Moscow, October 9 (Xinhua) — Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke in detail about the causes and circumstances of the crash of the Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) plane in December 2024 at a meeting with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on Thursday.

The Russian leader recalled that he apologized to I. Aliyev for the tragedy that occurred in the skies over Russia and expressed his deepest condolences to the families of the victims.

According to Vladimir Putin, the cause of the plane crash was, in part, the presence of a Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) in the sky. On the day of the tragedy, the Russian air defense system was tracking three Ukrainian UAVs that had crossed Russian borders.

Vladimir Putin told Ilham Aliyev that the AZAL airliner was most likely hit not by submunitions, but by missile debris: two missiles fired by the Russian air defense system did not directly hit the plane, but exploded approximately 10 meters away. "That's why the pilot perceived it as a collision with a flock of birds, which he reported to Russian air traffic controllers, and all of this is recorded in the so-called black boxes. He was also offered a landing in Makhachkala, but he decided to return to his home airport and then to Kazakhstan," the Russian president explained.

"It's our duty… to provide an objective assessment of everything that happened and identify the true causes. But this takes time. It will probably take some more time to finally put an end to this," Putin noted.

Russia will do everything necessary to provide compensation in connection with the plane crash, he added.

For his part, Ilham Aliyev expressed gratitude to Vladimir Putin for the information provided. "You are personally overseeing the investigation, and we had no doubt that it would objectively resolve everything. Therefore, I would like to express my gratitude once again for considering it necessary to address this issue at our meeting," the Kremlin's official website quotes Ilham Aliyev as saying.

The Russian President emphasized that, despite the tragedy and the circumstances surrounding it, the two countries' mutual interests are close or coincide in many areas.

"Despite this, our interests, our mutual interests in many areas, coincide and are very close. And above all, of course, this concerns trade and economic ties," Vladimir Putin said.

Moscow, October 9 (Xinhua) – Russia is making a significant contribution to maintaining peace and stability in the Central Asian region by developing defense, military-technical, anti-terrorism, and anti-drug cooperation with Tajikistan. Russian President Vladimir Putin stated this on Thursday following Russian-Tajik talks in Dushanbe.

"Russia traditionally makes a significant contribution to maintaining peace and stability in the Central Asian region. We actively cooperate with our Tajik colleagues, developing defense, military-technical, anti-terrorism, and anti-drug cooperation," the Kremlin website quotes the Russian leader as saying.

Vladimir Putin emphasized that Russia's 201st military base in Tajikistan is one of the guarantors of security in the republic and throughout the region.

BEIJING, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) — There is nothing credible about the U.S. House Select Committee on China, which continues to attack and smear China for its own political purposes, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said on Thursday.

Guo Jiakun made the statement while commenting at the request of the media on a recently published investigation by the committee that spread disinformation and proposed restrictions on normal educational exchanges and cooperation between the two countries.

"The Chinese side has made a stern reprimand to the Americans regarding this irresponsible investigation," Guo Jiakun emphasized.

Educational exchanges and cooperation between China and the United States are mutually beneficial, meet the interests of both sides, and also meet the expectations of the two countries and promote interaction and mutual understanding between their peoples, the Chinese Foreign Ministry representative added.

He noted that some American politicians are generalizing their concept of national security, interfering with, and disrupting normal educational cooperation, as well as interpersonal and cultural exchanges between the two countries. These attempts will not find popular support and will certainly fail.

China calls on the US to fulfill President Donald Trump's promise to welcome Chinese students to study in the US and stop harming the interests of relevant parties and China-US relations, Guo Jiakun said, adding that China will closely monitor the US's words and actions and do everything necessary to firmly safeguard its legitimate rights and interests. -0-

China is willing to work with India to view and develop bilateral relations from a strategic perspective and a long-term perspective, become good-neighborly and friendly friends and partners who contribute to each other's success, bring greater benefits to the peoples of the two countries, and make due contributions to peace and prosperity in Asia and the world, Guo Jiakun concluded. -0-

Gaza, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) — The ceasefire agreement in Gaza will take effect immediately after the Israeli government approves it, senior Hamas official Osama Hamdan announced on Thursday.

In an interview with Qatar's Al Arabi television channel, he stated that the agreement would end the fighting in Gaza. A hostage exchange will not take place until a complete cessation of hostilities is declared, Hamdan emphasized.

"The ceasefire was supposed to go into effect at 12:00 local time (09:00 GMT), but the agreement still requires the Israeli government's approval. Therefore, the international community must monitor Israel's actions to ensure compliance with the agreement and prevent attempts to circumvent it," Hamdan said.

According to him, the first stage of the agreement will include the withdrawal of Israeli troops from “Gaza City, the northern areas, Rafah and Khan Yunis, as well as the opening of five checkpoints for the entry of humanitarian aid.”

"Drone operations over Gaza will be suspended during the prisoner release process," a Hamas spokesman said, adding that Israel would release 250 Palestinians serving life sentences and 1,700 other prisoners.

“The distribution of aid will be controlled by international agencies, not the Gaza Humanitarian Fund,” Hamdan added.

He stressed that the governance of Gaza is a “national matter” and “external interference is unacceptable.”

Since Monday, delegations from Israel and Hamas, with the mediation of Qatar, Egypt and the United States, have been holding talks in the Egyptian city of Sharm el-Sheikh. –0–
