KINSHASA, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) — The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on Friday reshuffled its government amid a worsening security crisis in the country's east.

Presidential spokeswoman Tina Salama told state television that the new cabinet was formed after nationwide consultations to ensure efficiency and credibility, as well as political, geographic and socio-cultural balance.

Initially, it was announced that the government would be smaller than the one formed in May 2024, but the cabinet size has only decreased by one person, to 54 members. Judith Suminwa Tuluka remains prime minister.

Opposition figure Adolphe Muzito, who served as prime minister under former President Joseph Kabila, has joined the new inclusive cabinet as deputy prime minister in charge of the budget.

In late February, DRC President Felix Tshisekedi announced sweeping political changes, including plans to create a “government of national unity” to prevent the security crisis in the eastern part of the country from escalating into a wider regional conflict.

The situation in eastern DRC has been tense for decades due to ethnic tensions, local militias and foreign rebel groups operating across porous borders. The biggest threat is the March 23 Movement, which re-emerged in the region in late 2021. –0–

NAIROBI, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) — At least six people were killed and two others injured when a light air ambulance plane crashed in a residential area on the outskirts of Kenya's capital Nairobi, Kiambu County Commissioner Henry Wafula said.

"We have six people killed. Four were on board, two were on the ground. Two more were injured on the ground," he said.

Four medical workers who were on board the Cessna Citation 560 ambulance plane were killed, as were two local residents who happened to be at the crash site, the official said. The injured, including an elderly woman, were rushed to hospital.

The plane, belonging to AMREF Flying Doctors, took off from Wilson Airport in Nairobi at 2:14 p.m. local time and was bound for the northern Somali city of Hargeisa. It crashed in Mwihoko district three minutes into the flight, Kenya Civil Aviation Authority Director General Emil Arao said.

"We are deeply saddened by this tragic incident involving an air ambulance. Our first priority is to support the rescue efforts and provide all necessary assistance to the families of the victims," said E. Arao.

The statement said search and rescue operations at the crash site were being led by the Kenya Defence Forces and the National Police Service. A team from the Air Accident Investigation Department has been dispatched to determine the cause of the crash.

AMREF also confirmed the crash, saying it was fully cooperating with aviation authorities and emergency services to establish the circumstances of the crash.

Footage from the crash site shows the wreckage engulfed in flames and bystanders watching from afar. –0–

BRASILIA/NEW DELHI, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) — Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a telephone conversation on Thursday, during which the two sides reaffirmed their commitment to bilateral cooperation and multilateralism amid rising global trade tensions.

The two leaders exchanged views on various regional and global issues of mutual interest. “They recalled the goal of increasing bilateral trade to more than US$20 billion by 2030. They also agreed to expand the scope of the agreement between the countries of the Common Market of the South (Mercosur) and India,” the Brazilian presidential office said in a statement.

On his page on the social network X, the Indian prime minister called the conversation “good.”

“We are committed to deepening our strategic partnerships in areas such as trade, energy, technology, defense and health. Strong, people-centered partnerships among countries of the Global South benefit everyone,” he wrote.

L.I. Lula da Silva has confirmed that he will visit India on a state visit in early 2026. In preparation, Brazilian Vice President Geraldo Alckmin will visit India in October to attend a meeting of the Trade Monitoring Mechanism, accompanied by ministers and business leaders.

The telephone conversation also touched on cooperation within BRICS. The leaders of the two countries reviewed the results of the recent BRICS summit in Brazil and discussed coordination of actions in connection with India's upcoming chairmanship of the bloc.

The conversation between the leaders of Brazil and India came shortly after the United States announced a sharp increase in tariffs on goods from the two countries. –0–

GENEVA, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) — World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Thursday that desperation in the Gaza Strip had led to a breakdown in law and order, calling for the creation of humanitarian corridors to evacuate people in need of urgent medical care outside the enclave.

“People are dying not only from hunger and disease, but also in a desperate search for food,” the WHO director-general said at a briefing in Geneva, noting that since May 27, more than 1,600 people have died and almost 12,000 have been injured while trying to collect food from distribution points.

Gazans have limited access to basic services, face constant displacement and are currently suffering from a blockade of food supplies, he said.

“Malnutrition is widespread and deaths from hunger are rising,” he said, adding that nearly 12,000 children under five suffered from acute malnutrition in July, the highest monthly figure ever.

Overcrowding and deteriorating water, sanitation and hygiene conditions have allowed diseases to continue to spread, seriously affecting the health of the youngest people, he said.

On July 29, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, the World Food Programme and the UN Children's Fund issued a joint statement warning that the Gaza Strip was at risk of full-scale famine as key food and nutrition indicators continued to deteriorate.

The WHO Director-General said the organization had assisted in the evacuation of 7,522 patients from Gaza since the conflict began in October 2023, but more than 14,800 patients in the enclave still urgently need specialized medical care. He called on more countries to accept patients and speed up medical evacuations by all means possible. –0–

"Russian companies have serious export potential in China. They value quality, eco-friendliness and naturalness – everything that distinguishes Russian brands," noted Veronika Nikishina, General Director of the Russian Export Center.

According to her, the upcoming fair will continue the series of successful “Made in Russia” festivals, which over the past year and a half have taken place in Dalian, Chengdu, Harbin, Shenyang and demonstrated the keen interest of Chinese partners and consumers in “Made in Russia”.

According to the REC, the festival guests will also enjoy a rich cultural program. Performances by folk groups, national music and dances will create a festive atmosphere and make the event a notable event in the cultural life of Beijing.

It has been announced that during the festival-fair in Beijing, the first two official retail stores “Made in Russia” will open in the region, where the best products of Russian manufacturers will be presented – from organic food products to consumer goods.

BEIJING, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) — In the first seven months of this year, financial institutions in the Chinese part of the China-Kazakhstan International Cross-Border Cooperation Center (ICBC) "Khorgos", located in the city of the same name in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (XUAR), reported the cross-border movement of 38 batches of cash, including 471 million yuan and 450 million tenge, the Xinjiang Daily newspaper reported, citing data from customs services of the ICBC "Khorgos".

According to the data, both indicators increased 44 and 7.5 times year-on-year, respectively.

The significant increase in the amount of cash transferred was due to the growing flow of visitors to the above-mentioned center and the subsequent consumer boom, the customs emphasized. According to previously published data, as of August 3, the flow of visitors to the Khorgos ICBC this year exceeded the mark of 6 million people-times, increasing by 66 percent year-on-year and reaching a historical maximum for the same period of previous years.

The cross-border cash exchange effectively meets the needs of Chinese and Kazakh enterprises and residents for foreign exchange and payments in local currencies in cross-border trade, as well as tourism and shopping, the customs control service of the Khorgos ICBC reported.

The first time that cash tenge was exchanged in China was in the center in 2018.

The Khorgos International Centre of Broadcasting and the city of the same name will create cross-border financial services centres aimed at enterprises in China and Central Asian countries, according to the Plan for the Construction of a Regional Financial Centre in the Key Zone of the Silk Road Economic Belt for 2016-2030. -0-

WASHINGTON, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) — U.S. President Donald Trump said on Thursday that a meeting between the leaders of Russia and Ukraine is not a prerequisite for his face-to-face talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. This will be the first face-to-face meeting between the two leaders during Trump's second term.

Asked by a reporter at the White House on Thursday afternoon whether Vladimir Putin should meet with the Ukrainian president before sitting down at the negotiating table with Donald Trump, the US president answered in the negative.

White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt said shortly before Trump's speech in the Oval Office that "the Russians have expressed a desire to meet with President Trump, and the President is open to that meeting."

“President Trump would like to meet with both President Putin and President Zelensky because he wants to see this brutal war end,” she said, adding that the White House “is working out the details of these potential meetings and the details will be provided at the appropriate time.”

Earlier on Thursday, the Kremlin said that a meeting between D. Trump and V. Putin had been agreed upon in principle and would take place “in the coming days.” –0–
