BEIJING, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) — The country's civil aviation sector is expected to see a record 95 million passenger trips during the upcoming "chunyun" (Chinese New Year) holiday, the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) said.

During the 40-day travel rush that begins on February 2 and runs until March 13, the average daily passenger traffic in civil aviation is expected to reach 2.38 million, Wang Weijun, deputy director of the CAAC's Department of Transportation, said at a press conference on Monday.

According to him, during this period, the civil aviation sector plans to operate an average of 19,400 flights per day, which will be 5 percent more than in the same period last year.

Wang Weijun attributed the sharp increase in air travel to factors such as the integrated development of aviation and tourism, the extended Spring Festival holiday, and the simplification of cross-border travel. Popular tourist routes include northern ice and snow holidays, warm southern resorts, and international outbound and inbound travel.

The official noted that to meet the growing demand for air travel, the CAAC will take targeted measures to manage flight safety, increase flight capacity, and improve the quality of passenger service.

The civil aviation system will make every effort to ensure safe, convenient and comfortable flights for passengers, and maintain smooth and efficient air cargo transportation channels during the Chunyun period, Wang Weijun added. -0-

In an exclusive interview with Xinhua News Agency in Geneva recently, World Economic Forum (WEF) President Borge Brende stated that China remains the largest contributor to global economic growth.

Brende noted that China continues to strengthen its position in traditionally strong industries while actively exploring new technologies. The World Economic Forum predicts that China's economic growth will exceed 5% this year.

According to Brende, China is experiencing accelerated growth in advanced technologies and is simultaneously increasing investment in research, development, and innovation for new technological solutions. "These new technologies are expected to drive enormous productivity gains and new development opportunities in the coming years," Brende said, adding that China is a key driver of this process.

Speaking about the challenges facing the global economy, Brende noted that, despite the complex geopolitical environment and the abuse of tariffs by certain countries, the global economy continues to demonstrate a certain degree of resilience. He believes that trade, which previously served as the engine of growth, remains an important factor, while new technologies such as artificial intelligence are attracting significant investment and contributing to global economic growth.

Brende said, "The biggest concern today is that escalating geopolitical tensions could stifle global economic growth." He believes that if the world manages to avoid further geopolitical tensions, global economic growth in 2026 could remain at 3% or higher.

The World Economic Forum's recently published Global Cooperation Barometer report notes that multilateralism continues to face strong headwinds, and the structure and format of global cooperation is undergoing change.

Brende praised China's role in supporting multilateralism. He emphasized the continued need to rely on multilateral mechanisms, such as the UN, to address global challenges such as pandemics and cybercrime.

Brende believes that it is crucial to maintain and develop existing mechanisms of multilateralism, as they are what have brought the world enormous prosperity since the end of World War II.

The 2026 Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum is taking place from January 19 to 23 in Davos, Switzerland, under the theme "The Spirit of Dialogue." Some 3,000 representatives from more than 130 countries and regions are discussing issues such as strengthening cooperation, unleashing new drivers of growth, and investing in human capital.

Brende stated that in a world where disunity and competition are growing, maintaining dialogue is crucial, as it becomes the starting point for constructive processes and contributes to global progress. "From the perspective of the World Economic Forum, dialogue is not a luxury, but a necessity," he emphasized.
