Roseau, October 11 (Xinhua) — President of the Commonwealth of Dominica Sylvani Burton expressed gratitude to Chinese President Xi Jinping for his support of women's causes. She stated this recently in an exclusive interview with Xinhua.

The convening of the Global Summit for Women on the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action provides an opportunity to reflect on the progress made in promoting women's development, she said.

According to S. Burton, at the upcoming event she hopes to learn how people can contribute to the development of the women's movement around the world and what has been done in China to improve the living standards of women and their families.

According to her, the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, adopted at the Fourth UN World Conference on Women in 1995, had a profoundly transformative impact on the international arena. Following this, the world began to view women's empowerment and equality more positively.

“For us here in Dominica, after the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, we made sure that the Government of Dominica ensured that every time we allocated budgetary funds, we would have to demonstrate that we would empower women or create some kind of opportunity to achieve gender equality,” the President said.

China has supported women's development through concrete measures, providing essential and accessible funding for grassroots initiatives and the most vulnerable women. Now, they can develop independently, improve their living standards, and secure housing and adequate education, noted S. Burton.

"China can show us in many sectors how we can empower women and raise their living standards to employ them not only locally but also internationally, and how well we can see women representing their countries, communities, and families, negotiating, and working on their behalf," the agency's interlocutor emphasized.

According to the president, since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Dominica in 2004, projects implemented with Chinese support have improved the living standards of local residents and expanded opportunities for women in the Caribbean state.

S. Burton praised China's vision of building a community with a shared future for humanity and the Global Governance Initiative, recognizing their importance in promoting women's development.

The President expressed hope to learn from best practices at the upcoming summit and propose practical solutions for Dominica to continue advancing women's empowerment and gender equality. "We hope the meeting will be successful," she added.

UNITED NATIONS, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) — China's permanent representative to the United Nations Fu Cong expressed deep concern at an emergency Security Council meeting on Friday over rising tensions in the Caribbean, saying U.S. military operations near Venezuela are destabilizing the region.

The US recently deployed forces to Caribbean waters off the coast of Venezuela under the pretext of combating drug trafficking, he said. There are reports of US military personnel sinking Venezuelan vessels, opening fire on sailors, and seizing fishing boats, the diplomat noted, adding that these actions have led to ongoing tensions in the region.

"Unilateral and excessive US military action against another country's vessels in so-called international waters violates the right to life and other fundamental human rights," Fu Cong stated. He added that this situation threatens the freedom and safety of navigation and could undermine the rights of states to operate on the high seas.

The US operations "seriously infringe on the sovereignty, security, and legitimate rights and interests of other countries," the Permanent Representative emphasized, calling them a gross violation of international law and a threat to regional peace and stability.

China opposes any actions that violate the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, Fu Cong stated. "We oppose the threat or use of force in international relations, as well as interference by external forces in Venezuela's internal affairs under any pretext," he emphasized.

The Permanent Representative called on the United States to immediately cease its illegal actions to prevent further escalation and not to “use the pretext of combating drug trafficking to jeopardize the safety of navigation of all countries and the freedoms and rights they enjoy under international law.”

Beijing supports international cooperation in combating transnational crime and calls on Washington to develop cooperation in law enforcement and judicial matters based on bilateral and multilateral legal frameworks, Fu Cong said. –0–

BEIJING, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) — Trade between east China's Fujian Province and Central and Eastern European countries (CEE) totaled 24.78 billion yuan (about 3.5 billion U.S. dollars) from January to July 2025, up 4.5 percent year-on-year. Exports, in particular, increased 8.2 percent year-on-year to 22.1 billion yuan, according to a statement posted on the official website of the General Administration of Customs (GAC).

Central and Eastern European countries are an important driving force in the joint construction of the Belt and Road Initiative. As the number of Fujian cities sending freight by rail to Europe grows, trade and economic ties between the province and the countries of the region are becoming ever closer.

According to customs statistics, since trade volume between Fujian and CEE countries exceeded 10 billion yuan in 2007, it has grown by an average of 8.2 percent annually, reaching 41.8 billion yuan in 2024.

The STU report notes that private enterprises play a key role in developing trade relations between Fujian and Central and Eastern European countries. In the first seven months of 2025, they exported and imported goods worth 14.5 billion yuan to and from Central and Eastern Europe, a 13.5 percent increase year-on-year.

Poland, Greece, Hungary, and the Czech Republic are Fujian Province's main trading partners in Central and Eastern Europe. From January to July, Fujian's trade with Poland amounted to RMB 10 billion, or 40.4 percent of the province's total trade with Central and Eastern Europe. Hungary led the growth in trade with Fujian, with bilateral trade volume jumping 94.3 percent to RMB 2.82 billion in the first seven months of this year.

Electromechanical products are Fujian Province's most important export item to Central and Eastern Europe. From January to July, Fujian exported 12.84 billion yuan worth of such products to these countries, a 10.1 percent increase year-on-year, and their share of Fujian's total exports to Central and Eastern Europe approached 60 percent.
