LONDON, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) — London is facing transport chaos as members of Britain's Rail, Maritime and Transport Union (RMT) stage a series of strikes.

The strikes were planned for September 7-12, leading to an early shutdown on Sunday evening and the closure of the entire London Underground network for four days from Monday.

This means that until Friday the metro will operate in a limited mode or will not operate at all, which will lead to significant inconvenience for passengers.

The strikes come after talks between the RMT and Transport for London (TfL) over pay and a shorter working week failed.

In a statement, the RMT said "management's dismissive approach" had caused anger and distrust among staff, who voted overwhelmingly to take strike action.

“We call on RMT to pause this action, provide their workers with our fair and affordable offer and continue discussions with us,” TfL chief operating officer Claire Mann said ahead of the strikes.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan said on his X social media page on Monday that he continues to “urge RMT and TfL to come to the negotiating table and resolve their differences.” –0–

BEIJING, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) — Artists from China and Kazakhstan painted landscapes of Mount Baishifeng in Qapqal Xibo Autonomous County in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region on Monday, marking the official launch of cultural exchange activities between renowned artists from the two countries, Chinanews.com.cn reported.

At the foot of the mountain, artists from both countries not only created works from life, but also evaluated each other's works and shared painting techniques. "Our Kazakh colleagues use bright colors that perfectly convey the autumn colors of Ili, and when we paint mountain landscapes, we emphasize minimalism and understatement, which is typical of Chinese landscape paintings. These two techniques unexpectedly gave rise to a fresh and unique aesthetic," said Yan Ming, one of the participants from the Chinese side of the event.

During the 5-day event, artists from the two countries are also expected to visit several tourist areas with breathtaking natural scenery and unique folk customs in Ili to capture the socio-economic development of the county on their canvases. An exhibition of creative works and an art salon will be held after the plein air.

Deputy head of the county artists' association Qi Yafeng called these canvases not just works of art, but also a “visual diary of Chinese-Kazakh friendship.” -0-

BEIJING, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) — It's September 2025 in Heihe, northeast China's Heilongjiang Province. The waters of the Heilongjiang (Amur) River along the border sparkle in the sun, and Russian tourists with suitcases line up for passport control at the Heihe border checkpoint. The mix of Chinese and Russian speech has become a common "soundtrack" for this Chinese border city.

According to the Internet portal sohu.com, from January to August this year, Heihe received a total of 386,000 cross-border tourists, of which more than 70 percent were Russian tourists. These figures reflect the real lively picture of Heihe's cross-border cultural and tourism activities as a key city on the Sino-Russian border.

Early Monday mornings are especially busy at Heihe International Bus Station. At 7:30 a.m., the first hovercraft carrying 87 Chinese tourists departed for the opposite bank, while the same number of Russian tourists arrived in Heihe. This synchronous two-way flow has become the norm for the two cities separated by the river. In August alone, 68,000 people underwent customs inspection and passport checks at the border checkpoint, which is 23.5 percent more than in the same period in 2024. Russian tourists mainly arrive from the Amur Region, Khabarovsk Krai and other regions of the Russian Far East, and Chinese tourists from three northeastern provinces, but their geography is gradually expanding to other regions of China.

Heihe constantly holds various cultural and sports events, greatly enriching the content of cultural tourism and maintaining the “degree” of the market. The national music concert “Six Cities of Two Countries”, the Sino-Russian art exhibition on the theme of winter painting, the fifth exhibition of art works by teenagers from three provinces and regions of China and Russia – all these cultural events have opened an artistic dialogue that goes beyond national borders.

Cross-border sports events such as the Heilongjiang River Crossing Race and the 2025 Heihe International Badminton Tournament also enhance Heihe's appeal to tourists from other regions.

As of the end of August, the city had held 102 different cross-border cultural and tourism events, an average of nearly 13 per month. The data confirms the intensity of cultural activity: from January to August, the Heihe Museum received 42,000 Russian visitors, 31 percent more than in the same period last year; the China-Russia National Culture Park held 27 events on cross-border wedding customs, attended by 362 Russian families; and the Russian-language tour guide service at the Aigun History Memorial Hall was used more than 5,800 times.

According to the Heihe Municipal Bureau of Commerce, by the end of August, 27 cross-border O2O stores in Heihe had served a total of 153,000 overseas consumers, resulting in domestic tourism product sales of over 280 million yuan.

The night economy is also booming. Every evening at 8 o'clock, the lights come on in the Chinese-Russian Color Street on the bank of the Heilongjiang River, Russian vendors advertise nesting dolls and chocolate in Chinese, and Chinese vendors call out customers in Russian for "tanghulu" (candied fruits and berries on a stick) and tea. According to statistics, the night market is visited by an average of 6,000 people daily, of which about 40 percent are Russian customers.

Convenient transportation is the basis for the prosperity of cross-border cultural tourism. From January to August 2025, water transport, represented in particular by hovercraft and paddle steamers, carried 364 thousand passengers, 121 thousand passengers rode on the winter pontoon bridge, and the new Heihe-Blagoveshchensk helicopter line carried 3,200 VIP tourists. Construction work on the cross-border cable car between Blagoveshchensk and Heihe has not yet been completed, but the observation deck has already become a new point of attraction. After completion, the capacity of the cable car in one direction will be 1,800 people per hour, which will completely solve the problem of seasonal restrictions on the operation of river transport.

Faced with the growing cross-border flow of people, Heihe has established a complete management and service system. The Heihe Immigration Bureau has set up a 24-hour bilingual hotline and developed a cross-border tourism app that provides up-to-date information on both sides' policies.

When night falls, lights are lit on both sides of the Heilongjiang River. Peking opera arias from Heihe and Russian folk songs from the opposite bank magically merge on the surface of the river. Tourists from both banks travel back and forth on boats, and this border river becomes a cultural hub connecting China and Russia.

Heihe also has many advantages such as free trade zone, comprehensive pilot zone for cross-border e-commerce, key pilot zone for developing and expanding border opening, which creates favorable policy conditions for the development of cross-border tourism. The city has buildings in various European architectural styles, and the cuisine combines authentic Northeast China cuisine and Russian dishes, which in turn provides tourists with a unique experience and unforgettable impressions. -0-

Four NSU students received an offer for an internship at Russia's largest IT holding following an educational intensive course

Translation. Region: Russian Federal

Source: Novosibirsk State University –

An important disclaimer is at the bottom of this article.

The final of the educational intensive course has ended in Novosibirsk, during which 18 students from Siberia received offers for internships at the country's largest IT holding company, T1, with four NSU students among the winners. The competitive selection for the internship was held among more than 7,000 applications from all over Russia. The final defense of the projects, which the students had been working on for two months, took place on August 28 at the Novosibirsk State University, with 38 students from different parts of Siberia participating.

As part of the intensive course, participants developed and presented their own solutions for real business cases, including the creation of a tool for booking meeting rooms and a service for verifying digital signatures.

In Novosibirsk, following the final defense of cases from real business customers of T1, the first place was taken by a team of six students, including Natalia Bedareva from NSU. While working on the projects, Natalia's team developed the corporate discussion service "MUZA". With its help, employees of the client company will be able to quickly resolve work issues, save the best cases, and also get access to a verified knowledge base, which will reduce the time it takes to find information. The holding will use the ideas and solutions of the camp participants in the further implementation of its own IT projects. Three more students from Novosibirsk State University became winners of the IT camp: Andrey Dutkin (2nd place), Dmitry Lutsev (2nd place) and Alina Brysina (3rd place).

IT holding T1 has been holding a summer educational bootcamp for the second year in a row, so that students from all over the country could try themselves in large projects, gain practical experience and take their first steps in their careers. This year, interest in the camp has grown significantly: the organizers received more than 7,000 applications – two and a half times more than in 2024. Almost 3,000 people passed the entrance test, and the best of them – over 1,500 students from 459 universities in the country – were enrolled in the intensive course. 73% of them are students of technical specialties from regional universities. The T1 IT camp was held in a hybrid format: the first remote stage was replaced by in-person team work on projects. The final defenses, in addition to Novosibirsk, also took place in Yekaterinburg and Moscow.

— The practice of the T1 IT camp once again confirms that regional training centers are becoming no less important than the capital. Novosibirsk is one of the main scientific and educational hubs of the country, and here we see very motivated and talented students ready for serious challenges in the IT sphere. I am glad that many of those whom I was lucky enough to meet during the defense of the final projects joined the T1 team in order to implement large-scale projects with us in the future, — noted Mikhail Knigin, Executive Director of T1 Integration (part of the T1 IT holding).

At the beginning of the training, the participants were given the opportunity to choose a specialization of training. The most popular was system analytics – every fourth student from Novosibirsk chose it. No less in demand were backend and frontend development, as well as manual testing and application administration.

Alina Brysina said that the process of working on the project became a real challenge for her.

— We received a very complex and detailed technical task, which turned out to be practically impossible to implement in such a short time frame with the number of people we had on the team. It was very difficult to understand which solution to choose. We had several types of administrators for the technical task in the project, and we decided to leave one, but because we did not record this requirement, the decision was ultimately difficult. It was as if everyone was speaking different languages, — shared Alina.

Alina was a systems analyst on the team and learned to be much more punctual, attentive to details and ask precise questions.

"I learned a lot from my colleagues and realized that large IT companies need reporting that is actually used. All the documents that a system analyst prepares are not just put into a drawer," she added.

Alina also emphasized that the team’s support helped her not to give up and continue working on the project, which allowed her to show excellent results and achieve victory.

SPbPU scientists have created the first analytical platform in Russia for designing optical systems

Translation. Region: Russian Federal

Source: Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University –

An important disclaimer is at the bottom of this article.

Scientists from Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University have created a unified database of chalcogenide glasses, which contains more than 20,000 records of their compositions and properties. The database is based on information published in scientific studies over the past 50 years, and includes most of the existing experimental results of studying the characteristics of chalcogenide glassy materials. Database chalcogenide glasses is patented and registered by the Federal Service for Intellectual Property (Rospatent). To work with the database, the Polytechnics developed a web interface that allows sorting, exporting and analyzing data by composition and properties. Thanks to this, new opportunities are opening up for the accelerated design of promising chalcogenide glasses – key materials for modern infrared optics, thermal imagers and night vision systems.

Chalcogenide glasses are amorphous inorganic materials in which oxygen atoms are replaced by sulfur, selenium or tellurium atoms. Chalcogenide glasses have attracted attention since their discovery due to their unique properties: due to the absence of oxygen in the structure, they have wide transparency in the infrared range, a high refractive index and a low softening point. The growth of practical interest in these materials in the last five years is associated with the development of thermal imaging systems and a more than threefold increase in the price of single-crystal germanium, the main material for the infrared spectral region up to 14 μm. Due to the great fragmentation and lack of systematization of published data, as well as the lack of a system for displaying the characteristics of glass compositions, the process of developing new compositions with the required set of properties has become more complex. Traditionally, it is based on the analysis of phase diagrams and the construction of local regression models.

To solve this problem, an interdisciplinary group of scientists from the Scientific and Educational Center "Nanotechnology and Coatings" of the Institute of Mechanical Engineering, Materials and Transport and the Higher School of Software Engineering of SPbPU carried out large-scale work to create a unified database. Using large language models (LLM – Large Language Model), scientists aggregated and structured information from more than 1000 scientific publications. In addition to the database itself, using artificial intelligence methods, models were developed to predict the properties of previously unknown glass compositions.

The main result of the work was not just a database, but an entire analytical platform. For the convenience of researchers, a specialized web interface has been developed that allows for prompt data analysis, comparison of results, and export of search results. To simulate the characteristics of glass before the stage of expensive laboratory synthesis, a model for predicting key glass parameters (density, softening temperature, refractive index) was developed based on machine learning models and neural networks. The proposed approach significantly reduces the time spent on developing promising compositions at the initial stage of research. In the future, it is planned to expand the scope of application of the predicted glass parameters, – said the project manager, PhD in Physics and Mathematics Victor Klinkov.

The software package can serve as a basis for the emergence of a new approach to the design of optical systems. The platform lays the foundation for a fundamentally different methodology: now it is possible to design "from the opposite" – from the characteristics required by the system to the targeted synthesis of material with the necessary parameter values. An important aspect of the project is its general availability. The platform creates a single field for scientific work, allowing both novice scientists and experienced specialists to quickly analyze their results in the context of global research practice and plan new projects.

The practical significance of the work lies in expanding the boundaries of understanding the nature of the glassy state using AI tools and in creating prerequisites for implementing these results in industrial optics design systems. Today, there are no direct analogues of the developed platform in Russia.

The work was carried out within the framework of the Blue Sky Research Digital Labs Campus project with the support of the St. Petersburg Foundation for the Support of Innovations and Youth Initiatives. Now scientists are improving the algorithmic support and expanding the functionality of the platform for the international scientific community.

KUNMING, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) — Participants at the recently held 2025 Global South Media and Think Tank Forum in southwest China's Yunnan Province praised the province's comprehensive approach to tourism development that combines environmental friendliness, cultural heritage preservation and economic growth.

After the Forum program, foreign guests visited various cities in Yunnan Province to learn about successful tourism development practices first-hand.

After visiting the museum in the Taipinghu Lake Forest Park and learning about the history of the fight against desertification in the city of Mile, the executive director of the Applikata Center for Strategic Solutions of the Kyrgyz Republic, Kubatbek Rakhimov, said that what happened here was not just a process of reclamation, but a real cultural and economic shift.

“China amazes me by constantly finding interesting, non-standard solutions,” said K. Rakhimov. He also added that the experience of developing tourism in Yunnan Province should be extrapolated and applied in other countries of the Global South.

"We all never cease to be amazed. Our Chinese colleagues have managed to develop and transform wild nature, to make every meter green. This is very surprising and wonderful," said Atay Osmonbaev, an employee of the Information Policy Department of the Kyrgyz Republic.

Deputy Director of RT Information Broadcasting Directorate Andrey Kiyashko said that Yunnan Province impressed him with its diversity and beauty, harmoniously combined with the progressive development of technology. He drew parallels with Moscow, noting common features in the greening of cities.

A. Kiyashko paid special attention to the preservation of cultural traditions in the city of Lijiang. “We were shown careful preservation of the traditions of all nations in the city of Lijiang. It was a very useful experience that revealed China to me from a new side,” he said. He is confident that the visa-free regime between Russia and China will contribute to the growth of the tourist flow.

“We saw natural attractions, a stunning ethnic show and the historical part of the city, and thus got acquainted with everything that the region is proud of,” said Daria Pankina, editor-in-chief of special projects for the KP.RU website of the Komsomolskaya Pravda media group, calling the excursion to Lijiang “excellent.”

"This province has found a balance between environmental conservation, industrial development and moving forward," she said.

According to D. Pankina, there are many projects in Russia aimed at strengthening interaction between representatives of different peoples of the country, and in China, the traditions of different ethnic groups of the population are also honored. “We saw this in the example of preserving the culture of the Naxi people in Yunnan Province.”

"The conference topic was very relevant, and the tours that were organized were also very interesting. I would like to advise and implement something in my country," said Marat Tazabekov, founder of the Kyrgyz news agency AKIpress.

A visit by media and think tanks from the Global South to Yunnan Province has clearly demonstrated that the province offers a comprehensive and sustainable development model that can serve as an inspiring example for many developing countries seeking to achieve harmonious coexistence between man and nature, and the traditional and the modern. -0-
