Kyiv, January 15 (Xinhua) — Ukraine's Verkhovna Rada (VRU) appointed Mykhailo Fedorov as defense minister on Wednesday, parliamentarian Yaroslav Zheleznyak announced on his Telegram channel.

According to him, the corresponding decision was supported by 277 deputies, with the required minimum being 226 votes.

Speaking in the Verkhovna Rada before the vote on his appointment, 34-year-old M. Fedorov noted that his first order of business as Defense Minister would be to conduct a financial audit of the agency.

A day earlier, the Ukrainian parliament accepted the resignation of the previous Minister of Defense, Denys Shmyhal, and dismissed Mykola Fedorov from his post as First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Transformation, at his own request.

On Wednesday, the Verkhovna Rada also appointed Dmytro Shmyhal as Ukraine's First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy. 248 deputies voted in favor of this decision.

The position of Minister of Energy has remained vacant since November of last year. –0–

WASHINGTON, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) — The U.S. State Department announced Wednesday that it is suspending immigrant visas for citizens of 75 countries.

This measure will apply to "countries whose migrants receive unacceptable amounts of benefits from the American people. The freeze will remain in place until the United States can ensure that new migrants do not profit at the expense of the American people," the department wrote on social media.

The measure affects countries such as Somalia, Haiti, Iran and Eritrea, “whose migrants often become a burden to the United States upon arrival,” the State Department said.

According to Fox News, the State Department announced earlier Wednesday that it would suspend visa processing for citizens of 75 countries, including Somalia, Russia, Afghanistan, Brazil, Iran, Iraq, Egypt, Nigeria, Thailand, and Yemen.

The suspension will begin on January 21 and will last until the State Department reassesses its visa processing procedures, the statement said.

The decision comes after the White House announced Tuesday it would revoke Temporary Protected Status for Somali migrants amid fraud allegations in Minnesota.

On Monday, the State Department announced on social media that more than 100,000 visas have been revoked since Donald Trump took office as President nearly a year ago.

In November 2025, Donald Trump announced his intention to halt migration from what he called "Third World" countries. The announcement followed the death of a National Guard soldier shot and killed near the White House by an Afghan citizen.

CHENGDU, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) — China's domestically developed FP-985 Taurus large unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) completed a long-distance logistics flight over the highlands between southwest China's Sichuan Province and Xizang Autonomous Region on Wednesday.

Loaded with local delicacies including butter tea and yak milk products, the UAV traveled more than 1,100 km from Linzhi City (Nyingchi) in southwest Xizang Autonomous Region to Beichuan Qiang Autonomous County in Sichuan Province, marking the success of the country's first large-scale UAV logistics validation flight in high-altitude conditions.

Developed by Aerospace Times Feipeng Co., Ltd., the drone is designed to operate in challenging environments such as high mountains, islands, and other geographically complex regions. It has a maximum takeoff weight of 5.7 tons and a payload capacity of over 2 tons.

It is capable of long-haul cargo operations in extreme conditions—from cold high plateaus to salt-fog-affected island regions. It also supports short takeoff and landing (STOL) at standard airfields and offers flexible operation on poorly equipped runways.

The company stated that the device is capable of 24/7 operation in all weather conditions, featuring anti-icing/de-icing features, lightning protection, and high resistance to strong winds.

“We modified the piston engine so that the drone could operate at an altitude of 4,000 meters above sea level as effectively as on flat land,” said Wei Yachuan, the UAV’s chief designer, adding that the successful maiden flight laid a solid technical foundation for establishing a low-altitude logistics network in more challenging geographic conditions.

Traditional land transportation in the Sichuan-Xizang region is limited by rugged terrain, complex geology, and variable climate. A new air logistics route has reduced cargo transportation time between Mianyang and Linzhi from over 40 hours by land to less than six hours.

This air route also creates an economic bridge between the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau and the Sichuan Basin.

The corridor is designed to facilitate trade flows: highland delicacies such as yak meat and medicinal herbs can be quickly distributed through Beichuan County to markets across China, while manufactured goods, daily necessities, and emergency supplies from Sichuan can be efficiently transported to Xizang.

This will significantly enhance the commercialization and value of specialty agricultural products along the Sichuan-Xizang corridor, directly contributing to income growth and industrial upgrading in the regions. -0-

HAIKOU, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) — South China's Hainan Province has recorded a record trading volume of 14.727 billion kWh of green electricity and green certificates in 2025, the provincial electricity trading center said Wednesday.

This figure was 9.9 times higher than the 2024 level of 1.488 billion kWh, which gave a powerful impetus to the green and low-carbon development of the Hainan Free Trade Port, the center noted.

In total, the volume of green electricity trade in Hainan Province in 2025 is equivalent to a reduction in standard coal equivalent consumption of approximately 5.89 million tons and a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions of approximately 14.68 million tons.

"Green" electricity is electricity produced with near-zero carbon dioxide emissions. It is primarily generated by solar, wind, or other renewable energy sources. "Green" certificates are the only proof of consumption of electricity generated by renewable energy sources, each equivalent to 1,000 kWh of "green" electricity.

Hainan Province, rich in wind and solar resources, is rapidly transforming into an island of clean energy and is improving its green electricity trading mechanism.

Beijing, January 15 (Xinhua) — From January 1 to 9, 2026, more than 91,000 incoming and outgoing tourists passed through all Heilongjiang Province checkpoints, a 43.8 percent increase compared to the same period last year, the China Media Group (CMG) reported, citing data from the provincial border control agency.

Harbin, a key destination for ice tourism, recently launched four new international flights to Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Bangkok, and Kuala Lumpur, increasing the number of passenger flights from 87 to 118 per week. Many foreign tourists come to Harbin specifically to see the ice town and enjoy winter activities.

The 42nd Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival officially opened at the Great World of Ice and Snow Park in Heilongjiang, capital of Northeast China, on Monday, January 5.

The festival, held under the motto "Icy Sky and Snowy Land – Creating the Future Together," features ten premium themed winter tourism routes and more than 200 events covering topics such as ice and snow culture, sports and physical education, and business cooperation.

A key driver of growth has been the simplification of visa procedures. The gradual introduction of measures such as 240-hour visa-free transit, visa-free travel for Russian citizens, and online entry card processing for foreigners, combined with Heilongjiang's unique ice and snow tourism resources, has attracted large numbers of foreigners to travel and shop in China.

The average daily passenger traffic at Heihe River Port is approximately 4,000, reaching over 27,000 over the past week. Thanks to the bilateral visa-free regime between China and Russia, over 19,000 people passed through Suifenhe Port from January 1 to 9, a 50 percent increase year-on-year.

Faced with continuous peak passenger traffic, local border control agencies are quickly adjusting screening channels, adding emergency channels and service points for the convenience of citizens. Along with improving customs clearance efficiency, checkpoint security has been strengthened to ensure the safe, orderly, efficient, and unhindered movement of Chinese and foreign passengers.
