BERLIN, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) — German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced on Friday that Germany will suspend all exports of military equipment that could be used in the Gaza Strip.

The decision came after the Israeli cabinet approved military operations aimed at occupying the Gaza Strip. Merz called on the Israeli government to “refrain from further steps to annex the West Bank.”

F. Merz also expressed deep concern about the humanitarian situation in Gaza, stressing that in the context of the ongoing offensive, Israel bears a greater responsibility than ever to meet the needs of the civilian population of the enclave. He called on Israel to ensure full access to the humanitarian sector, including from the UN and other non-governmental organizations.

“Following the positive steps taken in recent days, Israel must continue to improve the humanitarian situation in Gaza in a comprehensive and sustainable manner,” the German Chancellor said. –0–

BEIJING, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) — An event dedicated to intangible cultural heritage (ICH) exchanges between China and Russia was held in Manzhouli City, north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, on Friday.

As reported by the Internet portal Sohu.com with reference to the Committee for the Development of Tourism of the City of Manzhouli, the folk art group of the Trans-Baikal Territory of Russia opened the event by playing traditional instruments – the button accordion, balalaika and wooden spoons.

The ICH bearers and artists of Manzhouli City masterfully presented the intangible heritage objects – Daur folk songs /the Daur are one of the few national minorities living in China/ and morin khuur music /a Mongolian national musical instrument/, bringing the atmosphere of the event to a festive climax.

The virtuoso performance of the artists of the two countries sounded like a solemn symphony of the cultures of the NCN, giving the audience a musical celebration where traditions were intertwined with modernity.

The event also featured a fair of cultural heritage. Entering this space, guests felt as if they were in a living cultural museum: the production of red grain vinegar, Mongolian calligraphy, and traditional Chinese medicine techniques captivated Chinese and foreign tourists.

This event not only vividly demonstrated the rich ICH projects of the border regions of the two countries, but also became a successful practice of intercultural dialogue. It laid a new bridge for deepening exchanges and cooperation between China and Russia in the field of intangible cultural heritage, adding a bright touch to the summer cultural life of citizens and tourists. -0-

China strongly protests Philippines over its leader's remarks on Taiwan issue

BEIJING, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) — China's Foreign Ministry and the Chinese Embassy in the Philippines have expressed strong protest to the Philippine side over the statements made by the country's leader on the Taiwan issue, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said on Friday.

During his visit to India, the Philippine leader reportedly said in an interview that if there is a standoff between China and the US over the Taiwan issue, the Philippines cannot stay away due to its geographical location. If a full-scale war breaks out (in the Taiwan Strait), the Philippines will inevitably be involved.

The Philippine leader also said that there are a large number of Filipinos living on the island of Taiwan. If a conflict breaks out, the Philippines will have to intervene to get its citizens back.

The official representative of the Chinese Foreign Ministry stated that there is only one China in the world, and Taiwan is an integral part of it. The Taiwan issue is an internal matter of China and lies at the heart of its fundamental interests. How to resolve this issue is the business of the Chinese themselves, which does not tolerate interference.

The Philippine government has made serious commitments to China, including adhering to the one-China policy, recognizing that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory, and understanding the Chinese government's efforts to realize the country's reunification. In addition, the Philippine president has also made it clear that "the Philippines is committed to the one-China policy. The Taiwan issue is purely China's internal affair to be resolved by the Chinese people," the spokesperson said, noting that these words are written in black and white, but the Philippines is now going back on its words without considering the serious consequences.

"They continue to make incorrect and provocative statements and actions, continue to evade and undermine the one-China principle, and continue to damage China-Philippines relations. China firmly opposes this," the spokesman added.

The spokesperson further stressed that “geographical proximity” and “the large number of Filipinos in Taiwan” should not be used as pretexts to interfere in the internal and sovereign affairs of other countries, adding that these claims not only contravene international law and the ASEAN Charter, but also harm regional peace and stability as well as the fundamental interests of the Filipino people.

"We urge the Philippines to earnestly abide by the one-China principle and the spirit of the China-Philippines joint communique on the establishment of diplomatic relations, and refrain from playing with fire on issues involving China's core interests," the foreign ministry spokesman said. -0-
