Beijing, January 1 (Xinhua) — On Wednesday evening, the last day of 2025, a New Year's atmosphere permeated China's northeastern Jilin Province. Several thousand Russian tourists, who had entered China visa-free, gathered to celebrate the 2026 New Year with their Chinese friends at an event called "Experience Wintery Jilin Through Joyful Songs – Sino-Russian New Year's Eve 2026," local media reported.
Hunchun is the only city in Jilin Province with a border crossing with Russia. Thanks to the reciprocal visa-free regime between China and Russia, which began last year, cross-border tourism continues to grow in popularity.
Celebrating the New Year abroad has now become a fashionable choice among Russian tourists. On New Year's Eve, the 2026 Chinese-Russian New Year's Eve celebrations were held simultaneously in many cities in Jilin Province, including Changchun, Yanji, and Hunchun.
The event featured a number of celebratory programs, including intangible cultural heritage presentations, photo exhibitions, fireworks displays, literary and artistic performances, and Chinese and Russian family banquets, showcasing the charm of the two countries' cultures through different lenses.
As a reminder, the event, organized by the Jilin Provincial Association for Cultural Exchanges with Foreign Countries, aims to strengthen mutual understanding and friendship between the peoples of China and Russia, as well as deepen friendly exchanges between the peoples of the two countries. -0-
