Tehran, February 2 (Xinhua) — Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has ordered the start of nuclear talks with the United States, the semi-official Iranian news agency Fars reported on Monday, citing an unnamed government source.

Quoting Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei's statement earlier in the day, Fars added that talks between Tehran and Washington are likely to take place in Turkey in the next few days.

Meanwhile, Iran's semi-official Tasnim news agency, citing an anonymous source familiar with the matter, also confirmed that senior officials from the two sides are likely to begin talks in the coming days.

According to Tasnim, the talks will likely take place between Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and US President Donald Trump's special envoy, Steven Witkoff. The agency added that the venue and exact date of the meeting have not yet been finalized.

These events are taking place against a backdrop of continuing high tensions between Tehran and Washington amid the escalation of US military activity in the Middle East. In late January, the Trump administration dispatched a carrier strike group and several warships to the region.
