A panel with a portrait of Hermann Hesse has been restored on Savvinskaya Embankment.

An important disclaimer is at the bottom of this article.

Restoration work on the panel with Hermann Hesse's portrait, located on Savvinskaya Embankment (building 27), has been completed in Moscow. The work was created using a unique technique of carving the image into layers of plaster. It will once again be accessible to the public in 2026, according to Moscow's Chief Architect. Sergey Kuznetsov.

"Attitudes toward street art have changed dramatically; people have learned to value and preserve it. Initially, the work featuring Hermann Hesse's portrait was considered illegal, but it became so popular with locals that it was decided to preserve and restore it. To preserve the mural, a project was developed to relocate the wall fragment, restore it, protect it from the elements, and install architectural lighting. The dismantling and relocation of the fragment was carried out with the utmost care," noted Sergey Kuznetsov.

The work of Portuguese artist Alexandre Farto, better known as Vhils, appeared on the façade of the Moscow Silk Factory dormitory in 2008. Now it will be integrated into the infrastructure of the new residential complex.

Before restoration, the mural was in a state of disrepair: the paint had faded, and the plaster was peeling and infected with fungus. Upon inspection, specialists discovered that up to 60 percent of the surface had become weakened and required replacement. Georgy Myasnikov and Mikhail Pilyugin, members of the Union of Artists of Russia, were brought in to carry out restoration work using restoration techniques.

The work began with removing damaged areas and strengthening the remaining surface. The wall was treated with a hydrophobic impregnation to protect against moisture, and a primer was applied to ensure adhesion. Next, specialists mixed mortar and pigments by hand to accurately reproduce the original texture and color of the coating. The plaster was applied layer by layer, and the carvings were made in the wet and drying mortar, allowing the artist to closely approximate the artist's original technique. Simple tools were used for the work: knives, spatulas, and wooden trowels.

According to experts, the primary goal was to preserve the authenticity of the work. The work restored the texture and clarity of the panel's lines. The piece is considered to be in stable condition: without further intervention, it can now last at least five years, and with proper care, up to half a century.

Today, the mural is recognized as a significant part of Moscow's cultural landscape and one of the early iconic works by Vhils, whose projects have been exhibited internationally. In 2012, it was included in the program of the capital's "Best City on Earth" festival. Muscovites will be able to admire the renovated portrait of Hermann Hesse on Savvinskaya Embankment later this summer, once the project is completed.

A professional retraining program for employees of the Procurement Directorate of JSC Power Machines was successfully completed at SPbPU. The program was implemented by the Institute of Industrial Management, Economics, and Trade and the Institute of Mechanical Engineering, Materials, and Transport. The Graduate School of Industrial Management acted as the project manager.

The program has started Last March, 25 students—purchasing managers from the Leningrad Metal Plant and Elektrosila plants—studied the fundamentals of production organization and economics in metallurgy for purchasing management at mechanical engineering enterprises.

The training included lectures and practical classes both at the Polytechnic University and at the Leningrad Metal Plant and Electrosila enterprises.

The Higher School of Materials Physics and Technology at IMMiT provides training in the technological processes of producing ferrous and non-ferrous metals and metallurgical products, the fundamentals of materials science, modern technologies and metalworking, and managing the metallurgical quality of finished products.

Conducting such programs requires adapting the material presented to address applied problems in mechanical engineering, metallurgy, and related technologies, which immerses students in the challenges of these fields. The dialogue established with Power Machines employees during the classes is important and promising for future collaboration, says Sergei Ganin, Director of the Higher School of Materials Physics and Engineering.

The IPMEIT Higher School of Industrial Management offered modules on economics and management at a mechanical engineering company. During the classes, students explored the economics of metal product procurement, identifying problems and finding levers to improve procurement efficiency, and managing metal product deliveries to a mechanical engineering company.

A key feature of the retraining program, created at the request of the qualified client "Power Machines," is the integration of economic, managerial, and engineering knowledge. Students not only master economics and management issues as they relate to mechanical engineering but also study the production technology of ferrous and non-ferrous metals. "The result is a specialist capable of competently solving complex organizational, economic, and technological problems in procurement for a mechanical engineering company," says Olga Kalinina, Director of the Higher School of Industrial Management.

In addition to the main educational process, the students were given a tour of the Polytechnic University's Museum of Mineralogy and Geology.

A key element of the program included excursions organized by the Polytechnic University to St. Petersburg machine-building plants with similar production processes. Participants visited the Spetsstal plant, the St. Petersburg Tractor Plant, and the Obukhov Plant, where they learned about the specifics of metallurgical production management.

The final certification for the program took place on the IPMEiT campus. The university's faculty members who deliver the program represented the committee.

The presentation of professional retraining diplomas took place at the annual meeting of the Procurement Directorate of Power Machines' subordinate divisions in the assembly hall of the Electrosila plant. Dmitry Tikhonov, Vice-Rector for Continuing and Pre-University Education at SPbPU, opened the ceremony: "The creation of such educational products is part of the university's development program. Firstly, it demonstrates the relevance of the knowledge imparted through work with the real sector of the economy, and secondly, through the interaction of higher education institutions from various institutes, it demonstrates our key competitive advantage—our polytechnical approach."

Evgeniya Khmel, Chairperson of the final certification committee on behalf of the qualified customer and Director of Development of General Industrial Suppliers at Power Machines, summed up the results of the training: Our cooperation with the Polytechnic University fromworking with students This has evolved into the creation of new specialized programs for the company's employees. Initial results have been achieved, including successful completion of the program and the receipt of professional retraining diplomas. Many challenges lie ahead, which will lead to even more ambitious results. The knowledge gained during training by Power Machines employees will be applied in practice and yield real economic benefits.

HEFEI, February 19 (Xinhua) — In the picturesque bamboo thickets of southern Anhui Province, eastern China, a spring breeze gently caresses cheeks. Here, amidst the magnificent scenery, Alexandra Timofeeva (Sasha) from Russia has found a home and a quiet happiness, along with her family and beloved horses.

Sasha has a deep connection with China. After studying in Shanghai, she traveled to Europe to hone her equestrian skills. There, fate brought her together with Vasily Ivanov (Vasil), a show jumping trainer from Belarus. Their love blossomed, they married, and became parents to a wonderful daughter, Maya. In 2023, Vasil was invited to teach at the Yangtze River Delta International Equestrian Center in Dongting, Anhui Province. Alexandra's family decided to move to this cozy Chinese town to begin a new chapter in their lives.

Upon arrival in Dongting, Sasha's family was greeted with generous gifts by the locals. This warm welcome instantly dispelled the weariness of the journey and brought them closer to the place through the genuine kindness and hospitality of the villagers.

"Horseback riding has always been my favorite pastime," Sasha shared, still remembering the feeling of overcoming her first obstacle. "That moment was truly magical." Now, living near the equestrian center, she trains daily in show jumping, takes her beloved horse on leisurely walks, and sometimes assists and supports the horses' training sessions at the center.

At the racetrack, Sasha overcomes barriers with full dedication, pouring all her energy into every movement. In her daily life, she actively participates in traditional folk events, immersing herself in the local customs of Guangde, and even mastering culinary secrets, such as how to cook braised pork with radish.

Meanwhile, their daughter Maya is growing happily, attending the local kindergarten, learning Chinese and playing with local peers. Her husband, Vasily, is successfully pursuing a career as a horseback riding instructor and is highly respected by his students. All these factors help Sasha feel at home in this once unfamiliar land.

As a professional rider, Sasha has also witnessed the remarkable growth of equestrian sports in China. Even in remote corners like their current home, high-tech facilities capable of hosting international competitions exist, attracting more and more amateur and professional equestrians to train each year.

With the arrival of the Year of the Horse, Sasha harbors a simple yet sincere wish. "I hope to participate in more equestrian competitions this year and also spend more time with my family," she said, adding that her parents are planning to visit China soon. She looks forward to showing them the picturesque landscapes and introducing them to the rich cultural heritage of southern Anhui Province.

The daily life of this international family of three not only illustrates the authentic experience of foreigners settling in rural China and gradually integrating into the local community, but also reflects the unique warmth of human relationships and natural beauty inherent in this region. It offers a glimpse into the diverse possibilities of life in modern Chinese villages.
