BEIJING, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) — China Southern Airlines announced it will resume passenger flights on the route between Urumqi in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and Osh in Kyrgyzstan from October 9, the Xinjiang Daily newspaper reported.

Flights on the Urumqi-Osh-Urumqi route will operate three times a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. A one-way flight takes approximately two and a half hours.

Once these passenger flights resume, this route will become the only direct air route from Osh to China. This will increase the number of Kyrgyz cities with direct air links to China to two – Bishkek and Osh – further enhancing the convenience of trade, economic activity, and people-to-people exchanges between the two countries.

China Southern Airlines reported that in recent years, it has made active efforts to ensure uninterrupted air service between China and Kyrgyzstan. Since October of last year, Urumqi-Bishkek-Urumqi flights have served 49,000 passengers. The resumption of Urumqi-Osh-Urumqi flights is expected to further boost demand for cross-border travel between China and Kyrgyzstan.

Harbin, September 17 (Xinhua) — The world premiere of the film "731" (Evil Unbound) about Unit 731 took place on Wednesday in Harbin, northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, where a Japanese army unit was based for committing grave atrocities against humanity. The film depicts the crimes committed by the Japanese invaders in China.

The film "731" tells the story of Wang Yongzhang, a local merchant, and others forcibly imprisoned in the "special prison" of Unit 731, where they were lured with false promises of freedom in exchange for cooperation in supposed medical examinations and disease prevention research, but became victims of horrific medical experiments, including frostbite tests, gas exposure, and vivisection.

The base of Unit 731, a secret Japanese army unit engaged in the research and development of biological and chemical weapons, was established in the Pingfang area of Harbin and served as the main center of Japanese germ warfare in China and Southeast Asia during World War II. -0-

KABUL, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) — At least three people were killed and two others injured when their car skidded off the road and fell into a deep ravine in Afghanistan's northern Badakhshan province, provincial police spokesman Ehsanullah Kamgar said on Wednesday.

The crash occurred in Argo County after a car lost control on a steep hill, killing three passengers, including the driver, and injuring two children, he said.

This is the third such incident in the northern provinces in the past three days. On Monday, a collision between two motorcycles in Badakhshan left one person dead and three others injured.

Earlier on Sunday, six passengers were killed and four others injured in a head-on collision between a car and a truck in the northern province of Faryab.

Road traffic fatalities remain a persistent problem in Afghanistan, often attributed to deteriorating road conditions, reckless driving, and inadequate safety measures in challenging terrain and limited infrastructure. –0–

BEIJING, September 17 (Xinhua) — The total number of bicycles in China has exceeded 200 million units, including 380 million electric bicycles, the China Bicycle Association reported on Wednesday.

Bicycles and e-bikes account for approximately 30 out of every 100 trips made daily by residents of Chinese cities and towns, according to data from an industry organization.

The growing popularity of bicycles and e-bikes is driven by their flexibility and efficiency as a means of transport, as well as increased environmental awareness, with more and more people choosing two-wheeled transport as a low-carbon alternative to cars.

According to the aforementioned association, two-wheeled travel reduces carbon emissions in China by approximately 10,000 tons per day, which equates to a saving of 6.6 million liters of gasoline at a rate of 8 liters per 100 km. -0-

HEFEI, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) — The 2025 World Manufacturing Conference, which will showcase advanced manufacturing technologies, will be held from Sept. 20 to 23 in Hefei, capital of east China's Anhui Province, organizers said.

The four-day event will bring together representatives from more than 40 countries and regions, including government officials, business representatives, and senior officials from international organizations and trade associations. Foreign guests are expected to account for more than half of all participants.

For the first time, the conference will feature an intelligent robotics exhibition. Robots will be demonstrated in simulated public and domestic settings, such as stores, senior care centers, and maintenance centers, to showcase their potential applications in everyday life, according to conference organizers.

Anhui, a former agricultural province and the country's raw materials base, has emerged as a hub for emerging industries. In the first half of this year, Anhui Province ranked first in the country in automobile production, new energy vehicle (NEV) production, and vehicle exports.

According to Chang Yejun, deputy secretary-general of the provincial government, the province currently produces about 10 percent of the world's displays, 8 percent of industrial robots, 11 percent of non-electric vehicles, and half of the country's photovoltaic glass.

New energy vehicles, produced by the province's robust industrial base, are expected to be a highlight of the conference. Companies such as JAC Motors, Huawei, and Chery will showcase new models of intelligent, connected new energy vehicles, as well as automotive-grade chips, intelligent driving systems, and quantum-proof communication technologies.

The event will also showcase cutting-edge technologies of future industries, including a model of the experimental superconducting tokamak (BEST), a compact nuclear fusion experimental device currently under construction in Hefei, and the Origin Wukong quantum computer, which has so far completed more than 690,000 quantum computing tasks for users in 163 countries and regions, with over 34 million visits worldwide. -0-

Beijing, September 17 (Xinhua) — The first China-Russia symposium on sorghum cooperation was held in Harbin, Heilongjiang Province, northeast China. The event focused on such topical issues as modern molecular breeding, innovation in germplasm resources, and industry cooperation between the two countries.

According to information on the website of the Heilongjiang Provincial Academy of Agricultural Sciences, the symposium was organized by the Institute of Plant Resources of the Heilongjiang Provincial Academy of Agricultural Sciences jointly with the Russian Research and Design Institute of Sorghum and Corn, and the Heilongjiang Provincial Key Laboratory of Genetic Improvement of Legumes.

Jia Guanqing, chief scientist of the China National Millet and Sorghum Industrial Technology System, emphasized in his speech that this event is a concrete implementation of the consensus on agricultural cooperation reached by the two countries' leaders and will provide technological support for the protection and utilization of black soils. China's breakthrough in stress-resistant sorghum breeding and Russian large-scale cultivation technologies complement each other perfectly. Joint research and development will not only combine the drought- and frost-resistant characteristics of Chinese varieties with Russian precision farming techniques but also create a standardized production system to jointly address the production challenges posed by climate change.

During thematic presentations, sorghum research experts from the two countries delivered presentations on the development of the sorghum industry in China and Russia, modern molecular sorghum breeding research, scientific, technological, and trade cooperation between the countries, and the potential for grain sorghum applications. Participants actively discussed these topics.

Symposium participants also visited the experimental sorghum breeding base at the National Modern Agriculture Demonstration Zone of the Heilongjiang Provincial Academy of Agricultural Sciences, where the Chinese team presented in detail the outstanding achievements of the sorghum breeding team in developing varieties for brewing, broom making, food, and forage production in recent years. Chinese and Russian researchers conducted an in-depth exchange of technologies and field experience.

Russian experts expressed their willingness to share stress-resistant breeding technologies with China and to jointly develop the resources of solonetz-salt-marsh lands in the Far East.

The event promoted cooperation between sorghum-related research institutions and enterprises, laid a solid foundation for the joint breeding of new sorghum varieties, the utilization of sorghum-specific genetic resources, basic theoretical research, the development of cooperation in the sorghum industry and trade, and further strengthened the international influence of the Heilongjiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences in relevant fields. -0-
