In the first two weeks of 2026, Chinese diplomacy at home and the Foreign Minister's visits abroad spanned Northeast Asia, South Asia, Europe, North America, and Africa. Chinese diplomacy is opening the new year with unprecedented breadth and depth.

Surrounding regions are a priority in China's diplomatic strategy. Since the beginning of the new year, intensified high-level interactions between China and Pakistan, as well as China and the Republic of Korea, have set the tone for diplomacy with neighboring countries, aimed at promoting stability, strengthening mutual trust, and advancing cooperation.

On January 3, a Pakistani delegation arrived in China to participate in the Seventh Round of the Strategic Dialogue between the Chinese and Pakistani Foreign Ministers, which also marked the beginning of celebrations for the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. The all-round strategic cooperation and partnership between China and Pakistan has become an important stabilizing factor in the regional and international situation.

On January 4, South Korean President Lee Jae-myung visited China. The two sides signed 15 cooperation documents, jointly opposed protectionism, and called for joint efforts to protect the achievements of Victory in World War II. This not only marked a new starting point for the development of relations between the two countries but also made a positive contribution to peace and stability in Northeast Asia.

Chinese diplomacy not only attaches great importance to relations with neighboring countries, but also strengthens and expands the global “circle of friends”.

On January 4, Irish Prime Minister Martin visited China. During the visit, the focus was on coordinating development strategies in emerging areas such as artificial intelligence, the digital economy, medicine, and healthcare. Ireland, as an important EU member and the country holding the EU Presidency in the second half of 2026, has clearly stated its willingness to play a constructive role in promoting the healthy development of China-EU relations.

Meanwhile, on January 14, Canadian Prime Minister Michael Carney visited China. The warming of Sino-Canadian relations reflects the international community's widespread recognition of China's market openness and the benefits of its stable development.

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Africa. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi visited Ethiopia, Tanzania, and Lesotho. Lesotho, one of the countries most affected by high US tariffs, enjoys a zero-tariff regime in China. This is a clear example of China's strong commitment to mutual support and assistance to a wide range of developing countries.

2026 marks the first year of the 15th Five-Year Plan. Recently, a number of leading international media outlets have made positive forecasts regarding China's economic prospects. As China introduces more stimulus measures to expand domestic demand and continues to accelerate its high-level opening up to the outside world, the Chinese economy is expected to maintain stable and sustainable growth. It is precisely this high social stability and predictability of economic development that provide the confidence on which Chinese diplomacy rests.

In a complex international environment, Chinese diplomacy, with its strategic resilience, entrepreneurship, and flexible approaches, serves as a reliable support for the future development of the world.

BEIJING, January 25 (Xinhua) — The Central Military Commission (CMC) has issued regulations on elections for Communist Party of China (CPC) organizations in the armed forces, which will take effect on February 1, 2026, the CMC said in a statement on Sunday.

The statement noted that the regulations summarize the practical experience of conducting internal Party elections in the military since the 18th National Congress of the CPC and comprehensively standardize the work related to the election of delegates to Party congresses and the composition of Party organizations at various levels in the armed forces.

The new rules are expected to improve the system of intra-party elections in the military, strengthen the implementation of party democratic centralism, and enhance the leadership and organizational capacity and effectiveness of party organizations.

The Central Military Commission's statement emphasized that the adopted regulations are of great significance for strengthening Party leadership and Party building in the armed forces, as well as for providing solid organizational guarantees for achieving the goals set for the 100th anniversary of the founding of the People's Liberation Army of China. –0–

ROME, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) — Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and her Norwegian counterpart Jonas Gahr Store criticized U.S. President Donald Trump's claims that non-American troops within the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) have stayed away from the front lines in Afghanistan.

In her statement on Saturday, J. Meloni recalled that after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, NATO invoked Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty for the first and only time in its history in solidarity with the United States.

“Italy responded immediately, along with its allies, by deploying thousands of troops and assuming full responsibility for Regional Command West, one of the most significant operational areas of the entire international mission,” the statement emphasized.

According to J. Meloni, Italy has paid an “undeniable price”: over almost 20 years, 53 military personnel have died and more than 700 have been wounded during combat operations, security missions and training programs for Afghan forces.

As the statement notes, for this reason, comments that downplay the contribution of NATO member states in Afghanistan are unacceptable, especially when they come from an ally.

J. G. Stere supported the position of the Italian Prime Minister, calling D. Trump’s words “disrespectful.”

"The fallen, their families, and those who served in Afghanistan deserve to be treated fairly and respectfully," J. G. Støre wrote on Facebook. "The statement made by the US President is disrespectful. I understand that both veterans and their families react strongly to it," the Norwegian Prime Minister said.

On January 22, D. Trump said in an interview with the Fox Business television channel that the United States never needed soldiers from other NATO countries during the war in Afghanistan, who, as he put it, “stayed a little behind the lines, a little behind the front lines.” –0–

LHASA, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) — Southwest China's Xijiang Autonomous Region welcomed over 70.73 million tourists in 2025, up 10.71 percent year on year, while the number of foreign tourists increased by 36.5 percent to 437,400.

This year also saw a significant expansion of Xizang's tourism products. Cultural output rose to 15.01 billion yuan (approximately $2.15 billion), an increase of 35.29 percent, while total tourism revenue reached 81.68 billion yuan, an increase of 9.51 percent.

This sustainable development is supported by ongoing efforts to preserve and utilize the region's cultural resources. During the fourth national cultural relics census, 3,346 cultural heritage sites were identified in Xizang, placing the region among the leaders in terms of new discoveries.

Since the launch of the regional tourism resource survey in 2023, over 31,000 new tourism resources have been catalogued in Xizang. Traditional folk events such as Guozhuang dance, Tibetan dance, and oxhide boat races are gaining popularity, attracting tourists seeking to experience local culture.

To preserve and promote their cultural heritage, including ancient architecture, cultural relics, and intangible cultural heritage, regional authorities actively use digital platforms. These platforms, some dedicated to iconic sites such as the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Potala Palace, have recorded over 2.5 million visits. -0-

SHANGHAI, January 25 (Xinhua) — The Michelin Group opened its first "factory of the future" in Shanghai on Friday. The total investment in the project amounted to 3 billion yuan (approximately 425 million U.S. dollars).

The new plant is equipped with advanced and flexible production systems designed to serve China's ever-expanding new energy vehicle (NEV) market.

The global tire giant first entered the Chinese market in the 1980s and has since witnessed the rapid growth of China's automotive sector and advances in NEV technology. Today, Michelin holds over 30% of the high-quality NEV tire market in China and supplies its products to many Chinese automakers.

Equipped with the latest Michelin equipment, the "factory of the future" can produce one tire every 36 seconds and handle both large and small orders of up to 100 tires. Approximately 70 percent of the company's output will be NEVs, and the order-to-delivery cycle will be reduced from 10 days to 5.

The expansion is expected to increase the plant's capacity by 1 million tires per year, and increase total production from 8.5 million to 9.5 million tires per year.

The company's goal is to combine advanced manufacturing capabilities with a core commitment to sustainability. According to the company, they use artificial intelligence to optimize production management and operate exclusively on renewable energy sources, implementing eco-friendly practices throughout the entire production chain.

The future plant is an important step in Michelin's long-term partnership with China to support high-quality growth and the green transition, Matthew Ye, president and CEO of Michelin Greater China, said at the opening ceremony.
