URUMQI, Nov. 6 (Xinhua) — A snowstorm that has raged across many parts of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region since Wednesday has disrupted traffic in several areas and set a new rainfall record in Urumqi, the region's capital.

According to the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Meteorological Center, as of 8:00 a.m. Thursday, 538 weather stations across Xinjiang had recorded rain or snow, with 77 of them experiencing blizzards. Eleven localities, including Urumqi and the Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture, were hit by powerful snowstorms.

According to the center, 35.6 mm of rain fell in Urumqi in one day, which was the highest amount ever recorded in the city in November.

"The epicenter of this snowfall cycle was in the village of Turgen in the Ili-Kazakh Autonomous Okrug, where 40.8 mm of snow fell in 24 hours," noted Chen Chunyan, the center's leading weather forecaster.

The snowstorm disrupted both road and rail travel throughout the region. Local authorities reported that as of Thursday morning, sections of major highways, including the G7, G216, and G335, were partially or completely closed, with a reopening time to be determined.

The local branch of China Railways announced on Thursday that passenger train C802, which runs between Urumqi and Korla, was suspended due to severe weather conditions.

The Xinjiang Meteorological Center predicts that snowfall in some areas of the region will intensify in the next few days, which could potentially adversely affect the safety of tourist travel. -0-

Pyongyang, November 6 (Xinhua) — The Foreign Ministry of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) on Thursday condemned the United States for imposing unilateral sanctions against the country, the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported.

“The new US administration recently imposed its exceptional sanctions against the DPRK, the fifth since it came to power,” said Kim Eun-chol, North Korea’s Deputy Foreign Minister for US Affairs, in a press release.

The current US administration is once again expressing its "unwavering hostile intentions toward the DPRK in the usual and traditional way," he noted, adding that "US sanctions will have no impact on the DPRK's thinking and views on this matter in the future."

The United States needs to pay attention to the fact that it has no ability to change the current situation between the two countries in its favor, no matter how Washington applies all its sanctions, Kim Eun Chol noted.

“Now that the current US administration has confirmed its intention to remain hostile to the DPRK until the very end, we will also take appropriate measures to patiently confront them for any period of time,” he concluded. –0–
