Almaty, October 23 (Xinhua) – Twelve people were killed in a car accident in the Aktobe region of western Kazakhstan, the Kazinform news agency reported on Thursday, citing the regional police department.

A truck and a passenger car collided on the Samara-Shymkent highway near the village of Belkopa. According to preliminary reports, the truck crossed into oncoming traffic.

As a result of the accident, both drivers and 10 passengers of the truck died at the scene, five people were taken to the hospital.

UNITED NATIONS, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) — China's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Fu Cong, speaking at the Security Council on Wednesday, called on the Syrian transitional government to fulfill its obligations to fight terrorism.

The prolonged turmoil in Syria has provided space for the spread of terrorism, he stated. Foreign terrorists have taken advantage of the chaos in Syria to gain strength, which not only poses a direct threat to Syria's security but also seriously undermines peace and stability in the region, the diplomat added.

Urumqi, October 23 (Xinhua) — A truck under the TIR (International Road Transport) system recently departed from Urumqi in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (XUAR), leaving the country through the Takeshiken checkpoint, crossing Mongolia, and arriving in Belarus in 10 days. This is the first such truck to travel along the Asian Highway AH4 route, which runs through China, Mongolia, and Russia, after it enters trial operation in September 2023.

This truck carries general-purpose goods with a total weight of 16.7 tonnes, instead of the single-type, high-added-value cargo traditionally carried by vehicles under the TIR system.

These mail items will be delivered throughout the country, marking the resumption of operations at the Torugart International Postal Exchange Station between China and Kyrgyzstan.

The Torugart checkpoint is located in Utsya County, Kyzylsu Kyrgyz Autonomous Prefecture, in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, at an altitude of approximately 3,800 meters above sea level. BEIJING, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) — Electricity consumption, a key barometer of China's economic activity, showed a steady increase in September this year, official data showed Thursday.

Overall, electricity consumption in September increased by 4.5 percent year-on-year to reach 888.6 billion kWh, the National Energy Administration of China reported.

Pyongyang, October 23 (Xinhua) — North Korea's General Rocket Department successfully tested a major weapons system on Wednesday, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported on Thursday.
