BELEM, Brazil, November 11 (Xinhua) — Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Monday called on countries to develop and implement ambitious nationally determined contributions (NDCs) to combat climate change.
"I call on countries to fulfill their commitments. This means developing and implementing ambitious nationally determined contributions," he said here at the opening of the 30th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP30).
Climate change is no longer a future threat, but a tragedy of today, the Brazilian leader declared. Noting that global warming brings pain and suffering, L.I. Lula da Silva said that holding the conference in the heart of the Amazon was a difficult but necessary task.
"I call on world leaders to accelerate action on climate change. We need a roadmap to enable humanity to equitably and sustainably transition away from fossil fuels, reverse deforestation, and mobilize resources to achieve this goal… so that words can be translated into action," he emphasized.
The President also called on the international community to put people at the center of the climate agenda. Global warming could plunge millions of people into hunger and poverty, setting back progress by decades, he said.
A just transition must help reduce the asymmetry between the Global North and South that has developed over centuries of emissions, the Brazilian leader said. –0–
