BEIJING, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) — Cargo turnover through five checkpoints located in the southern part of Northwest China's Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region increased by 63.3 percent year-on-year in the first eight months of this year, the Xinjiang Daily newspaper reported, citing Kashgar Customs.

These border crossings include Irkeshtam and Torugart on the Chinese-Kyrgyz border, Karasu on the border with Tajikistan, Khunjerab on the border with Pakistan, and the Kashgar air crossing.

In particular, the volume of cargo traffic through Irkeshtam increased by 67.4 percent year-on-year during the reporting period, driven by the 24/7 customs clearance system (24 hours a day, 7 days a week), which was launched on a trial basis in June of this year. It is the first border crossing in southern Xinjiang to operate 24 hours a day.

The Torugart border crossing point saw a significant increase in incoming and outgoing passenger traffic: in the first eight months of this year, the number of border crossings through it totaled nearly 20,000 people, a 339 percent increase from the previous year. This was primarily due to an increase in outgoing and incoming workers participating in the construction of the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway.

During the same period, 98 percent more commercial vehicles were exported through the Karasu checkpoint, amounting to 14,600 units.

Moreover, in January-August, the volume of cargo transportation through the Khunjerab checkpoint, which began year-round operation at the end of 2024, increased by 93 percent compared to the same period last year.

At the Kashgar air crossing, where additional cargo and passenger routes to Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, and other countries were opened this year, an air service network has been established covering Central and South Asia. In the first eight months of this year, inbound and outbound tourist traffic through this airport increased by 47 percent year-on-year.

In order to further simplify customs procedures, various departments of the Kashgar Prefecture government, including the administration of the Economic and Technological Development Zone and the Comprehensive Bonded Zone, have undertaken coordination efforts with customs services, making good use of the functions of the five border crossings as logistics hubs.

BEIJING, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) — After passing customs inspection on Monday, 160 tons of tangerines were shipped from Changde, Hunan Province, to Belarus using cold-chain containers.

Thus, this type of fruit has been delivered from Hunan Province to Belarus for the first time, writes the daily newspaper Hunan Ribao.

The batch of mandarins in question was harvested in Shimen County. According to Xiangjia Juyou, a local company specializing in mandarins, it is equipped with an intelligent sorting system to ensure the quality of its export goods. This system is capable of classifying the fruit by such parameters as size, weight, skin color, and sugar content.

“We are expected to supply around 10,000 tons of tangerines to the international market this year,” said Chen Lingjiao, a representative of the company.

Shimen County's mandarin orange export volume is expected to exceed 40,000 tons this year. According to data, Hunan mandarins have previously been exported to many countries and regions worldwide, including Russia, the UAE, Canada, and Southeast Asia.

BEIJING, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) — China's manufacturing purchasing managers' index (PMI) stood at 49.8 in September, up 0.4 percentage points from August, data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) showed Tuesday.

Let us remember that a PMI index above 50 indicates expansion of the manufacturing sector, while one below 50 indicates contraction.

"Data show that manufacturing activity accelerated in September and the overall business climate continued to improve," said NBS Chief Statistician Ho Lihui.

The production sub-index was 51.9, which is 1.1 percentage points higher than the August figure and is the highest value in almost a six-month period.

In addition, the new orders sub-index was 49.7, up from the previous month's figure of 49.5.

Some key sectors maintained their growth momentum, with the PMI readings for equipment manufacturing and high-tech manufacturing coming in at 51.9 and 51.6, respectively.

The data also showed a more positive market outlook, with the production and business expectations sub-index reaching 54.1, up from 53.7 in August.

“This is the third consecutive month of growth in the expectations sub-index, indicating that manufacturing enterprises are optimistic about market development,” said Ho Lihui. -0-

BEIJING, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) — China's economic and trade ties with northern European countries are developing at a steady pace, as evidenced by stable trade growth, active bilateral investment, and promising cooperation in green sectors, the Ministry of Commerce said Monday.

According to the agency, China's foreign trade turnover with five Northern European countries: Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Iceland, amounted to approximately $38 billion from January to August of this year, up 7.1 percent year-on-year.

The main export items from Northern European countries to China were pharmaceuticals and precision equipment, while the share of Chinese exports of high-value-added products, such as electrical equipment and vehicles, grew steadily, the ministry noted.

Companies from Northern European countries continue to increase their investments in China. Thus, the combined FDI in China from the five aforementioned countries has exceeded USD 15 billion.

Electric vehicles and batteries are emerging as new areas of cooperation, according to Wang Yupeng, a spokesman for China's Ministry of Commerce.

“Northern European countries have become a key market for Chinese electric vehicle and battery companies to enter Europe, as well as for accelerating cooperation in production and supply chains,” he concluded. -0-

MEXICO CITY, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) — Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said Monday she hopes the United States will reconsider its decision to impose new tariffs on heavy vehicle imports.

"We are already in talks, hoping that the Mexico issue will be reconsidered," K. Sheinbaum said during her daily press conference, adding that tariffs could be problematic for both countries.

US President Donald Trump on Thursday announced a series of new tariffs, including a 25 percent tariff on imported heavy vehicles from October 1, as part of his policy of strengthening domestic industry.

K. Sheinbaum noted that under the US-Mexico-Canada Free Trade Agreement, Mexico's exports have grown in tariff-free sectors, particularly in sectors that do not include finished automobiles, steel, or copper, thanks to the agreement's "zero tariff" scheme.

“Trade ties with the United States remain important and a significant competitive advantage for Mexico,” the president said. –0–

Beirut, September 30 (Xinhua) — Two people were killed and another was injured on Monday in Israeli airstrikes in southern and eastern Lebanon, according to Lebanon's National News Agency (NNA) and security sources.

An Israeli drone fired a missile at a water tanker heading to the city of Nabatieh, killing one person, NNA reported.

Another drone strike hit the Shams area in Lebanon's Bekaa region, destroying an excavator and killing its driver.

One person was injured in a separate airstrike on the village of Aytarun in southern Lebanon. Israel did not immediately comment on the incident.

A ceasefire agreement brokered by the United States and France between the Hezbollah armed group and Israel has been in effect since November 27, 2024. It put an end to the clashes that erupted between the two sides after the war in the Gaza Strip began.

Despite the agreement, the Israeli army has carried out sporadic strikes on Lebanon, claiming they are aimed at eliminating "threats" from Hezbollah and maintaining its forces in five key positions along the Lebanese border.
