NEW YORK, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) — U.S. President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that tariffs on U.S. imports of microchips and pharmaceuticals will be imposed "in the next week or so."

“We’ll put a small tariff on pharmaceuticals first,” Trump said in an interview with CNBC. “But in a year, a year and a half at the most, it’ll go up to 150 percent, and then to 250 percent, because we want pharmaceuticals to be made in our country.”

According to the American leader, a statement will also be made in the near future on the issue of duties on semiconductor products and microcircuits.

D. Trump added that his plans to introduce customs duties are still far from complete.

The announcement comes days after the U.S. administration imposed new tariffs on imports from a number of countries. They followed the release of a disappointing July jobs report on Aug. 1 that not only missed market expectations but also included downward revisions to employment figures for both June and May. –0–

Moscow, August 5 (Xinhua) — The BRICS motor rally from Yekaterinburg to Moscow will take place from August 9 to 15, the organizers of the motor rally announced at a press conference in Moscow on Tuesday.

The event is timed to coincide with the opening of a new section of the M-12 "Vostok" highway Dyurtyuli – Achit. The section, more than 275 km long, opened in mid-July, became a continuation of the high-speed highway from St. Petersburg to Yekaterinburg.

"The launch of this road is one of the key links in the implementation of the project to create the international transport corridor "West-East". Of course, the launch of this project will have a huge socio-economic effect on the entire transport system of the country," said Igor Koval, First Deputy Chairman of the Board of the Russian state company "Avtodor". According to him, the key objective of the motor rally is to demonstrate to foreign partners the achievements in the development of the road and transport infrastructure of Russia.

The 1,600 km route will pass through the territory of six Russian regions. During the motor rally, business and cultural events are planned, during which participants will be able to get acquainted with the industrial, investment, tourism and cultural potential of the subjects of the Russian Federation.

50 cars have applied to participate in the rally. Representatives of 20 BRICS countries and partner countries have already confirmed their participation.

As Chairman of the Union of Chinese Entrepreneurs in Russia Zhou Liqun emphasized, the upcoming BRICS motor rally is an event of high international level. He reported that many Chinese companies operating in Russia supported this project. “The motor rally is not only an example of business cooperation, but also humanitarian and cultural interaction between Russia, China and the BRICS countries. I sincerely wish that the BRICS motor rally will unite us not only as a business community, but also as true friends,” he added, proposing to make this event annual.

The main organizers of the motor rally were the National Association of Infrastructure Companies (NAIC) and the state company Avtodor. The project was supported by the BRICS Business Council, the Russian Foreign Ministry and the Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry. –0–

TEHRAN, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) — Iranian First Vice President Mohammad Reza Aref on Tuesday accused the United States of supporting Israeli "aggression" against Iran despite no evidence that Iran's nuclear program is not peaceful.

During a conversation with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on the sidelines of a UN conference in Turkmenistan, M.R. Aref said Iran was complying with international rules and agreed to the ceasefire announced on June 24 solely for humanitarian reasons after 12 days of armed confrontation.

Iran's vice president has warned that repeated acts of aggression could destabilize West Asia. He criticized the UN's inaction, saying "more adequate action" could have prevented the current crisis in Gaza.

M.R. Aref described the situation in the Palestinian enclave as “barbaric,” calling on the UN to restrain Israel.

A. Guterres, for his part, called the US and Israeli strikes on Iran illegal, emphasized the priority of diplomacy for resolving the issue of the Iranian nuclear program, and noted the importance of respecting the rights of the Palestinians.

The Iran-Israel conflict began on June 13, when Israel attacked Iran's nuclear and military facilities. Then, on June 22, the United States bombed Iranian facilities in Natanz, Fordow, and Isfahan. Iran launched retaliatory attacks against both Israel and the United States, leading to a ceasefire agreement on June 24. –0–

GUANGZHOU, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) — Heavy rains have disrupted traffic on highways and rural roads in south China's Guangdong Province, prompting authorities to step up emergency response measures amid heightened flood risks.

Three sections of expressways, six sections of national and provincial highways and 25 rural roads remained closed due to heavy rain as of 5 p.m. Tuesday, according to the provincial Department of Transport.

Emergency teams have been dispatched to restore damaged highways.

After meteorological and hydrological forecasts warned of continued heavy rain and rising river levels, the flood alert in Guangdong province was raised to Level 2, the second-highest in China's four-tier system, at 2 p.m. on Tuesday.

As of 10:00 a.m., 16 rivers in the province had already exceeded dangerous levels.

Rainfall is expected to continue in parts of Guangdong Province on August 6, then ease on August 7 and 8.

In southern China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, flood levels at three hydrological stations have exceeded warning levels, local authorities said. The Nankang hydrological station on the Nankangjiang River recorded its highest flood level since 2017, while the Xinlong station on the Wulaihe River recorded its highest flood level since 2018, the regional hydrological department said. –0–

BEIJING, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) — China has issued a policy document to strengthen financial support for new-type industrialization, the People's Bank of China (PBOC) said Tuesday.

A document released by the PBOC and six other government departments said China should have a broadly defined financial system in place by 2027 that supports advanced, intelligent and green manufacturing.

According to the directive, by 2027, the effective credit demand of manufacturing enterprises must be fully satisfied, while achieving sustainable growth in the volume of issuance and the number of issuers of bonds of manufacturing enterprises, as well as significant progress in equity financing.

The document provides for the optimization of financial instruments to promote breakthroughs in key technologies, attracting long-term assets and developing “patient capital” for the purpose of accelerating the commercialization of scientific and technological achievements. It is also planned to improve financial services for key enterprises to form safer and more independent production chains.

In addition, the directive calls for the use of financial mechanisms to support the modernization of traditional industries, the expansion of emerging industries and the strategic planning of industries of the future. –0–
