Moscow, October 1 (Xinhua) — The "Fabric of Fate" exhibition, dedicated to the decorative and applied arts traditions of China and Russia, opened on Tuesday at the Mosfilm Gallery in Moscow. The exhibition features works by three Russian female decorative artists, including Honored Artist of the Russian Federation and Chinese cultural specialist Irina Zakharova, mother of Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova.

At the opening ceremony, Zhang Wei, Chargé d'Affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Russia, noted that relations between China and Russia, which are developing at a very high level, are contributing to the rapprochement of the peoples of the two countries, and that Chinese culture arouses keen interest and love among Russians.

"This exhibition attracts art connoisseurs and lovers from China and Russia with its unique style, profound content, and meaning. I see and feel that each painting on display is created with soul and love for life, for humanity, for the Fatherland. It's amazing. We can only admire it," the diplomat said, thanking the artists for their outstanding contribution to strengthening the traditional friendship and mutual understanding between the peoples of the two countries and for their contribution to the development of cultural exchanges.

The exhibition's central theme is fabric. Fabrics, one of humanity's most ancient inventions, have become an integral part of culture and everyday life. Unique patterns and designs reflect the history and traditions of both peoples. Patchwork, for example, demonstrates the careful attention to fabric. This form of handicraft is found in many cultures, including Chinese and Russian.

"Fabric is a very serious matter. Fabric is not just a material; it's the history of the economy—the Great Silk Road. It's a unification of cultures," noted I. Zakharova. In her works presented at the exhibition, she emphasized vibrant, multicolored bouquets, as well as images that unite the folk art of Russia and China. One panel depicts a fish, a symbol of wealth and abundance in Chinese culture.

The exhibition features textile appliqués, paintings on fabric, unusual installations, and "fabric frescoes." I. Zakharova emphasized that the artists work in different styles and employ different techniques, but all of their works share common elements. "All of the works are filled with immense warmth, a sense of their homeland, their art, their nature, their patterns, their chintz, their paintings," she explained.

Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakharova believes that all the works on display reflect traditional values. She stated that these values are essential for every person. "They enable us to develop, move forward, and reach new levels of spiritual, emotional, and intellectual development," the diplomat emphasized, adding that these values enable us to survive in difficult times.

M. Zakharova also noted that she is proud of her mother, since she has proven herself not only as an art historian and researcher, but also as a talented creator. –0–

Moscow, October 1 (Xinhua) – The development of the Arctic and the Northern Sea Route (NSR) have become one of Russia's strategic development priorities, and Russia is counting on cooperation with its Chinese partners to facilitate the development of the Arctic region. This was announced by Murmansk Region Governor Andrei Chibis.

"This route from Asia to the West is 40 percent shorter than through the Suez Canal. Moreover, it's safer in many ways. And, of course, the Russian Federation's goal, as set by the president for the government, companies, and regions, is to make the NSR competitive," Chibis said in an exclusive interview with Xinhua.

He reported that Russia has currently developed detailed plans for the development of the Arctic region and the NSR, including the construction of new icebreakers, improved emergency protection along the route, increased satellite navigation services, and improvements to port facilities and the rail transport network along the NSR.

"This will undoubtedly allow us to make even more active use of the Northern Sea Route and make it a truly comfortable and profitable transport corridor for both our country and our partners," the governor noted.

According to him, Russia expects to expand cooperation with its Chinese partners in the Arctic, primarily in matters of logistics, mineral development, and energy development along the NSR.

The Murmansk deep-water ice-free port is one of the largest ports in the Russian Arctic, with an annual throughput of over 56 million tons, said A. Chibis. This accounts for more than half of the cargo turnover of all Russian Arctic ports. With the development of the NSR, the Murmansk port will play a more important role in Russian-Chinese economic and trade cooperation, the governor is confident.

As A. Chibis noted, the Murmansk Region maintains good cooperative relations and intensive cultural exchanges with regions of China. In recent years, an increasing number of Chinese tourists have been coming to the Murmansk Region to admire the Northern Lights. "We are constantly improving roads and building hotels, and we look forward to welcoming more Chinese tourists," the regional governor emphasized.

He added that trade and economic cooperation between the Murmansk Region and China is also developing steadily. Many of the region's largest companies currently rely primarily on Chinese-made equipment and value it highly.

“Therefore, in my opinion, there is a huge range of cooperation with our Chinese friends – from the emotional cultural sphere to, of course, deep processing, including mineral resources extracted in the Arctic, and the development of logistics, as is happening now,” A. Chibis summarized. –0–

KUNMING, October 1 (Xinhua) — Law enforcement agencies from China, Laos, Myanmar, and Thailand concluded the 157th joint patrol of the Mekong River on Tuesday, according to the Public Security Department of Yunnan Province in southwest China.

More than 100 law enforcement officers from four countries and seven patrol vessels took part in the joint patrol.

The mission aimed to ensure the security of waterways and combat cross-border crimes such as online gambling, telecommunications fraud, drug production and trafficking.

During the patrol, law enforcement agencies from the four countries held an information-sharing meeting in Muang Mo, Laos, to analyze the security situation in the Lancang-Mekong River basin. They also conducted joint training exercises at key sections of the river, focusing on practical aspects such as coordinated command and emergency response.

In addition, three Lao patrol vessels arrived in Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province, for a planned friendly visit to the local water patrol unit.

The Mekong River, known as the Lancang River in China, is one of the most important waterways for cross-border navigation in Southeast Asia. Joint river patrols involving China, Laos, Myanmar, and Thailand have been conducted since December 2011. –0–

Kinshasa, October 1 (Xinhua) — A military court in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on Tuesday sentenced former President Joseph Kabila to death in absentia.

The former president of the DRC was found guilty of numerous crimes, including participation in the rebel movement, premeditated murder, torture, rape and the violent occupation of the city of Goma (the capital of North Kivu province), which is currently controlled by the rebel group Movement of March 23 (M23).

J. Kabila was also sentenced to 15 years in prison for his role in the conspiracy. For the remaining charges, the court imposed the death penalty.

The trial, which took place in absentia, began in July after the DRC Senate lifted the former president's parliamentary immunity in May.

J. Kabila, who was in power from 2001 to 2019, has lived in South Africa most of the time since 2023.

Since May, he has made several public statements in North Kivu province in eastern DRC. He also expressed a desire to return to his homeland to "contribute to finding a solution" to the ongoing crisis.

This was stated by President Mohamed Mu'izzu on Tuesday at a reception to mark the 76th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China (PRC) and the Mid-Autumn Festival, organized by the Chinese Embassy in the Maldives.

The President noted that China is one of the most dynamic and influential countries in the world, which has achieved significant success in reducing poverty and developing science, technology, and infrastructure.

"For the Maldives, China has never been just a distant friend. Our ties are rooted not only in agreements and exchanges, but also in memories, shared journeys, and the trust that comes with true friendship," added M. Muizzu.

The President praised China's commitment to multilateralism, its efforts to protect the rights of developing countries, and its desire to build a world based on mutual benefit between countries large and small.

"May the friendship between the Maldives and China remain as constant as the ocean that unites us and as enduring as the stars that guide us," said M. China concerned about prospects of anti-gang force in Haiti

UN, October 1 (Xinhua) — China remains seriously concerned about the prospects of establishing the UN Security Council-mandated Anti-Gang Force (GSF) in Haiti, China's Permanent Representative to the UN, Fu Cong, said on Tuesday.

The UN Security Council on Tuesday approved a resolution transforming the Kenya-led Multinational Security Mission in Haiti (MSS) into a Global Security Support Mission (GSF). China, Pakistan, and Russia abstained from voting.

Explaining the reasons for the vote, Fu Cong noted that China did not obstruct the adoption of the document, given the grave security situation in Haiti, as well as the concerns and appeals of the international community, especially from the UN Secretary-General and countries in the region.

According to the Permanent Representative, this is the greatest possible goodwill China could demonstrate. "At the same time, it should be noted that our questions and concerns remain. We are deeply concerned about the functioning and prospects of the GSF. We hope that the UN Security Council will closely monitor and strictly oversee this mission so that it can take timely and appropriate action based on actual developments," Fu Cong stated.

He noted that the draft presented by the United States and Panama contains ambiguous wording on key issues, and the document is not the result of comprehensive consultations between Security Council members.

Given the enormous disagreements within the UN Security Council, China and Russia proposed a technical extension of the MSS mandate to allow more time for thorough discussion and consensus building. Unfortunately, the co-sponsors of the draft insisted on putting this highly controversial document to a vote. This not only undermines the Security Council's solidarity and cooperation on the Haiti issue but also damages its credibility, Fu Cong stated.

He warned that this resolution risks worsening the already complex and dire situation in Haiti. According to him, the root cause of Haiti's multifaceted crisis is the absence of a legitimate government and a vacuum in public administration, which has created fertile ground for violent crime.

China is ready to continue constructive cooperation with the international community to help Haiti emerge from the crisis as soon as possible, Fu Cong concluded. –0–
