UN, September 17 /Xinhua/ — Nearly 48,000 Palestinians have fled south over the past two days due to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) ground offensive on Gaza City, UN humanitarian agencies reported on Tuesday.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) noted that from mid-August to Monday, its partners recorded more than 190,000 such displacements. Many were forced to walk due to the extremely high cost of transport.

“Partners report that displaced families, often headed by women and older people, are walking for up to nine hours in extreme heat, often barefoot and carrying injured children,” OCHA said in a statement. “Many arrive without shelter, and requests from the most vulnerable for family tents continue to grow.”

OCHA said its partners assisting the displaced reported that more than 1,500 people, including over 900 children, received emergency assistance, including psychological support, water and medical care.

The department noted that healthcare partners are reporting colossal strain on hospitals and clinics. This week, Al-Quds Hospital in Gaza City was damaged by nearby bombings and is now housing displaced families. Only three of the six medical facilities run by the UN relief agency for Palestinian refugees are functioning in Gaza City.

The Zikim crossing point has been closed for four days. Missions to deliver fuel and medical supplies have been cancelled due to security concerns, overcrowding, and looting. Humanitarian convoys continue to face delays and road hazards, preventing the delivery of aid to civilians most in need.

“Despite these enormous challenges and reduced supplies, the UN and its humanitarian partners continue to provide life-saving assistance and critical services where and when possible throughout the Gaza Strip,” OCHA said. –0–

SAO PAULO, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) — The Federal District Court in the southern Brazilian city of Porto Alegre on Tuesday ordered former President Jair Bolsonaro to pay 1 million reais (about 188,000 U.S. dollars) in damages for racist remarks he made while in office and to issue a public apology.

HONG KONG, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) — Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) Chief Executive Lee Jiachao announced plans to accelerate the development of new growth areas to strengthen Hong Kong's status as an international financial hub, including the establishment of an international gold trading market.

Delivering his fourth policy speech on Wednesday, Li Jiachao said the HKSAR will support the Hong Kong Airport Authority and financial institutions in expanding gold storage capacity in the HKSAR, with a planned gold storage capacity of over 2,000 tonnes within three years, turning Hong Kong into a regional gold reserve hub.
