Taiyuan, February 2 (Xinhua) — In coal-rich Shanxi Province, northern China, the installed capacity of new and clean energy sources will exceed that of coal-fired power plants for the first time in 2025, according to the ongoing annual session of the provincial People's Congress.

According to the data, the installed capacity of new and clean energy sources increased by 18.29 GW year-on-year to 90.48 GW last year, accounting for 55.1 percent of the province's total installed power generation capacity.

Between 2021 and 2025, the installed capacity of all power plants in Shanxi reached 164 GW. Electricity generated in Shanxi was supplied to 24 provincial-level administrative units, making it one of the country's leaders in this indicator.

Last year, the province's annual electricity generation from new energy sources exceeded 100 billion kWh for the first time, reaching 118 billion kWh, according to the Shanxi Electric Power Company of China National Grid Corporation (State Grid).

The province is transforming coal-mining subsidence areas, characterized by subsidence and collapse of the surface after underground coal resources are depleted, into new energy bases.

As noted at the session, Shanxi Province will continue to actively promote energy transition in the next five years and will strive to increase the installed capacity of renewable energy sources by 100 million kW. -0-

BEIJING, February 2 (Xinhua) — China will launch a special nine-day shopping promotion during the Spring Festival (Chinese New Year) holiday, aiming to boost consumption, enrich cultural life, and stimulate market activity, the Ministry of Commerce announced on Monday.

According to an action plan released by the Ministry of Commerce and eight other government departments, the campaign, which will run from February 15 to 23, includes activities in six areas, including food service, hospitality, transportation, tourism, shopping and entertainment.

Measures include promoting festive dinners and banquets for family gatherings, providing discounts on household appliances and home renovations, increasing transportation capacity, organizing nationwide cultural and tourism consumption events, and launching promotions in major commercial areas and discounts on movie tickets.

Particular emphasis is also placed on expanding the trade-in program for replacing old consumer goods with new ones, with increased subsidies for consumer goods to support physical retail stores.

In addition, the government intends to optimize the payment environment for overseas travelers by improving payment services via bank cards, mobile apps, and cash to ensure a seamless experience for incoming tourists.

The Spring Festival period, the most important traditional holiday in China, is usually a peak season for consumer spending driven by family gatherings, travel, dining, entertainment and gift buying.

As domestic demand remains a key driver of economic growth, authorities have introduced a range of policy measures aimed at further unlocking consumer potential and stabilizing market expectations during the holiday season. -0-

Lanzhou, February 2 (Xinhua) — As the 2026 Spring Festival (Chunjie, or Lunar New Year) approaches, the rehearsal hall for the immersive show "Yuedong Dunhuang" in Dunhuang, northwest China's Gansu Province, remains brightly lit. Dancers are honing their moves for the Gansu Province New Year's Gala while also preparing for international tours to countries like Cuba and Panama.

As a cave-like immersion show, "Yuedong Dunhuang" offers audiences an audiovisual and interactive experience. The performance, based on Dunhuang frescoes and documents, features replicas of ancient musical instruments and dancers in colorful costumes. Music and dance numbers transport audiences to the era of the Silk Road, where civilizations and arts intertwined.

In the cave immersion space, where ancient music plays and performers dance, several foreign actors particularly attract attention, causing many guests to stop and watch.

"Dunhuang culture is a typical example of the harmonious coexistence of various civilizations, and 'Yuedong Dunhuang' continues this spirit of inclusivity that has existed since ancient times," said Wang Qi, deputy director of the marketing and promotion center for the show. She added that the participation of foreign actors makes scenes related to the Silk Road more realistic and vibrant.

Since its premiere in June 2023, the show "Yuedong Dunhuang" has been performed more than 2,600 times, and related events have attracted more than 1.25 million viewers. -0-

BEIJING, Feb. 2 (Xinhua) — The Shenzhou 21 crew members aboard China's Tiangong space station have successfully completed their first three months in space, with all planned tasks completed smoothly, according to the China Manned Spacecraft Administration (CMSA).

On Sunday evening, a video report from China Media Corporation showed that to combat the physical effects of weightlessness, the crew, consisting of mission commander pilot Zhang Lu, flight engineer Wu Fei, and payload specialist Zhang Hongzhang, conducted a lower limb muscle stimulation test.

Using specialized equipment such as bionic adhesive boots, they trained to stimulate their leg muscles and collected data to study muscle adaptation in space.

In the field of space medical research, they have made progress in a pharmacokinetics project that studies how the human body metabolizes medications in space. To do this, they collect saliva samples and send them back to Earth for analysis, providing important data for managing the use of medications in space.

The three cosmonauts also completed a series of human psychology tests, including assessments of human-computer trust, emotional state in orbit, and decision-making ability in emergency situations.

In the field of physical sciences related to microgravity, crew members performed maintenance and repair of experimental equipment. According to the report, this process included cleaning and replacing samples inside a containerless experimental cabinet—a device that holds materials in zero gravity to study their properties without the influence of a container.

Beyond scientific experiments, regular health monitoring remains a priority, as a disciplined exercise regimen in orbit is key to ensuring crew members remain in optimal condition throughout the mission.

The cosmonauts have already undergone numerous medical examinations, including dynamic electrocardiograms, blood pressure monitoring, ultrasound scans, and bone density measurements, which have shown that they are in good health, the report notes.

The Shenzhou-21 manned spacecraft was launched from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China on October 31, 2025. -0-

Due to the ongoing Nipah virus outbreak in the Indian state of West Bengal, special attention is being paid to travelers arriving from India. Medical screenings are being conducted to identify fever and other symptoms associated with the virus, according to a statement from the country's Ministry of Health.

The department stated that health screening of passengers arriving from abroad is carried out in accordance with established guidelines regarding infectious diseases that may lead to public health emergencies.

As part of public awareness efforts, information leaflets are being distributed to travelers, and informational posters have been displayed at the airport. Disease prevention and control measures are also being implemented in collaboration with relevant airport services, the statement said.

Similar enhanced surveillance and screening measures are also being implemented at Mandalay International Airport, the ministry said.

There are currently no cases of Nipah virus infection registered in Myanmar, the department reported.

Beijing, February 2 (Xinhua) — China ranks first in Asia and fourth globally in terms of total wetland area. This achievement is thanks to the country's consistent efforts to protect and restore wetlands in recent years, the State Forestry and Grassland Administration (SFSA) announced on Monday.

It's worth noting that Monday marks World Wetlands Day. As one of the Earth's fundamental ecosystems, wetlands possess irreplaceable ecological, social, economic, and cultural value.

In recent years, China has steadily strengthened legal safeguards for wetland protection and improved its governance system by enacting relevant laws and regulations. To date, 21 provincial-level administrative units have developed or revised their wetland protection regulations.

China has established and continues to improve a multi-level wetland management system. According to the aforementioned administration, 82 wetlands have been designated as important wetlands of international significance, 80 wetlands of national significance, and 1,208 wetlands are important provincial wetlands.

China has 22 cities accredited as International Wetland Cities, the highest number in the world. Furthermore, the country has established 903 national wetland parks, approximately 90 percent of which offer free public access, attracting approximately 320 million visitors annually.

During the 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026-2030), China plans to further improve the legal framework for wetlands, strengthen monitoring and early warning systems, and accelerate the establishment of mechanisms to realize the economic value of wetland ecological products, the State Forestry Agency reported.
