Beijing, November 11 (Xinhua) — According to data from customs at Harbin Taiping International Airport, the capital of Heilongjiang Province, northeast China, from January to October 2025, customs officers at the airport's checkpoint processed 507,000 passenger entries and exits, a 21.8 percent increase compared to the same period last year. This was reported by the Harbin Daily newspaper on Tuesday.
Since the entry into force of China's visa-free entry regime for Russian citizens with regular passports on September 15, 2025, the number of Russian passengers entering China through this border crossing has increased by 47.6 percent year-on-year, driving passenger traffic at this checkpoint.
In response to growing passenger traffic, Taiping Airport Customs implemented a smart screening system and optimized its customs clearance services. By streamlining the customs clearance process, the time required for each passenger has been reduced to just 10 seconds, and the hourly throughput of one lane for screening and releasing passengers has increased to 300.
"I got through customs very quickly using the face scanning feature!" said Anna, a tourist from Russia.
As a reminder, China has introduced a trial visa-free regime for Russian citizens holding regular passports from September 15, 2025 to September 14, 2026.
Russian citizens holding valid passports may visit China visa-free for business, tourism, visiting relatives and friends, exchanging visits, and transit purposes. Their stay in China should not exceed 30 days.
