Taiyuan, February 2 (Xinhua) — In coal-rich Shanxi Province, northern China, the installed capacity of new and clean energy sources will exceed that of coal-fired power plants for the first time in 2025, according to the ongoing annual session of the provincial People's Congress.

According to the data, the installed capacity of new and clean energy sources increased by 18.29 GW year-on-year to 90.48 GW last year, accounting for 55.1 percent of the province's total installed power generation capacity.

Yangon, February 2 (Xinhua) — Myanmar has strengthened health monitoring and surveillance at Yangon International Airport to prevent the possible spread of the Nipah virus, the state-run daily The Global New Light of Myanmar reported on Monday.

Due to the ongoing Nipah virus outbreak in the Indian state of West Bengal, special attention is being paid to travelers arriving from India. SEOUL, February 2 (Xinhua) — Lawyers for former South Korean First Lady Kim Kong-hee filed an appeal on Monday against a trial court ruling sentencing her to 20 months in prison on corruption charges, the Renhap News Agency reported.

Kabul, February 2 (Xinhua) — Police seized weapons and ammunition from a vehicle and detained two suspected smugglers in Paktia Province in eastern Afghanistan, the provincial police department said in a statement on Monday.

The weapons, including a Kalashnikov assault rifle, two hand grenades and a quantity of ammunition, were found in a vehicle at a roadside checkpoint on Sunday afternoon, the statement said.

Police also arrested two people on suspicion of attempting to smuggle weapons and handed them over to judicial authorities for further investigation.

Beijing, February 2 (Xinhua) — China ranks first in Asia and fourth globally in terms of total wetland area. This achievement is thanks to the country's consistent efforts to protect and restore wetlands in recent years, the State Forestry and Grassland Administration (SFSA) announced on Monday.

It's worth noting that Monday marks World Wetlands Day. As one of the Earth's fundamental ecosystems, wetlands possess irreplaceable ecological, social, economic, and cultural value.

In recent years, China has steadily strengthened legal safeguards for wetland protection and improved its governance system by enacting relevant laws and regulations. To date, 21 provincial-level administrative units have developed or revised their wetland protection regulations.

China has established and continues to improve a multi-level wetland management system. According to the aforementioned administration, 82 wetlands have been designated as important wetlands of international significance, 80 wetlands of national significance, and 1,208 wetlands are important provincial wetlands.

China has 22 cities accredited as International Wetland Cities, the highest number in the world. Furthermore, the country has established 903 national wetland parks, approximately 90 percent of which offer free public access, attracting approximately 320 million visitors annually.

During the 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026-2030), China plans to further improve the legal framework for wetlands, strengthen monitoring and early warning systems, and accelerate the establishment of mechanisms to realize the economic value of wetland ecological products, the State Forestry Agency reported.
