BEIJING, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) — Chinese Defense Ministry spokesperson Jiang Bin on Friday criticized the Philippines for currying favor with external forces in an attempt to destabilize the South China Sea for its own gains.

Jiang Bin made the remarks at a departmental press briefing while commenting at a journalist's request on the Philippine military's comments on the recent joint Philippine-Indian naval exercises near Huangyan Dao Island in the South China Sea.

“We oppose using the South China Sea issue as a pretext to provoke confrontation and believe that military cooperation between relevant countries should not be directed against any third party and undermine regional peace and stability,” the official representative stressed.

He called on the Philippines to stop ganging up with other parties to stir up tensions in the South China Sea and return to the right path of resolving differences through dialogue and consultation. –0–
