ALMATY, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) — Construction work on Kazakhstan's first nuclear power plant has officially started near the village of Ulken in the Almaty region of southern Kazakhstan, Kazinform news agency reported on Friday.

According to the head of the Kazakh Atomic Energy Agency, Almasadam Satkaliyev, the NPP construction project is being implemented with broad public support.

"The total investment in the project will be around 14-15 billion dollars. An additional 1 billion dollars will be allocated for the construction of social facilities and modern infrastructure," A. Satkaliev said.

The ceremony also saw the launch of drilling operations to collect soil. The capsule containing the samples will be handed over to the Russian side for research.

Completion of construction of the first nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan is planned for 2035-2036.
