DAMASCUS, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) — Syria's interim government's chief diplomat Asaad al-Shibani met with an Israeli delegation in Paris on Tuesday to discuss efforts to reduce tensions and promote stability in southern Syria, state news agency SANA reported.

According to him, the negotiators focused on de-escalation, non-interference in Syria's internal affairs and a return to the 1974 Israel-Syria disengagement agreement that has governed the border situation for decades. They also discussed ways to monitor the ceasefire in As-Suwayda province.

The meeting, mediated by the US, is part of broader diplomatic efforts to protect Syria's territorial integrity and strengthen regional security, SANA said. -0-

CAIRO, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) — Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Aty on Tuesday called on the international community to pressure Israel to implement a ceasefire in Gaza, saying it would help ease the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

According to a statement from Egypt's Foreign Ministry, Abdel Aty made the remarks in separate telephone conversations with British Foreign Secretary David Lammy, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, European Foreign Minister Kaya Kallas and Palestinian Vice President Hussein al-Sheikh on the Palestinian issue.

B. Abdel Aty spoke about the mediation efforts undertaken by Egypt in cooperation with Qatar and the United States to achieve a ceasefire, facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid and release a number of hostages and prisoners, the statement said.

He also touched on the ongoing preparations for an international conference on the speedy reconstruction of Gaza, which will be held as soon as a ceasefire agreement is reached.

According to the statement, the officials reaffirmed their full support for Egypt's efforts and its role in strengthening security and stability in the region.

Hamas and other Palestinian factions announced their agreement to a ceasefire proposal in Gaza presented by Egyptian and Qatari mediators, according to a Hamas statement released on Monday.

Egyptian sources confirmed to Egypt's Al-Qahira TV that the proposal includes a temporary halt to military operations and the redeployment of Israeli troops to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid sufficient to meet the needs of the Gaza Strip.

The ceasefire includes a prisoner exchange, including the release of 10 living Israeli prisoners and the transfer of 18 bodies in exchange for Palestinian prisoners.

However, a senior Israeli official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said on Tuesday that Israel was demanding the release of all hostages still being held in Gaza. -0-

ADDIS ABABA, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) — Construction of the Miso-Dire Dawa Expressway, a major infrastructure project under the Ethiopia-Djibouti Transport Corridor, began in the eastern Ethiopian city of Dire Dawa on Tuesday.

At the project launch ceremony, Ethiopian Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Tiruneh said that the creation of reliable road infrastructure is a vital driving force and factor in the country's socio-economic development.

“For developing countries like Ethiopia, road infrastructure is essential to improve people’s living standards and economic growth. Therefore, the launch of the Miso-Dire Dawa Expressway project reflects the commitment of the Ethiopian government to modernize transport,” he said.

According to him, in Ethiopia, more than 90 percent of the transportation of people and goods is done by road. The Miso-Dire Dawa Expressway will play an important role in strengthening economic, social and political interactions between regions and communities.

The project is being implemented under contract with China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) and China's Sichuan Road and Bridge Group. The expressway will be 144 km long and will be completed in four years.

“This expressway is not only a vital project for ensuring connectivity in East Africa and boosting Ethiopia’s economic and social development, but also a shining example of China-Ethiopia cooperation, common development and common prosperity,” CCECC Director General Chen Sichang said at the ceremony. –0–

LJUBLJANA, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) — Slovenia has sent its first batch of humanitarian aid for Gaza to Jordan, the country's Defense Ministry said on Tuesday.

The aid, consisting of food and blankets from the Defense Department's stockpile, was delivered by a Spartan military cargo plane. Two more flights are planned, and all deliveries are expected to be completed by the end of August.

According to the department, the cargo arrived at a military airfield near Amman in Jordan.

Defence Minister Borut Sajovic stressed the importance of the operation, noting that civilians in Gaza have endured nearly two years of conflict with limited humanitarian aid reaching the enclave.

Earlier this month, the Slovenian government approved additional humanitarian aid for Gaza worth 870,500 euros (about $1.01 million), mostly in the form of food and blankets. –0–

In the Kalininsky district of St. Petersburg, repair work on Khlopina Street has been completed. The issue of the need to renew the road surface was raised atpersonal reception of citizens, which the Governor of St. Petersburg Alexander Beglov held on November 29, 2024. Then the city leadership was addressed by the Associate Professor of the Higher School of Public Administration, Deputy Director of the Institute of Mechanics and Technology, Maxim Ivanov. On the instructions of the Governor, a large-scale set of measures was implemented to improve street infrastructure.

During the repair the following works were carried out:

More than 7,000 square meters of road surface and sidewalks were renewed; new thermoplastic markings were applied; speed bumps were installed to improve safety; curbstones were lowered to provide an accessible environment for people with limited mobility, elderly people, and parents with strollers.

The repairs were completed within the established timeframe and in compliance with the required quality standards.

The Governor of St. Petersburg noted that over 108 thousand people live within the boundaries of the Akademicheskoe municipal district, where Khlopina Street runs. The importance of the work carried out is also due to the fact that by the end of 2025, a major overhaul of Gzhatskaya Street, which intersects with Khlopina, will be completed. The new circuit will ensure movement around the microdistrict without exiting onto key highways – Grazhdansky Prospekt and Prospekt Nepokorennykh.

When we talk about the comfort and safety of the urban environment, it is important not only to develop initiatives in theory, but also to achieve their practical implementation. It is nice to see that our proposal was heard and implemented. This is an example of how science and government can work in the interests of society. Together – to a comfortable and safe St. Petersburg! Together we make the city better. Only forward! – said Maxim Ivanov.

The implementation of the project has become a vivid example of effective interaction between the government, the scientific community and citizens. Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, the Institute of Industrial Management, Economics and Trade and the Higher School of Public Administration continue to contribute to the development of the urban environment, and the student association "Public Administration Laboratory" demonstrates the practical significance of applied research in the field of state and municipal administration.

On Tuesday morning, local security forces, in collaboration with community security teams, cordoned off the area to calm the situation, the official added.
