Astana, October 10 (Xinhua) — The second meeting of the board of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea was held in Astana under the chairmanship of Kazakhstan. Joint measures for the rational use of water resources and environmental improvement of the region were discussed, the Kazinform news agency reported on Friday.
The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister of Kazakhstan Kanat Bozumbayev, Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Nurzhan Nurzhigitov, Advisor to the President of Uzbekistan Shukhrat Ganiev, Deputy Prime Minister of Tajikistan Sulaimon Ziyozoda, and Minister of Agriculture of Turkmenistan Charyar Chetiev. Kyrgyzstan's Abdybai Djailoobayev attended as an observer.
Meeting participants reviewed preparations for the upcoming meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Fund's Founding Members, the implementation of the Executive Committee's Work Plan for Kazakhstan's 2024-2026 chairmanship, and the implementation of regional environmental programs. According to the Fund, 42 environmental projects are being implemented in the Aral Sea basin, and two new grant initiatives are being developed with World Bank support.
During the meeting, the Fund’s Executive Committee’s proposal to declare March 26 as the International Day of the Aral Sea and the Amu Darya and Syr Darya Rivers was supported. –0–
