BEIJING, October 4 (Xinhua) — In 2024, the number of Chinese tourists visiting the country's coastal cities increased by more than 14 percent year-on-year, and the total passenger traffic at the country's cruise ports exceeded the previous year's figure by 11 times, according to the China Maritime Development Index 2025 Report, released by the National Maritime Data and Information Center (NMDIS) and the China Maritime Affairs Association (CAMA) in September.

According to the report, the continued rise of marine tourism in China is driven by the steady improvement of the country's marine environment.

The quality of sea water remains generally stable, with the share of good quality sea water (first and second category) in coastal waters amounting to 83.7% in 2024.

The pressure on the marine environment has been effectively reduced: in 2024, total direct emissions of key pollutants into the sea, subject to priority monitoring, were reduced by more than 35% compared to 2015.

As marine protection and restoration progressed systematically, in 2024, China's marine environment remained stable, with improvements observed in some waters. The condition of coral reefs, seagrass beds, coastal salt marshes, and mangrove ecosystems was generally assessed as good. -0-

Beijing, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) — "My wife loves shopping, and the shopping malls in Sanya really suit her preferences. She found many of her favorite clothing brands here," said a Russian tourist named Oleg, accompanying his partner to the Joy City shopping mall in Sanya, Hainan Province, southern China.

The seaside resort town of Sanya on Hainan Island, with its luxurious scenery, has always attracted large numbers of Russian tourists. Besides sunbathing on the seaside beaches, the city's shopping malls are now becoming a "new favorite" for visitors from Russia.

Foreign tourists are common in Sanya's many shopping malls. A wide selection of brands, a comfortable shopping environment, and convenient payment methods have created favorable conditions for tourists, reports the Zhongxinshe News Agency.

“It was getting cold in Russia, so I bought a scarf as a gift for my little sister,” said a young man named Artur from Russia, strolling between different shops with his friends, holding a drink in his hand.

According to him, the weather in Sanya is relatively hot, and the temperature in the shopping malls is very comfortable. "The shopping malls offer delicacies from various countries. We tried Japanese cuisine, and it was delicious," he added.

Signs in multiple languages, including English, Russian, and Korean, are ubiquitous in shopping malls and stores. They also offer numerous measures to simplify procedures for foreign tourists.

As the first shopping mall in Sanya to complete the transformation of the consumer payment facilitation system for inbound tourists, Joy City in Sanya also installed a foreign currency exchange office and implemented the Alipay digital payment service.

According to Oleg, you can exchange currency in cash at the shopping center, which is very convenient.

"Since its opening on October 1st last year, our store has welcomed over 150,000 foreign tourists, accounting for 60 percent of our total visitor numbers," said He Xiangxue, deputy manager of the New Balance store in Joy City. To this end, the store has installed bilingual signage in Chinese and Russian, and its staff is bilingual, making shopping easier for international customers.

The mall's buffets are also popular with foreign tourists. "We offer Chinese and Western dishes, desserts, fruits, seafood, and other food items. Foreign guests can see the ingredients firsthand, making the selection process easier," said Xiao Feng, director of one such restaurant.

As Xiao Feng explained, in most cases, half of the restaurant's customers are foreigners, primarily from Russian-speaking countries, South Korea, Mongolia, and elsewhere. "Currently, there is still a trend of increasing the proportion of foreign guests visiting the restaurant," he added. -0-
