NANJING, Nov. 11 (Xinhua) — By putting on virtual reality goggles, visitors are instantly transported to the underground mausoleum of Emperor Qin Shi Huang, where the silent terracotta army comes to life right before their eyes.

And at a base dedicated to the planet Mars, children, dressed in spacesuits, enter a makeshift Martian capsule, setting off on an exciting “space mission.”

These are not scenes from a science fiction film, but real episodes of “tech tourism” that can be seen in picturesque places in China.

The continued advancement of technologies such as artificial intelligence and virtual reality is creating a variety of new cultural and tourism experiences that are tangible, interactive, and scalable.

From light shows and drone displays to virtual reality and robot interactions, high-tech scenes set up in scenic locations and cultural centers are becoming must-see destinations for tourists looking to "experience the future."

According to an industry report, China's smart tourism market size will exceed 1.4 trillion yuan (about $197.6 billion) by the end of 2025.

Science museums and popular science institutions have also become some of the most popular family tourism destinations. At the Shenzhen Science and Technology Museum (South China), the "Exploring the Universe" exhibition allows children to "wander" through space, while the Qingdao Science and Technology Museum (East China) offers children virtual reality goggles to immerse themselves in the world of "underwater archaeology."

Active scientific tourism destinations are also gaining popularity. The FAST telescope, the world's largest single-band radio telescope with reflectors equivalent to 30 football fields (Guizhou Province, southwest China), offers visitors a unique combination of technology and natural beauty. Furthermore, each rocket launch attracts over 100,000 spectators to the observation deck of the Wenchang Satellite Launch Center (Hainan Province, southern China).

"This summer, I took my son specifically to see a rocket launch. He's crazy about space exploration and even dreams of going into space as a tourist one day," said Wang Xin, a resident of Jiangsu Province (eastern China).

According to online travel platform Ctrip, high-tech and heavy industry tours were the dark horse of this year's National Day weekend, with aerospace and automotive tours accounting for more than 20 percent of search queries.

"The integration of technology and cultural tourism transforms abstract technological concepts into tangible cultural symbols, allowing visitors to broaden their horizons and experience exquisite pleasure," said Li Guangchun, a researcher at the Institute of Industrial and Economic Sciences at Yangzhou University in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, East China.

"Modern tourists increasingly seek high emotional values and consumer experiences. Highly interactive technology platforms are becoming a new important direction in tourism development, and many projects perfectly match the preferences of Zoomers for social interactions and their growing desire for immersive cultural experiences," said Wu Guoping, head of the Wuxi Tourism Industry Association (Jiangsu Province).

For young people, "tech tourism" serves as a bridge between knowledge and interests. "The interactive events held by many science museums make complex technologies accessible and tangible, which is particularly effective in igniting adolescents' passion for science," noted Guo Zhe, curator of the China Science and Technology Museum.

"Travel used to be about quick sightseeing. Now, tourists' needs are taken more seriously, and travel has shifted from passive acceptance to active participation," notes Li Ranran, a tourist from Nanjing.

Experts noted that "tech tourism" is evolving from niche exploration to mass consumption, becoming a key driver of cultural tourism market activation and increased consumption. Taking industrial tourism as an example, it accounts for 10 to 15 percent of total tourism revenue globally, while in China this figure currently stands at less than 5 percent, indicating enormous growth potential.

“When technology ceases to be a mere auxiliary tool and becomes the main driver of change in cultural tourism, a new blue ocean of innovation will undoubtedly emerge for the industry beyond the traditional landscape of mountains and rivers,” Li Ranran added. -0-

BEIJING, Nov. 11 (Xinhua) — Chinese health authorities warned that the respiratory disease season has begun in the country, but said no unknown pathogens or newly emerging infectious diseases had been detected.

"All the pathogens identified so far are known common pathogens," said Wang Dayan, a researcher at the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, adding that influenza viruses, rhinoviruses, and respiratory syncytial viruses are the main causes of acute respiratory infections this season.

According to her, flu activity across the country remains moderate but continues to increase. The outbreak is expected to peak between mid-December and early January.

Southern Chinese provinces have seen higher transmission rates than northern regions, with influenza A/H3N2 accounting for more than 95 percent of all reported cases, Wang Dayan said.

Jiao Zhenquan, an official with China's National Disease Control and Prevention Administration, said acute respiratory infections are being monitored to track pathogen spread trends and viral mutations.

Health authorities across the country are urging the public to get vaccinated against influenza and other preventable diseases, while also raising awareness about disease prevention.

Local authorities across the country are stepping up efforts to protect high-risk groups.

In Beijing, free flu vaccinations are being offered to the elderly and school-aged children. In Tianjin, community-level health centers have launched pilot outpatient clinics for the treatment of respiratory infections in children, which include diagnosis and treatment, rapid testing, vaccinations, health education, and referral services for severe cases.

WASHINGTON, Nov. 11 (Xinhua) — The U.S. Senate on Monday evening passed a bill to keep the federal government funded until the end of January, ending the longest shutdown in history, now in its 41st day.

The bill passed with 60 votes in favor and 40 against. Eight Democrats supported the Republicans.

The approved bill allows funding for most federal agencies at current levels through January 30, and for the Department of Agriculture, the Department of Veterans Affairs, military construction, and congressional activities for the entire fiscal year.

The bill would provide full-year funding for the SNAP food assistance program, which was jeopardized by the extended government shutdown.

As part of the deal to end the shutdown, Senate Majority Leader John Thune promised Democratic senators a vote "no later than the second week of December" to extend subsidies under the Affordable Care Act.

Some Democrats objected, noting that Republicans had only promised to hold a vote and had not guaranteed the continuation of subsidies that were set to expire at the end of the year. Protecting health benefits remains a central demand of Democrats.

The approved package covers only three of the 12 appropriations bills Congress must pass each year.

The parties will continue negotiations on the remaining nine budget bills until the end of January. If agreement is not reached, the US government could face another shutdown.

MANILA, November 11 (Xinhua) — The death toll from two powerful storms that hit the Philippines in the past week has risen to 250, forcing millions of people to flee their homes.

Typhoon Kalmaegi, which struck the Philippines on November 4, triggered severe flooding and landslides in the central part of the country, leaving 232 people dead and 112 missing, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said on Tuesday.

Most of the victims lived in Cebu province, which is still reeling from the 6.9-magnitude earthquake that struck on September 30, the council said.

Also on Tuesday, the Office of Civil Defense said Super Typhoon Fung Wong, which struck Luzon island on Sunday, has killed at least 18 people.

According to officials, the two storms forced millions of residents to flee their homes. Residential buildings, farms, and key infrastructure, including roads and bridges, were destroyed.

Fung Wong became the 21st tropical cyclone to hit the Philippines this year, exceeding the annual average of 20 storms. –0–

Phnom Penh, November 11 (Xinhua) — Cambodia attracted a total of 889,089 Chinese tourists in the first nine months of 2025, up 46.3 percent year-on-year, according to a report from the Ministry of Tourism released Monday.

Of the 4.37 million international tourists who arrived in the kingdom in January-September this year, 20.3 percent were Chinese citizens.

This places China in third place in terms of tourist arrivals, surpassed by Thailand and Vietnam.

Turn Sinan, chairman of the Cambodian branch of the Pacific Asia Travel Association, said the increase in Chinese tourists indicates strong and growing interest from China.

"China's growing middle class, coupled with targeted marketing and expanded air travel routes, should further encourage Chinese tourists," he told Xinhua.

"However, maintaining this growth will depend on the sustainability of air travel, the simplification of the visa regime, and the continued attractiveness of Cambodia's tourism offerings to Chinese travelers," said T. Sinan.

He added that the 2025 Cambodia-China Tourism Year also gave further impetus to the influx of Chinese tourists to the kingdom.

Tourism is one of the four pillars supporting Cambodia's economy, along with garment, footwear and tourism exports, agriculture, construction and real estate. –0–

BELEM, Brazil, November 11 (Xinhua) — Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Monday called on countries to develop and implement ambitious nationally determined contributions (NDCs) to combat climate change.

"I call on countries to fulfill their commitments. This means developing and implementing ambitious nationally determined contributions," he said here at the opening of the 30th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP30).

Climate change is no longer a future threat, but a tragedy of today, the Brazilian leader declared. Noting that global warming brings pain and suffering, L.I. Lula da Silva said that holding the conference in the heart of the Amazon was a difficult but necessary task.

"I call on world leaders to accelerate action on climate change. We need a roadmap to enable humanity to equitably and sustainably transition away from fossil fuels, reverse deforestation, and mobilize resources to achieve this goal… so that words can be translated into action," he emphasized.

The President also called on the international community to put people at the center of the climate agenda. Global warming could plunge millions of people into hunger and poverty, setting back progress by decades, he said.

A just transition must help reduce the asymmetry between the Global North and South that has developed over centuries of emissions, the Brazilian leader said. –0–

BEIJING, November 11 (Xinhua) — On Tuesday, an Aviastar-TU cargo plane departed Lishe International Airport in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, for Moscow, officially launching the first regular direct cargo flight from that city to Russia, the Zhongguo Xinwenshe news agency reported.

According to available information, flights on this route will operate twice a week, on Tuesdays and Fridays. Compared to traditional sea freight, this route will help improve logistics efficiency by over 60 percent while significantly reducing supply chain costs.

The Lishe Airport border control point has opened a dedicated fast lane for cargo flights and operates a 24/7 uninterrupted customs clearance system, ensuring cargo planes undergo customs inspection upon arrival and depart immediately afterward.

As an important manufacturing base and foreign trade port in the Yangtze River Delta region, Ningbo is competitive in the production of high-value-added products such as lithium batteries, photovoltaic modules, and consumer electronics. These products have high requirements for timely transportation, technological standards, and supply chain stability, and a direct cargo flight will significantly shorten the logistics cycle.
