Astana, October 23 (Xinhua) — There are approximately 189 snow leopards living in Kazakhstan, more than double the number in the 1990s, Kazinform reported on Thursday, citing the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

According to the agency, in the 1990s, the snow leopard population in the country was at a critical level—approximately 80-100 individuals. Vice Minister of Ecology Nurken Sharbiyev noted that systematic conservation and monitoring measures have enabled a steady increase in the rare predator's population.

"Today, approximately 70 percent of snow leopard habitats are protected. Specially protected natural areas covering a total of 3.6 million hectares have been established," N. Sharbiev said on Thursday.

The Vice Minister added that in order to study and preserve the population, 11 snow leopards were fitted with satellite collars, which allows them to track their movements and improve the protection system.

International Snow Leopard Day is celebrated annually on October 23. This symbol of Central Asia's mountain ecosystems and wildlife is included in the Red Data Book of Kazakhstan.

The opening of transport arteries stimulates the joint development of the region

In recent years, China's northeast region has been actively promoting integrated transport development, improving the efficiency of passenger and freight transportation and unlocking its development potential.

On September 28 of this year, the Shenyang-Changbaishan high-speed railway was put into operation. This line allows the Changbaishan region, eastern Jilin, and Liaoning to be actively integrated into the overall development strategy of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region and the Bohai Sea region.

On the same day, the Jilin section of the G331 tourist highway, which is being built along the border to promote opening up, was opened. The 1,240-kilometer section is a major project of China's 14th Five-Year Plan.

According to Ding Zhaoyong, associate professor at the Department of Economics at Jilin University, the opening of the two major transportation arteries will significantly accelerate the joint development of urban agglomerations in the Northeast, as well as regional integration, exchange, and cooperation.

Modern agriculture helps fertile soil "produce gold"

Golden autumn in October fills the black lands of Northeast China with the joy of harvest.

Li Ying, Director of the Heilongjiang Provincial Food and Material Reserves Bureau, reported that Heilongjiang views modern, large-scale agriculture as a key development area. The province has achieved 100% coverage of high-quality seeds for major crops, and the contribution of scientific and technological progress to agriculture has reached 70%.

Creating a new height for openness

In recent days, the border city of Suifenhe in Heilongjiang Province has been experiencing an influx of foreign tourists strolling through the streets, relaxing and enjoying the unique charm of Chinese cities.

The port of Hunchun, located at the junction of the borders of China, Russia, and North Korea, is bustling with activity. The Northeast Asia Cross-Border E-Commerce Industrial Park in Hunchun offers a wide range of imported goods. Peng Shuhai, deputy secretary of the CPC Working Committee of the Hunchun Demonstration Zone, noted that cross-border e-commerce allows consumers to purchase goods from around the world without leaving their homes.

According to statistics, Jilin Province's foreign trade volume through the customs cross-border e-commerce management platform reached RMB 5.2 billion in 2024. The first half of this year saw strong growth, with foreign trade volume reaching RMB 3.56 billion, a 68.3% increase compared to the same period last year.

The Sixth China Liaoning International Investment and Trade Fair, held in Shenyang in September of this year, brought together a number of Fortune Global 500 companies and economic promotion organizations. Actual foreign investment in Liaoning in the first half of this year amounted to USD 2.87 billion, a 126.3% increase compared to the same period last year.

Brussels, October 23 (Xinhua) — European Union (EU) member states on Wednesday adopted the 19th package of sanctions against Russia over the conflict in Ukraine, which includes a ban on imports of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG), according to the Danish Presidency of the Council of the EU.

“We are pleased to announce that we have just received notification from the remaining Member State that it is prepared to withdraw its objections to the 19th sanctions package,” the statement said.

Slovakia was the last country to object to the text approved by EU countries last week. According to media reports, Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico asked the European Commission for assurances regarding high energy prices and the need to align climate goals with the interests of automakers and heavy industry.

The LNG import ban will be implemented in two stages: short-term contracts will expire in six months, while long-term contracts will end on January 1, 2027. The full ban will come into effect a year earlier than envisaged in the commission's original action plan to reduce the bloc's dependence on Russian fossil fuels.

Additional travel restrictions for Russian diplomats are also being introduced, along with measures against 117 vessels in Russia's shadow fleet, primarily tankers. Denmark announced that 588 vessels will also be subject to EU sanctions.

The sanctions were imposed after a resumption of cross-border attacks between Russia and Ukraine in recent days.

Russian missiles struck several areas of Kyiv on Wednesday night, killing six people and causing power outages across the country, Ukrainian officials said Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the Russian Defense Ministry announced on Tuesday that its air defense systems intercepted 137 Ukrainian drones. Ukrainian forces said they struck a chemical plant in Russia's Bryansk region, a key facility for the production of gunpowder, explosives, and rocket fuel.
