Beijing, November 11 (Xinhua) — China calls on the European Union to ensure a fair, transparent, and non-discriminatory business environment for Chinese companies and to prevent these enterprises from undermining their confidence in investing in Europe, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said on Tuesday.
The Chinese diplomat made the call at a departmental briefing, commenting at a journalist's request on a report that the European Commission is currently exploring ways to force EU member states to gradually phase out the use of equipment from Chinese companies Huawei Technologies and ZTE Corporation in eurozone telecommunications networks.
Lin Jian noted that Chinese companies conduct their commercial activities in Europe in accordance with the law, provide high-quality goods and services to European residents, and make a positive contribution to the socio-economic development and employment of the population of EU countries.
According to the official representative, forced restrictions or bans on companies' access to the market by administrative means without any legal or factual basis grossly violate market principles and the rules of fair competition.
As Lin Jian pointed out, evidence shows that the dismantling of high-quality and secure equipment from Chinese telecommunications companies in individual countries not only hinders their domestic technological development, but also leads to significant financial losses.
“Transferring trade issues to the security and political realm will hinder technological progress and economic development, benefiting no one,” the diplomat added. –0–
