BEIJING, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) — China's Ministry of Water Resources and the China Meteorological Administration issued the highest "red" alert on Tuesday evening over the threat of mountain torrents as heavy rains continued in parts of the country.

According to the above-mentioned departments, there is a high probability of mountain torrents in the central and western regions of Guangdong Province (South China) from 8:00 p.m. on August 5 to 8:00 p.m. on August 6.

Both agencies also issued orange alerts for torrential rains in some other parts of Guangdong province and south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

It is noted that short-term heavy rains can trigger the formation of mountain streams in other regions as well.

Local authorities have been instructed to conduct close real-time weather monitoring, issue early warnings of possible flooding, prepare evacuation plans and take appropriate preventive measures to reduce risks. –0–

WASHINGTON, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) — The European Union is "too weak" in negotiations with the United States on new tariffs, German Vice Chancellor and Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil said Monday during a visit to Washington.

"I think we were too weak. We cannot be satisfied with the result achieved," L. Klingbeil told reporters before a meeting with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.

The German minister's statement was a comment on the agreement reached late last month by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and US President Donald Trump. Under the deal, most EU imports to the US will be subject to a 15% tariff, while the EU will also increase its purchases of US energy resources and its investments in the US.

The deal has drawn criticism across Europe, with opponents warning that even a 15 percent tariff would cause serious damage to the European economy.

A day after the bilateral deal was announced, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz echoed the sentiment, saying Europe's largest economy would suffer "significant damage" from the Brussels-Washington agreement. Merz stressed that the negative impact "would not be limited to Germany and Europe — we will see the consequences of this trade policy in America as well." –0–

Moscow, August 5 /Xinhua/ — Russia does not consider US threats against India to be legitimate, Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Tuesday. This is how he commented on the reaction of the Indian Foreign Ministry to US demands: the ministry stressed that India will defend its national interests and will not stop importing Russian oil despite US threats.

"We hear many statements that are actually threats. Attempts to force countries to stop trade relations with Russia. We do not consider such statements to be legitimate," noted D. Peskov.

“We believe that sovereign countries should have and do have the right to choose their own trade partners, partners in trade and economic cooperation, and to choose those trade and economic cooperation regimes that are in the interests of a particular country,” the press secretary of the Russian president emphasized.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump said on social media that he would significantly increase customs duties on India as a retaliatory measure for the import and resale of Russian oil.

On Monday, the Indian Foreign Ministry issued a statement calling the US and EU attacks on India's import of Russian oil unjustified, as Western countries had previously encouraged such trade to bolster stability in global energy markets. They also continue to buy goods and services from Russia. –0–

BEIJING, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) — The steady pace of economic growth suggests that the gross regional product (GRP) of the Xizang Autonomous Region will exceed 300 billion yuan (about 42 billion U.S. dollars) this year, regional Party secretary Wang Junzheng said Tuesday.

By the end of 2024, Xijiang's GRP will reach 276.5 billion yuan, 155 times more than in 1965, when the autonomous region was established, with an average annual growth rate of 8.9 percent, Wang Junzheng said at a press conference in Beijing dedicated to the 60th anniversary of the Xijiang Autonomous Region.

As he noted, it took Xizang 50 years for the GRP to exceed 100 billion yuan for the first time, but the second 100 billion mark was reached in just six years.

Since 2021, continuous and sustained efforts have ensured further expansion of the local economy, accompanied by significant improvements in the quality and efficiency of growth.

There is a rapid development of modern production, including clean energy, cultural tourism and light industry with high-mountain specifics, thanks to which a modern production system has practically been formed, said Wang Junzheng. Xijiang Autonomous Region continues to increase its development potential based on its own efforts, and in terms of growth rates of key economic indicators, it has been among the leaders in the country for several years in a row, Wang Junzheng added. -0-
