JIUQUAN, January 19 (Xinhua) — The return capsule of the Shenzhou-20 spacecraft landed at the Dongfeng landing site in northern China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region at 9:34 a.m. Beijing time on Monday, the China Manned Space Administration (CMSA) said.

Based on on-site inspection, the exterior of the Shenzhou-20 return capsule is generally intact and the items inside are in good condition, the CMSA reported, noting that the Shenzhou-20 return mission was completed successfully.

The Shenzhou-23 spacecraft, which will take over the backup mission, has arrived at the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center, CMSA added.

On April 24, 2025, China launched the Shenzhou-20 manned spacecraft, sending three astronauts to the space station to carry out tasks as part of another six-month mission.

However, the Shenzhou-20 spacecraft, which was originally scheduled to return the three astronauts to Earth on November 5, did not meet the requirements for their safe return and remained in orbit to conduct further relevant experiments.

Fine cracks were found in the glass of the observation window of the Shenzhou-20 spacecraft's reentry module, which were most likely caused by an external impact from space debris, the CMSA reported. -0-

Budapest, January 19 (Xinhua) — Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said Sunday he has accepted US President Donald Trump's invitation to join the founding members of the Gaza Peace Council.

On his Facebook page, he wrote that the invitation was sent in recognition of “Hungary’s efforts to achieve peace,” and confirmed that Hungary had accepted the “honorable invitation.”

He also shared an invitation letter from the White House dated January 16, in which D. Trump officially invited Hungary to participate in the council's work.

According to previous reports, the Gaza Peace Council is part of a broader US-led initiative aimed at demilitarizing Hamas, establishing technocratic governance and post-conflict reconstruction in the Strip.

On Friday, the White House announced the names of the members of the council, which Donald Trump will chair. The members include US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Trump's special envoy Steven Witkoff, Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner, and former British Prime Minister Tony Blair.

However, neither Israel nor Palestine are satisfied with the composition of the US-led council. On Saturday, the Israeli Prime Minister's Office stated that the US announcement of the council's composition "was not coordinated with Israel and is contrary to its policies." The Palestinian Islamic Jihad movement also criticized the council's composition, claiming that it serves Israeli interests and demonstrates "negative intentions regarding the implementation of the [ceasefire] agreement." –0–

Baghdad, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) — Iraq announced on Sunday the complete withdrawal of international coalition advisers from all military bases and command centers in areas controlled by the Iraqi federal government.

The Supreme Military Commission tasked with completing the international coalition's mission said in a statement that several remaining advisers had left Iraq's Ain al-Asad airbase and the Joint Operations Command headquarters, handing over these strategic facilities to the full control of Iraqi security forces.

The first phase of the international coalition's military mission to combat the Islamic State (IS) in Iraq's federal territories has been completed, and Iraq has now transitioned to bilateral security relations with the United States, the statement said.

These relations will be aimed at activating memoranda of understanding in the area of military cooperation and developing the capabilities of the Iraqi armed forces in the areas of equipment, armament, training, exercises, maneuvers and joint operations to ensure continuous readiness to fight ISIS, the statement said.

It notes that the second phase of the international coalition's mission to combat ISIS in Syria has begun, and coordination with the coalition will continue in order to completely defeat ISIS in Syria.

On Saturday, the Iraqi Defense Ministry said the Iraqi army had taken full control of the country's second-largest military airbase, Ain al-Asad, in the western province of Anbar following the withdrawal of American troops.

SANTIAGO, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) — Chilean President Gabriel Boric said Sunday the death toll from wildfires engulfing the country's south-central region has reached 18 and is expected to rise.

“As of today, we have confirmed information about 18 deaths, but unfortunately, we are sure that this number will grow,” G. Boric told reporters in Concepción in the Bío-Bío region, about 500 kilometers south of Santiago.

He noted that preliminary estimates indicated that around 300 houses had been destroyed in Bio-Bio alone, warning that the final number could exceed 1,000.

Authorities imposed a curfew on Saturday evening in the municipalities of Penco, Nacimiento and Laja, while in Lirquen, one of the hardest-hit areas, a curfew was imposed earlier and remains in effect indefinitely after fires engulfed about 80 percent of the city.

According to the National Forestry Corporation, 14 forest fires are currently burning in Chile, with red alerts issued for them, and the burned area nationwide exceeds 24,000 hectares. The largest fire is in Concepción, covering over 10,600 hectares.

Boric has declared a state of emergency in the regions of Nuble and Bio-bio. –0–
