as of August 31 of this year, since the launch of the relevant services, China-Central Asia freight trains have made a total of over 69 thousand trips, transporting 5.19 million TEU of cargo.

Thanks to the operation of the China-Laos Railway, the Trans-Caspian International Transport Corridor and other logistics channels, China-Central Asia freight train services now cover 128 prefecture-level cities in China, as well as more than 100 cities in 11 other Asian countries.

Currently, these trains transport 22 types of products, including new energy vehicles, photovoltaic products and mechanical equipment.

They bring cotton yarn, antimony ore, granulated wheat bran and barley from Central Asia, as well as tropical fruits, fertilizers and iron ore from Southeast Asia, to China, while Chinese-made products including electric vehicles, photovoltaic components, electronics and household goods reach markets in many countries and regions of Asia.

BEIJING, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) — More than 56 million parcels were exported through the Alashankou port in southwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in the first eight months of this year, authorities in the city said.

During the reporting period, the total value of goods exported in these parcels reached 4.39 billion yuan (approximately 617.8 million US dollars), up 71.4 percent from a year earlier.

According to Kong Xianglin, a representative of a local logistics company, their company has already sent more than 5 million parcels overseas through this channel since the beginning of this year, with the value of exported goods exceeding 300 million yuan and the volume of transactions doubling compared with the same period last year. He added that the company mainly handles parcels of home textiles and electronics this year, which are in constant demand and have an excellent reputation in overseas markets.

In order to expand the parcel handling capacity, an industrial park with an investment of approximately 1 billion yuan was established in Alashankou, a city on the border of China and Kazakhstan. The park includes a comprehensive service center, an international mail exchange point, and various warehouses for collecting and sorting cargo, as well as storing inventory, enabling it to fully cover the export-import models within the fuel and energy sector.

There are currently 15 resident companies in the fuel and energy sector in the park. Kong Xianglin noted that the strengthening and intensification of interaction and contacts between the city administration and customs and border control services not only significantly increased the efficiency of customs clearance procedures, but also contributed to reducing the operating costs of enterprises.

WASHINGTON, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) — U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday signed a memorandum to deploy the National Guard to Democrat-led Memphis, Tennessee, to combat crime.

“The city of Memphis, Tennessee, is suffering from a high rate of violent crime that exceeds the ability of local government to effectively respond,” said the memorandum signed by the president in the Oval Office of the White House.

In recent months, Memphis has become the third U.S. city to deploy National Guard troops, following Los Angeles and Washington, D.C.

The memorandum calls for the creation of a task force tasked with ensuring safety in Memphis, including through close coordination with state and local officials in Tennessee, Memphis and neighboring jurisdictions.

Memphis ranked first in the United States for violent crime in 2024, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, a White House fact sheet noted. “Memphis has some of the highest rates of murder, robbery, aggravated assault, and property crime in the nation,” the document said. –0–

In a statement, the KAAP stressed the need to create an “open, fair and non-discriminatory” international market environment to support technological progress and sustainable development of the automotive industry.

KAAP called on domestic and foreign enterprises to strengthen cooperation in the field of electrification and intellectualization to jointly promote the green, safe and high-quality development of the global automobile industry.

BEIJING, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) — The total number of freight trains sent from Changsha, capital of central China's Hunan Province, on China-Europe international freight train routes has exceeded 6,000 as of Sept. 10, 2025, since the service was launched there in October 2014, according to data from the General Administration of Customs.

According to information posted on the official website of the State Customs Service, during the specified period, 6,247 China-Europe freight trains were sent from Changsha, which transported more than 520 thousand standard containers /TEU/ with goods worth a total of about 118.21 billion yuan /about 16.61 billion US dollars/.

According to data from Changsha Customs, from January to August this year, Changsha handled 643 China-Europe round-trip freight trains, carrying 52,696 standard containers with goods worth 10.47 billion yuan. Specifically, in August, these three indicators, namely the number of trips, the number of TEUs and the value of goods transported, increased by 241.8 percent, 241.8 percent and 46.8 percent year-on-year, respectively.

At present, there are 12 regular routes in Changsha, covering 100 regions and 30 countries on the Eurasian continent. The range of goods transported is becoming wider and wider, from basic daily necessities and hardware to the construction equipment, automobiles and their spare parts that are in demand today. China-Europe train transportation services have created more convenient conditions and more opportunities for enterprises in Hunan and its neighboring regions to enter overseas markets, and provided important support for the construction of the Belt and Road and the stabilization of the international supply chain.

In order to ensure the convenient and efficient operation of China-Europe freight trains, Changsha Customs has taken a series of measures to continuously optimize service processes and improve customs clearance efficiency. This year, the customs has implemented the “inspection first and then dispatch” inspection model, which has reduced the inspection time of export goods to 30 minutes, and the overall logistics cost has been reduced by an average of 15 percent. -0-

DOHA, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) — Participants in the extraordinary summit of the Arab League (LAS) and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) held in Doha on Monday strongly condemned Israel's recent attack on Qatar and expressed full solidarity with the emirate.

The Arab-Islamic summit was chaired by Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. The final declaration called the Israeli strike on a residential area in Doha a “blatant act of aggression” that violated international law and posed a serious threat to regional and global peace.

Arab and Islamic leaders reaffirmed their full support for Qatar's sovereignty, security and stability and supported any measures the emirate might take in response to the attack. They stressed that the attack on a neutral mediator undermines ongoing ceasefire talks in Gaza and broader peace efforts.

In the final declaration, summit participants condemned “Israel’s crimes of genocide, ethnic cleansing, famine and siege, as well as settlement activity and expansionist policies,” warning that they jeopardize prospects for peace.

Summit participants called for urgent international action to hold Israel accountable, including imposing sanctions, halting arms sales and reviewing diplomatic and economic ties with Israel.

Arab and Islamic leaders also called on the OIC to coordinate efforts to suspend Israel's UN membership, citing its persistent "violations" of international law and UN resolutions. –0–
