Algiers, Feb. 3 (Xinhua) — The Algerian Western Mining Railway, Africa's first heavy-duty desert railway, has opened to traffic, improving Algeria's national rail network and boosting transport and economic development in the country's southwestern regions.

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune officially launched the railway line at a ceremony held on Sunday in the southwestern province of Bechar.

The 950-km-long road, 575 km of which were built by the China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC) and Algerian state-owned companies, is the largest infrastructure project undertaken by a Chinese company in Algeria.

Antananarivo, February 3 (Xinhua) — Tropical Cyclone Fitia has killed seven people and affected more than 54,000 residents of Madagascar, Malagasy authorities reported on Monday.

More than 1,400 homes were destroyed and more than 9,000 were flooded, particularly in the northwest regions and the capital, Antananarivo, the National Bureau of Risk and Disaster Management said in its latest bulletin, released Monday morning.

In total, the cyclone affected 27 districts of Madagascar. It struck the country from the west on Saturday morning, then moved out to sea on Sunday through Vatomandry, a town on the east coast.

BEIJING, Feb. 3 (Xinhua) — Air China is expected to operate at least 70,000 flights during this year's Chunyun period, a special season for the Chinese transport system to accommodate mass migration before, during, and after the Spring Festival (Chunjie, the traditional Chinese Lunar New Year), which runs from February 2 to March 13 in 2026. OSLO, Feb. 3 (Xinhua) — Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen on Monday condemned the United States for its "condescending and divisive targeting" of the island.

Minsk, February 3 /Xinhua/ — “Welcome to the first Chinese language class of the new 2026 semester!” Ren Yi, 30, from China’s Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, confidently greets students of the Faculty of Chinese Language and Culture at the Belarusian State University of Foreign Languages (BSUL).

She's been living in Belarus for seven years now and is currently pursuing a postgraduate degree in journalism at Belarusian State University. Ren Yi also has another role she's proud of: teaching Chinese.

In 2018, Ren Yi, having completed her bachelor's degree in China, came to Belarus for the first time as a volunteer Chinese teacher. Attracted by the country's rich cultural atmosphere, she decided to pursue her master's and doctoral studies there.

"During my studies, the Belarusian teachers showed me endless patience and attention. Their kindness and openness filled me with a sense of kindness and warmth. I was deeply touched and decided that I, too, wanted to become a bridge of friendship and cooperation between China and Belarus, to help more Belarusians better understand China," says Ren Yi.

"In my classes, I want to not only teach the language but also open a window into the culture for my students. I often think about how to help them truly experience the history, aesthetics, and warmth of Chinese characters. Therefore, I try to bring elements of China's intangible cultural heritage into the classroom," she says.

During the first class of the new semester, Ren Yi introduced the students to the Chinese art of fan painting. Young Belarusians, one after another, tried their hand at creating unique pieces and marveling at the depth and richness of Chinese culture.

"Painting fans is so interesting! Wu Ren Yi always introduces us to the vibrant and diverse Chinese culture and makes us fall in love with China. I really enjoy her classes," notes BSUFL student Anastasia Adamovich.

"Ren Yi's classes are very interesting: she explains complex concepts simply and clearly. She introduces new words and grammar through stories and easy games, and we learn without even realizing it," says student Ksenia Kotova, fluent in Chinese. "Ren Yi always supports us, helping us not to be afraid of speaking and making mistakes. Thanks to her, I fell in love with the Chinese language and China, and she also strengthened my desire to dedicate myself to promoting mutual understanding and cooperation between the peoples of our two countries."
