BEIJING, Dec. 3 (Xinhua) — China opposes unilateral sanctions that violate international law and have not been authorized by the UN Security Council, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said on Wednesday.

Lin Jian made these statements at a regular press conference, commenting at the media's request on the European Commission's recent proposal to use frozen Russian assets to finance Ukraine.

All parties should contribute to the creation of a positive atmosphere and favorable conditions for advancing peace talks and facilitating a political settlement of the Ukrainian crisis, and not the other way around, the Chinese diplomat concluded. -0-

Beijing, December 3 /Xinhua/ — On December 1, Russian President Vladimir Putin issued a decree allowing Chinese citizens to travel to Russia visa-free for up to 30 days until September 14, 2026, based on the principle of reciprocity.

"This innovation will further increase Chinese tourists' interest in traveling to Russia this winter," the newspaper Zhongguo Wenhuabao (Chinese Culture) reported on Wednesday, citing industry insiders. It added that border officials at the Chinese-Russian border are predicting a rapid increase in tourist flow from China to Russia.

According to the newspaper, on the day Russia announced the introduction of a visa-free regime for Chinese citizens, the Beijing-based Chinese travel search engine Qunar recorded a sharp increase in searches for flights to Russia. This was especially true for flights from Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Chengdu to St. Petersburg and Moscow.

“Although Russia is currently not in peak tourist season, winter-themed itineraries, such as Northern Lights tours to Murmansk, are very popular with Chinese tourists,” said Li Mengran, PR and media relations manager for the Chinese tourism company Zhongxin /Utour Group Co., Ltd., adding that back in 2012, Zhongxin became the official distributor of tickets for the Winter Olympics in Sochi, introducing the Chinese public to high-quality Russian resources for the development of winter tourism.

According to Li Mengran, this winter, Zhongxin developed themed Northern Lights-themed itineraries to Russia, which received a positive market response. Thanks to Russia's introduction of a visa-free regime for Chinese citizens, its competitiveness in the tourism market will continue to strengthen. It is expected to attract more Chinese tourists of all ages. Zhongxin will focus on developing special tourist routes and products dedicated to Northern Lights viewing and winter themes, she noted.

According to the Zhongguo Wenhuabao newspaper, in recent years, exciting winter travel has made Russia a new favorite destination for young Chinese tourists. In Murmansk, Petrozavodsk, Naryan-Mar, and other Russian cities, tourists can admire the brilliant aurora borealis, enjoy snowmobiling, whale watching in the Arctic Ocean, and encounter reindeer.

"Russia's introduction of a visa-free regime for Chinese citizens coincides with the peak of winter tourism. During the upcoming New Year and Spring Festival holidays (Chinese New Year, the traditional Chinese Lunar New Year), the popularity of tourist trips to Russia among Chinese is expected to reach a new high for the same period," noted Cheng Chaogong, a research fellow at the Tongcheng Institute of Tourism Research.

According to him, under the mutual visa exemption regime between China and Russia, a rapid increase in tourist flow from China to Russia, as well as from Russia to China, is expected through border crossings between the two countries, including the Heilongjiang Province checkpoint. Thanks to the visa-free regime, Chinese tourists will not only be able to experience winter-themed cultural and tourism products in the cities of Harbin and Mohe in Heilongjiang Province but also travel to Russia to admire its exotic landscapes, he emphasized. -0-

Jerusalem, December 3 (Xinhua) — The Rafah crossing, a key border crossing between Egypt and Gaza, will reopen in the coming days to allow civilians to leave the enclave, Israel announced in a statement on Wednesday.

The Office of the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Palestinian Territories, which regulates the flow of humanitarian aid into Gaza, said on Friday that the crossing would open "in the coming days exclusively for the exit of residents from the Gaza Strip to Egypt."

Residents who have received Israeli exit permits will cross into Egypt through the Rafah crossing in accordance with a mechanism agreed upon with Egypt and supervised by the European Union mission, similar to the procedure used in January 2025, the department said.

According to the agency, this step is being carried out “in accordance with the ceasefire agreement and the directive of the political leadership.” –0–

BEIJING, Dec. 3 (Xinhua) — A local document aimed at promoting compatibility and mutual recognition of standards across the Taiwan Strait was adopted by vote at a recent regular meeting of the Standing Committee of the People's Congress of Fujian Province, east China.

This was stated on Wednesday by Zhang Han, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council of the People's Republic of China, speaking at a regular departmental press conference.

The new provisions, according to Zhang Han, are aimed at stimulating cross-shore cooperation in the field of standardization.

This first-of-its-kind regulation on this issue was adopted on November 27 and will come into force on January 1, 2026, she added.

The regulations emphasize the principles of "compatibility" and "standardization," which promptly formalize the accumulated experience and innovative practices developed in Fujian Province in recent years into regulatory frameworks. The regulations encourage compatriots on both sides of the strait to cooperate in standardization through joint selection of topics, research and development, comparison, and application of standards in relevant sectors.

This is another innovative piece of legislation in the field of cross-strait relations at the local level, which is of great significance for both sides of the Taiwan Strait in terms of creating a common market, improving the well-being of residents and deepening integrated development. -0-

Beijing, December 3 (Xinhua) — Mainland China calls on Japan to reflect deeply on its historical culpability and retract its erroneous statements, State Council Taiwan Affairs Office spokesperson Zhang Han said on Wednesday.

"The Japanese side should stop interfering in China's internal affairs, strictly adhere to the one-China principle, and fulfill its political commitments to China through concrete actions," Zhang Han said, speaking at a regular departmental press conference.

Zhang Han emphasized that Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's erroneous remarks regarding Taiwan constitute interference in China's internal affairs, sending a false signal to separatist forces seeking "Taiwan independence," and undermining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait region.

Noting that this year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the liberation of Taiwan from Japanese occupation and the return of the island to China, as well as the 82nd anniversary of the issuance of the Cairo Declaration, Zhang Han said that a number of international legal documents, including the Cairo Declaration, have clearly affirmed China's sovereignty over Taiwan from the perspective of international law.

“Compliance with relevant regulations is an obligation under international law that Japan must assume,” she added.

"Taiwan is Chinese Taiwan. Taiwan has never been a state and never will be," she emphasized. "All compatriots on both sides of the Strait belong to the Chinese nation and are all Chinese. Taiwan's future can only be decided jointly by the more than 1.4 billion Chinese people, including Taiwan compatriots," Zhang Han concluded. -0-

CARACAS, Dec. 3 (Xinhua) — Colombia's Foreign Ministry on Tuesday expressed deep concern over U.S. President Donald Trump's recent remarks about possible military action against Colombia under the pretext of fighting drug trafficking.

In its statement, the department reiterated Colombia's strong rejection of any external threats of aggression that undermine the dignity, territorial integrity and national sovereignty of the Colombian people.

The statement said Colombia remains committed to combating drug trafficking in a comprehensive, balanced, multidisciplinary and evidence-based manner, while respecting human rights and fundamental freedoms, in accordance with the principle of shared responsibility.

The statement also calls for unity and solidarity among Latin American and Caribbean countries so that the region can unite against any external intervention aimed at undermining sovereignty.

Earlier on Tuesday, Trump told reporters at the White House that any country smuggling drugs into the United States could be attacked, after raising concerns about cocaine from Colombia.

Since early September, the US has carried out at least 21 strikes on suspected narco-ships in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific, including Colombian vessels, killing more than 83 people. –0–
