UN, November 7 /Xinhua/ — Damages caused by Hurricane Melissa in Jamaica are estimated at approximately 30 percent of the country's GDP, Kishan Kodai, Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in the Bahamas, Belize, Bermuda, the Cayman Islands, Jamaica, and Turks and Caicos Islands, said Thursday.

"Preliminary estimates put the damage at approximately 30 percent of Jamaica's GDP, and that figure is expected to rise," Kodai told reporters via video link.

UNDP estimates that nearly 5 million metric tons of debris were generated in western Jamaica after the devastating Category 5 hurricane that hit the country last week, he noted.

UN Secretary-General's Deputy Spokesman Farhan Haq said authorities had confirmed the deaths of 32 people in Jamaica, with the hurricane affecting around 1.5 million people.

UNDP has allocated $400,000 to conduct a baseline damage assessment and provide early support to national partners. The World Food Programme (WFP) is airlifting food from Barbados to support more than 6,000 households for a week, added F. Haque.

Tehran, November 7 (Xinhua) — Iran remains a bona fide party to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Thursday during a meeting with students in Hamadan.

According to the Iranian Foreign Ministry, the head of the department cited a fatwa from Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei banning the development of nuclear weapons.

The decision on whether to remain a party to the NPT or withdraw from it was discussed at the highest level, the minister explained.

Commenting on the possibility of resuming nuclear negotiations with the United States, A. Araghchi said that Tehran had negotiated with Washington at various times and on various issues, but had never achieved positive results.

However, he emphasized that Iran has never completely rejected dialogue and diplomacy. "We say that if the United States is ready for honest negotiations on an equal basis, aimed at protecting mutual interests, then so are we. But we don't see such an approach or spirit from the Americans," the minister stated.

Tehran suspended cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in June under a parliamentary law, citing the IAEA's failure to condemn Israeli and US attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities earlier that month and raising concerns about the safety of its facilities and scientists.

UN, November 6 /Xinhua/ — The UN and its partners are stepping up assistance following the earthquake that struck northern Afghanistan earlier this week. Deputy Representative of the UN Secretary-General Farhan Haq announced this at a daily briefing on Thursday.

According to authorities, 25 people were killed and nearly 1,000 injured in Monday's earthquake, he said. The UN estimates that approximately 800 homes were damaged.

Immediate priorities include the provision of temporary shelter materials, warm clothing, cash for heating, and repair kits for damaged homes, said F. Haq. There is also an urgent need for additional medical support, particularly mobile clinics, trauma care in remote areas, and expanded ambulance capacity and referrals to specialist doctors, he added.

The UN and its partners are delivering aid on the ground, F. Haq reported. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is providing tents, shelter kits, and blankets, the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) and its partners are distributing clothing and hygiene kits, and the World Food Programme (WFP) is supplying food, including high-energy biscuits, he noted.

The World Health Organization (WHO) and its partners have delivered emergency medical supplies and are assisting local authorities in coordinating and providing services, said F. Haq.

"The UN continues to call on Member States to support the people of Afghanistan in meeting their humanitarian needs. The $2.4 billion Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan is only 35 percent funded, with $857 million received to date," he said.
