ISLAMABAD, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) — At least nine security personnel were killed and eight others wounded in an improvised explosive device (IED) blast on Monday in Pakistan's northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, security officials said.

The incident occurred after a security convoy was hit by an IED in Mulla Khan Sarai area of South Waziristan agency of the province, security officials said on Monday.

Police, security forces and rescue teams arrived at the scene immediately after the explosion and took the wounded to a hospital located in the area.

Police cordoned off the area and launched a search operation in the surrounding area to arrest the perpetrators.

BEIJING, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) — Cargo turnover through five checkpoints located in the southern part of Northwest China's Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region increased by 63.3 percent year-on-year in the first eight months of this year, the Xinjiang Daily newspaper reported, citing Kashgar Customs.

These border crossings include Irkeshtam and Torugart on the Chinese-Kyrgyz border, Karasu on the border with Tajikistan, Khunjerab on the border with Pakistan, and the Kashgar air crossing.

In particular, the volume of cargo traffic through Irkeshtam increased by 67.4 percent year-on-year during the reporting period, driven by the 24/7 customs clearance system (24 hours a day, 7 days a week), which was launched on a trial basis in June of this year. It is the first border crossing in southern Xinjiang to operate 24 hours a day.

The Torugart border crossing point saw a significant increase in incoming and outgoing passenger traffic: in the first eight months of this year, the number of border crossings through it totaled nearly 20,000 people, a 339 percent increase from the previous year. This was primarily due to an increase in outgoing and incoming workers participating in the construction of the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway.

During the same period, 98 percent more commercial vehicles were exported through the Karasu checkpoint, amounting to 14,600 units.

BEIJING, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) — After passing customs inspection on Monday, 160 tons of tangerines were shipped from Changde, Hunan Province, to Belarus using cold-chain containers.

The batch of mandarins in question was harvested in Shimen County. The framework agreement signing ceremony took place on Monday in Changsha, the capital of Hunan Province, central China. BEIJING, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) — China's manufacturing purchasing managers' index (PMI) stood at 49.8 in September, up 0.4 percentage points from August, data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) showed Tuesday.

Let us remember that a PMI index above 50 indicates expansion of the manufacturing sector, while one below 50 indicates contraction.

"Data show that manufacturing activity accelerated in September and the overall business climate continued to improve," said NBS Chief Statistician Ho Lihui.

The production sub-index was 51.9, which is 1.1 percentage points higher than the August figure and is the highest value in almost a six-month period.

In addition, the new orders sub-index was 49.7, up from the previous month's figure of 49.5.

Some key sectors maintained their growth momentum, with the PMI readings for equipment manufacturing and high-tech manufacturing coming in at 51.9 and 51.6, respectively.

The data also showed a more positive market outlook, with the production and business expectations sub-index reaching 54.1, up from 53.7 in August.

BEIJING, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) — China's economic and trade ties with northern European countries are developing at a steady pace, as evidenced by stable trade growth, active bilateral investment, and promising cooperation in green sectors, the Ministry of Commerce said Monday.

According to the agency, China's foreign trade turnover with five Northern European countries: Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Iceland, amounted to approximately $38 billion from January to August of this year, up 7.1 percent year-on-year.

The main export items from Northern European countries to China were pharmaceuticals and precision equipment, while the share of Chinese exports of high-value-added products, such as electrical equipment and vehicles, grew steadily, the ministry noted.

Companies from Northern European countries continue to increase their investments in China. Thus, the combined FDI in China from the five aforementioned countries has exceeded USD 15 billion.

MEXICO CITY, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) — Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said Monday she hopes the United States will reconsider its decision to impose new tariffs on heavy vehicle imports.

Beirut, September 30 (Xinhua) — Two people were killed and another was injured on Monday in Israeli airstrikes in southern and eastern Lebanon, according to Lebanon's National News Agency (NNA) and security sources.

An Israeli drone fired a missile at a water tanker heading to the city of Nabatieh, killing one person, NNA reported.

Another drone strike hit the Shams area in Lebanon's Bekaa region, destroying an excavator and killing its driver.

One person was injured in a separate airstrike on the village of Aytarun in southern Lebanon. Israel did not immediately comment on the incident.

A ceasefire agreement brokered by the United States and France between the Hezbollah armed group and Israel has been in effect since November 27, 2024. It put an end to the clashes that erupted between the two sides after the war in the Gaza Strip began.
