Washington, January 24 (Xinhua) — The U.S. military on Friday struck a ship suspected of carrying drugs in the Eastern Pacific Ocean. This is the first known strike of its kind since the U.S. attack on Venezuela on January 3.

As a result, two people died, and one survived, the US Southern Command reported on the social media site X.

"Intelligence confirmed that the vessel was following known drug trafficking routes in the eastern Pacific Ocean and was transporting drugs," the command said.

Since September last year, the Pentagon has sunk more than 30 suspected drug ships in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific, killing more than 110 people. –0–

Recently, the US has continued to escalate its “island grab” efforts and has even threatened to impose tariffs on European allies to force them to abandon their opposition to Washington over Greenland.

On January 17, the US officially announced its decision to impose tariffs on its European allies until an agreement on the purchase of Greenland is reached. This move further exacerbates already tense relations between the US and Europe.

File photo: D. Trump

In fact, the United States has long had a claim on Greenland. Even during his first term as president, Donald Trump publicly floated the idea of purchasing Greenland. Since the beginning of this year, frequent statements from the White House have only fueled interest in this topic. Previously, Donald Trump not only declared that "we absolutely need Greenland," but the White House even contemplated the use of military force. Now, with the introduction of tariff measures, the intention to advance the "island takeover" through economic pressure has become clear.

The imposition of tariffs to secure a Greenland deal has angered Europe, which says: "Blackmail is unacceptable."

On January 17, US President Donald Trump announced on social media that, due to the situation surrounding Greenland, the United States would impose a 10% tariff on all goods imported from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland, effective February 1. He also stated that the tariff rate would increase to 25% beginning in early June and would remain in effect until a deal for the United States to purchase Greenland is reached.

The threat had barely been made when the eight countries in question quickly reacted, sharply condemning Washington's actions.

A joint statement issued on January 18 by the UK, Denmark and Finland, eight countries in total, warned: "Tariffs will undermine the transatlantic relationship and risk a dangerous downward spiral."

Moreover, many European leaders, with rare unanimity, spoke publicly, expressing a categorical position regarding D. Trump’s threats.

French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the threat: "Threats of tariffs are unacceptable and have no place in this context. Europeans will respond in a united and coordinated manner if these threats are confirmed. We will ensure the protection of European sovereignty."

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the decision "absolutely wrong" and said he planned to discuss the issue with Donald Trump "as soon as possible."

German Vice Chancellor and Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil stated that Germany must under no circumstances succumb to blackmail, and European countries must give a clear response.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stated, "Europe cannot be blackmailed." Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen said Trump's ultimatum threatens the "world order" and the future of the NATO military alliance.

It is noteworthy that criticism was not only voiced by the eight countries that were threatened.

Ireland and Croatia issued their own condemnation, and even Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, considered one of Trump's close allies in Europe, publicly spoke out against it, saying that "introducing new sanctions would be a mistake" and that she had conveyed her position to the American leader.

Europe is no longer prepared to endure in silence.

There is a possibility of using a "trade bazooka"

In response to the threats, Europe is not limiting itself to verbal condemnations but is also taking concrete action. According to foreign media reports, the EU has already begun urgently coordinating countermeasures in response to the US threats.

Following the January 18 meeting, diplomats from several EU countries reported that the EU is considering imposing tariffs on €93 billion worth of US goods or restricting market access for US companies. These measures would be a response to US threats.

These retaliatory tariffs would reinstate measures suspended by the EU after the signing of the trade agreement with the US in July 2025. Compared to some other options under discussion, this measure could be implemented "very quickly."

Several officials have said an alternative could be to use the EU's Anti-Coercion Instrument (ACI), the so-called "trade bazooka" designed to punish countries that use the market for geopolitical blackmail.

According to Reuters, the anti-coercion instrument could restrict US participation in government procurement, investment, or banking, or limit trade in services.

Regarding the attitude towards the two options within the EU, according to the source, the tariff option as an initial retaliatory measure currently appears to be gaining wider support, while the adoption of anti-coercive measures is “ambiguous”.

A major rift in transatlantic relations

"A Dangerous Downward Spiral"

Currently, US threats have already provoked a response at the alliance level. The tariff crisis, triggered by the escalation of US "island-grabbing" efforts, has become a test of the strength and resilience of the transatlantic partnership.

On the 17th, European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen warned that US threats to impose tariffs on several European countries over Greenland could undermine transatlantic relations and create the risk of a "dangerous downward spiral." This warning elevates the economic conflict to the level of alliance security and trust.

The British newspaper "Financial Times" notes that Donald Trump's tough statements on the Greenland issue have exposed the most serious differences between NATO allies since the founding of the alliance and have provoked an angry reaction from European leaders and business leaders, who had previously shown relative restraint due to fears of losing US support regarding Ukraine.

Regarding next steps, diplomatic and coordination channels remain open. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte stated that he had already held discussions with Donald Trump on the "security situation in Greenland and the Arctic region" and hoped to return to the issue again this week.

A. Costa, in turn, announced that, given the importance of the developments and in order to further strengthen coordination, an extraordinary meeting of the European Council will be convened in the coming days to coordinate further actions.

A. Costa emphasized that, based on the results of a joint assessment conducted by the EU and its Member States, the imposition of US tariffs against the EU is incompatible with the EU-US trade agreement. The EU will remain united and committed to the fundamental principles of international law protecting territorial integrity and sovereignty, and will jointly and firmly support Denmark and Greenland.

Baku, January 24 /Xinhua/ — "Two years ago, there were only bare hills here, and the wind blew dust in all directions," recalls 47-year-old engineer Sarvan Gahramanov from the Chinese company PowerChina Huadong Engineering Corporation Limited (HDEC). Standing at a substation at a new wind farm in eastern Azerbaijan, he gazes at the ridgeline where snow-white wind turbines now stand majestically.

S. Gahramanov is one of the local engineers who participated in the entire construction of the 240 MW Khizi-Absheron wind farm. At the official opening ceremony of the plant in January 2026, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev noted that it will strengthen the country's energy potential and contribute to its overall development.

PULSE OF WIND ON MOUNTAIN RIDS

Approximately 37 hectares of land were allocated for the station's construction: 14.2 hectares in the Absheron district and 22.6 hectares in the Khizi district. This land accommodates 37 wind turbines, each with a capacity of 6.5 MW. These hills northwest of Baku seem naturally suited for wind power: the average annual wind speed here exceeds 9 m/s.

"I feel pride and satisfaction in the work I've accomplished. Seeing a project evolve step by step from drawings and calculations into a real, functioning facility is a powerful motivator and a source of inner satisfaction," says S. Gakhramanov. "Every stage of the work directly impacts the safety, reliability, and longevity of the facility. Knowing that your decisions and actions have a long-term impact keeps you on your professional toes."

According to HDEC, construction of the plant began in March 2024, and it is expected to be operational by the end of December 2025. The project, which is the largest wind energy facility in Azerbaijan, will generate approximately 1 billion kWh of electricity annually, providing electricity to over 300,000 households.

"I'm proud to be part of this project. For me, this is the pinnacle of my professional career," notes electrical engineer Adil Gasanov, who worked on the site for almost a year. "China has cutting-edge technologies and powerful engineering potential in green energy. Collaborating with them is a huge benefit both for our country as a whole and for us, local engineers."

A TRANSCONTINENTAL LOGISTICS FEAT

Each turbine is equipped with a 100-meter-tall tower and 84-meter-long blades. To deliver these gigantic structures on time, the project team developed a combined logistics plan, combining land and sea routes.

"This was a true test of endurance for our team. We had to contend with roads washed out by floodwaters, mountain passes covered in snow, and desert winds that threatened the stability of the transport platforms," says HDEC Project Manager Zhou Lu. "Nevertheless, we ensured the safe delivery of every component and successfully completed the task." The overland route passed through the Khorgos border crossing in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in northwest China, crossing Central Asia. The maritime route began in the port of Yangzhou in Jiangsu Province in eastern China: the cargo was delivered by sea to Turkey, and from there, it was transported overland through Georgia directly to the project site.

"I deeply respect my Chinese colleagues. They have become a true example of hard work and strict discipline for all our local engineers. We have learned a lot from them. Their experience and professionalism are truly admirable: thanks to them, we understand how to remain resilient and successfully overcome the most difficult challenges," says A. Gasanov.

ENERGY OF A COMMON FUTURE

According to HDEC Community Engagement Representative Vusal Safarov, over 200 jobs were created for local residents during construction. Furthermore, the mountain infrastructure built for transporting equipment significantly facilitated the delivery of food and essential goods to remote communities.

"The Chinese company also implemented a number of social projects. Specifically, it donated school backpacks to first-graders and provided essential items to residents of nearby villages. Local communities have repeatedly expressed their gratitude and appreciation to the company," says V. Safarov.

Azerbaijan has set a goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 35 percent by 2030 compared to 1990 levels. The project, in which ACWA Power is an investor, will save approximately 220 million cubic meters of natural gas annually and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 400,000 tons.

ACWA Power Project Director Ibrahim Adar believes that Chinese companies demonstrated a high level of professionalism, technical capabilities, and execution efficiency at all stages, and their growing experience in implementing international renewable energy projects is clearly reflected in the high quality of construction at the Khizi-Absheron Wind Farm.

“ACWA Power views China as an important strategic partner in the global energy transition,” said I. Adar, adding that the company hopes to expand cooperation with Chinese companies in future renewable energy and green hydrogen projects. –0–

As the Spring Festival (Chinese New Year) approaches, the film market heats up. Audience interest in a particular film is no longer limited to watching it on the big screen—more and more people, even before seeing the film, are already heading to the filming locations to check in and buy film-related merchandise.

Today's film industry is seriously transforming our way of life. So what seemingly subtle changes have occurred between you and cinema, based on big data analysis over the past year?

During the interview, the reporter noticed something new: some moviegoers were entering the cinema already holding a figurine of a character from the film.

Customer: "I'm filled with anticipation holding this surprise box, and I can't wait to see the movie itself. I think this will help me have a more immersive experience. I've bought branded merchandise before movies before."

It's not uncommon for film merchandise to sell out quickly a month before its release. What was the film distribution situation like at the start of last Chinese New Year? Fast forward to a time when the market exploded after the release of "Nezha 2." Official surprise boxes went on sale online almost immediately after the premiere and, despite this, sold out in a flash. In social media discussions, many users complained that, having barely managed to pre-order one, they found that the delivery date had been pushed back by six months.

The reporter then compared the release dates of merchandise for several popular animated films this year with their premiere dates and found that the consumption timeline generally shifted forward, leading up to the film's release.

Movie-themed merchandise no longer waits for theatrical releases. Even with weeks or even months remaining before the release of some highly-hyped films, recognizable plush toys and keychains are already appearing in stores and shopping malls. Moviegoers can purchase souvenirs featuring the film's characters even before entering the theater.

Lan Jinsong, Deputy Director of the Center for Cross-Border Communication Research in Intellectual Property (IP) at the Communication University of China (Beijing): Whether it's everyday items, cultural creations, or other small derivative products, it's important to start thinking about market entry immediately, from the moment the product's image is designed. Planning should begin well in advance, six months or even a year in advance.

As the timeline of consumption continually shifts forward, so too does the space it occupies. Even before the opening of this year's Chinese New Year film season, big data analysis in the tourism industry revealed that after the release dates of films like Pegasus 3 and Blade of the Guardians were confirmed, the popularity of destinations associated with the filming locations of these films increased significantly in anticipation of their release.

Data show that as of mid-January 2026, hotel bookings in Bayangol Mongol Autonomous Prefecture of Xinjiang (Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, PRC), where the movie "Pegasus 3" was filmed, i.e., during the Spring Festival holiday, increased by 147% year-on-year, and search queries related to tourism products such as "desert tours" and "desert highway" increased by 60%.

Shi Ke, a researcher at the Qunar Big Data Research Institute, a tourism platform, said: "The impact of films on tourism is shifting from the desire to check in after a film's release to the pre-release interest in recommending these destinations. This is a new phenomenon that emerged this year in the lead-up to the Spring Festival. Expectations based on the plot and visuals are driving viewers to plan their travel itineraries in advance."

Why are people willing to spend money on consumption related to a film they haven't seen yet, and plan their actions in advance?

Lan Jinsong: Today, audiences, the market, producers, and consumers all have absolute confidence in the future of Chinese cinema. Culture acts as a driver that sets the entire industrial chain in motion, forming a unified cultural ecosystem.

Films not only encourage repeated cinema visits but also encourage a variety of consumer choices through the launch of various campaigns. These market changes reflect the Chinese film market's transition to a more stable, mature, and high-quality development.

"Scene Two", following the end of the film's theatrical release

If a film encourages pre-release consumption of its associated merchandise, won't its popularity fade immediately after its theatrical run? Big data analysis has revealed that an increasing number of viewers, after leaving the theater, continue to "follow in the film's wake." Where do they go?

While analyzing big data on online posts and reposts related to the film after its Chinese New Year release, a reporter examined the timeline of audience reactions. Initially, immediately after the premiere screenings, there was a lively discussion: viewers left short comments on social media, discussing the plot. Then the phenomenon of "N-rolling" emerged—that is, multiple viewings—where people rewatched the film, transferring its mood into their everyday lives. Some time after the film's release, more and more viewers were sharing not only photos of tickets or posters, but also animated sketches, character sketches, and photographs of informative exhibition stands. Where did they get this "extended" content, not available in theaters? While following the reposts, the reporter unexpectedly came across the China National Film Museum.

Liu Jun, Deputy Director of the National Film Museum of China, said: We've placed sketches and cultural artifacts from classic animated films like Sun Wukong and Nezha Conquers the Sea Dragon, which were previously housed at the Shanghai Scientific and Animation Film Studio and are now part of our collection, directly opposite the IMAX theater. Drawing on the inspiration that comes from watching films, we offer viewers the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of China's magnificent and rich cultural heritage through film.

Curator Liu told a reporter that the unexpected popularity of these intimate thematic exhibitions accompanying film premieres has changed the museum's approach to curating—it's now not simply about telling the history of cinema, but also about using cinema as a "portal" to delve into the essence of traditional Chinese culture.

In 2025, during the theatrical release of several popular films, bookings for related cultural exhibitions increased significantly. For example, following the release of the animated film Little Demons Journey to the West, the Animating China exhibition in Beijing showcased over 100 original sketches of classic characters from the Shanghai Animation Studio, and the number of related social media views exceeded 6 million. In Hangzhou, a cultural space converted from a former film factory and combining film screenings, digital cultural heritage exhibitions, and cultural fairs increased its revenue by 26.4% year-on-year in 2025. Thus, cinema continues to energize more and more cultural spaces.

SANYA, January 23 (Xinhua) — Chinese rescue teams have pulled 17 Filipino crew members from the waters of a ship that sank in the South China Sea, Chinese government agencies announced on Friday.

As of Friday evening, fifteen of the rescued people were in stable condition, two were found dead, and four remained missing.

At 12:46 a.m. Friday local time, the search and rescue unit in Sansha City, Hainan Province, southern China, received a notification from the Hainan Provincial Maritime Search and Rescue Center. The message stated that the Singapore-registered bulk carrier DEVON BAY, en route from the Philippines to Guangdong Province in southern China, had lost contact with shore authorities in waters approximately 55 nautical miles northwest of China's Huangyan Island. There were 21 Filipino crew members on board the ship.

According to the center, contact with the vessel was last established at 9:26 PM on January 22, when a severe listing of the bulk carrier's hull and water taking on board was reported, after which contact was lost. The vessel's emergency position-indicating radio beacon had already issued an alarm.

After receiving the notification, the search and rescue unit of Sansha City launched a multilateral international maritime rescue operation.

The PLA Southern Command immediately dispatched a military aircraft to conduct search and rescue operations over the waters where the disaster occurred. Two nearby China Coast Guard vessels, as well as teams from the South China Sea Rescue Bureau of the Ministry of Transport of the People's Republic of China, also joined the rescue operation.

Numerous international commercial vessels, including ships flying the flags of Liberia, Panama and Japan, also took part in the search operation.

At 4:28 a.m. Friday, China Coast Guard vessels located and rescued four crew members in a lifeboat. Difficult sea conditions, including strong winds and rough seas, posed significant challenges to the rescue operation. Chinese authorities, however, confirmed that search and rescue efforts were ongoing.

The 15 Filipino sailors, who were found in stable condition, have received medical treatment and are being cared for on board the Chinese vessel, according to the China Coast Guard.

Davos, Switzerland, January 23 (Xinhua) — The World Economic Forum (WEF) 2026 Annual Meeting concluded in Davos on Friday. Participants unanimously noted that a rapidly changing world requires greater dialogue and closer cooperation in the face of global challenges.

At the session's closing panel discussion, World Trade Organization (WTO) Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala said the trade sector had experienced "the most severe shock in 80 years," noting that global trade rules had weakened.

The world cannot return to the status quo, she said, and both public and private sector resilience needs to be strengthened to adapt to future uncertainty.

Speaking about managing risks associated with artificial intelligence (AI), N. Okonjo-Iweala emphasized the need for global cooperation.

“There are certain problems that we simply cannot solve alone,” she said, adding that “no single country or even region can be responsible for regulating AI or setting limits on it.”

European Central Bank (ECB) President Christine Lagarde stated, "We must be attentive to the distribution of wealth. We must be careful about inequality, which is becoming deeper and more widespread," adding, "If we don't pay due attention to this, we could face serious problems."

Noting that the level of trust has declined to a certain extent, K. Lagarde called for it to be restored through dialogue.

Saudi Arabia's Finance Minister Mohammed bin Abdullah Al-Jadaan also stressed the need for greater dialogue and cooperation, calling for support from institutions such as the WEF, the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.

In his closing remarks, WEF President Børge Brende noted that dialogue is key to moving the world forward, emphasizing that strengthening markets, promoting connectivity, resolving conflicts, and achieving inclusive growth depend on the ability of decision-makers to engage in dialogue with each other. –0–
