TEHRAN, March 7 (Xinhua) — Iran said on Friday it has no plans to close the Strait of Hormuz, denying reports that the country had completely blocked the strategic waterway.

According to the Iranian news agency Tasnim, a senior officer of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) denied media reports about the alleged closure of the Strait of Hormuz in an interview with state television.

"Some people accuse us of closing the strait, but in fact, Iran did not close this waterway," the officer said, adding that Iran would conduct shipping in the area in accordance with international navigation rules.

Iranian state television, citing a military source, said on Friday that the Strait of Hormuz remained open but warned that any ships belonging to the United States or Israel would be treated as military targets.

Also on Friday, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Saeed Khatibzadeh told an international conference in New Delhi, India, that Iran has not closed the Strait of Hormuz and does not plan to do so in the near future.

"If Iran decides to close the strait, it will make an official statement," he said.

The IRGC said in a statement on Saturday that it had struck an oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz using a drone.

The tanker, named Prima, was struck by a drone after it ignored repeated warnings from the IRGC navy about the Strait of Hormuz being unsafe and prohibited from sailing, according to a statement released by the Tasnim news agency.

Dubai, March 7 (Xinhua) — Residents of Dubai and Abu Dhabi (UAE) received an emergency warning on their mobile phones on Saturday morning about a possible missile threat amid ongoing military action in the region.

The UAE Ministry of Interior urged residents to immediately seek shelter in the nearest secure building, stay away from windows, doors, and open spaces, and await further instructions. Authorities urged the public to rely on official channels for the latest news.

Eyewitnesses told local media that loud explosions were heard in both UAE cities on Saturday.

The Ministry of Defense stated that the country's air defense systems are actively responding to missile and drone strike threats from Iran. Officials noted that the loud noises reported by residents were caused by interception operations, not direct strikes on populated areas.

Sirens sounded at around 9:59 a.m. at Dubai International Airport, and again at around 10:05 a.m. Security screening and check-in procedures at the airport were temporarily suspended.

According to media reports, all flights to and from Dubai have been suspended until further notice. –0–

Moscow, March 7 (Xinhua) — Western and Central European countries are facing an energy collapse due to the crisis in the Middle East. Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova stated this in an interview with RIA Novosti on Friday.

"I think the most relevant context for this question is not even the situation around Ukraine, but the collapse that's engulfing Western and Central European countries due to the crisis in the Middle East. Energy prices have skyrocketed—both gas and oil," said M. Zakharova.

She recalled that the EU had banned itself from purchasing energy resources from Russia. Given the attack on Iran, she wondered where the EU now intended to get its fuel. –0–

BEIJING, March 7 (Xinhua) — China's foreign exchange reserves stood at $3.4278 trillion as of the end of February 2026, up $28.7 billion or 0.85 percent from the level at the end of January 2026, data released by the State Administration of Foreign Exchange (SAFE) showed Saturday.

Last month, the US dollar index rose, while prices of major global financial assets generally showed mixed dynamics, influenced by factors such as macroeconomic data, monetary policy, and the expectations of leading economies, the State Financial Committee reported.

The ministry said the increase in China's foreign exchange reserves in February was driven by the combined effects of exchange rate fluctuations and changes in asset prices.

China's economy is demonstrating stable and improving performance, as well as new and improved development momentum. The conditions conducive to the long-term sustainable development of the Chinese economy remain unchanged, which contributes to the maintenance of a generally stable level of foreign exchange reserves, the State Committee for Foreign Trade added. -0-

BEIJING, March 7 (Xinhua) — China has introduced an initiative to provide 15-minute breaks between classes and two hours of daily physical exercise for schoolchildren in all provincial-level regions of the country, Education Minister Huai Jinpeng said on Saturday.

According to monitoring conducted by the country's authoritative departments, the overall rate of excellent or good physical fitness among students in primary, middle, and higher education institutions nationwide has been steadily increasing, while the overall prevalence rate of myopia among students has been declining for the fourth consecutive year, Huai Jinpeng said at a press conference on the sidelines of the 4th session of the 14th National People's Congress.

China will continue to promote the campaign to strengthen students' physical fitness by creating physical education classes that are popular with students and encourage their active participation, and by organizing basketball, football, and volleyball matches on campuses. -0-
