UNITED NATIONS, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) — China's Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations Geng Shuang spoke out at the Security Council on Tuesday against a possible Israeli occupation of the entire Gaza Strip.

Recent media reports indicate that Israel has decided to step up its military offensive and completely occupy the Gaza Strip, and China is seriously concerned about this, he said.

“We call on Israel to immediately stop such dangerous actions. We call on all parties to conclude a binding and sustainable ceasefire without delay. We also call on countries with significant influence on the parties concerned to act in a fair and responsible manner and take concrete steps to help achieve a ceasefire,” the diplomat said.

Israeli military operations have killed more than 60,000 civilians in Gaza, and innocent people continue to die daily, the deputy permanent representative noted. The harsh reality has shown that military means are not a solution, and the surest way to save lives and free hostages is an immediate ceasefire, he stressed.

Two million innocent civilians in Gaza should not be victims of war and suffer further from man-made disasters, Geng Shuang said. According to him, under the current extreme blockade and siege, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues to worsen, with famine reaching alarming proportions.

The diplomat noted that restricting humanitarian access would only further exacerbate the collective punishment of Gaza residents and make it more difficult for surviving hostages to access life-saving materials. Israel must abide by international law, especially humanitarian law, fully restore humanitarian access and support humanitarian agencies such as the UN in delivering aid, Geng said.

The full implementation of the “two states for two peoples” plan and the establishment of an independent State of Palestine is the only viable way to resolve the Palestinian issue and prevent similar hostage crises from recurring, the diplomat said. The international community must jointly oppose unilateral actions that undermine the foundations of the “two states for two peoples” plan and intensify efforts to advance the political process towards its implementation, he stressed.

China will continue to work with the international community to end the fighting in Gaza, ease humanitarian suffering, realize the "two states for two peoples" plan, and ultimately achieve a comprehensive, just and lasting solution to the Palestinian issue, Geng Shuang said. –0–

BRASILIA, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) — Brazil will respond to the sharp tariff hike by the United States with a contingency plan and appeal to the World Trade Organization (WTO), President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said Tuesday.

At a meeting of the Council for Sustainable Social and Economic Development held in Brazil, the president called the US move “unfair” and emphasized Brazil’s progress on the international stage.

"The government makes a promise to the people of Brazil. We will implement an emergency plan to mitigate this unjust attack and alleviate its economic and social damage," said L.I. Lula da Silva.

“We will defend Brazilian workers and companies affected by these measures and will resort to all available mechanisms, including the WTO, in the name of our interests,” the president told business leaders, labor unions, agricultural representatives and members of civil society.

Brazil continues negotiations, he said, noting that talks with US authorities have been ongoing since March.

Brazil will formally announce its response to the tariff hikes on August 18, when its Foreign Ministry files a WTO challenge to the measure taken by the United States. –0–

PARIS, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) — A handover ceremony of historical photos taken during the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression donated by Marcus Detrez was held at the Chinese Embassy in France on Monday evening.

During the event, Chen Dong, envoy of the Chinese Embassy in France, presented M. Detrez, who donated 618 historical photographs collected by his grandfather Roger-Pierre Laurens, with a donation certificate and a letter of thanks from the Shanghai Songhu Memorial Hall of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression.

Many of the photographs, taken between the 1930s and 1950s, document the Battle of Songhu in 1937. The Shanghai Songhu Memorial Hall has included these historical photographs in its permanent collection.

These photographs document the atrocities committed by the Japanese invaders against Chinese civilians and are of great historical value for the study of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.

Speaking to reporters at the event, M. Detrez said the photographs captured history and he wanted more Westerners, especially young people, to learn about this part of history through the donated photographs. –0–

BEIJING, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) — Thanks to its unique geographical location and ever-improving health service system, the border city of Suifenhe in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province has seen a boom in cross-border medical and health services this summer, focusing on traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), injecting new impetus into the city's development.

As reported on the city government website, on August 4, more than 20 tourists from Vladivostok visited the Suifenhe People's Hospital, where they tried out various TCM procedures. Some chose acupuncture to treat leg and lower back pain, others preferred vacuum cupping to eliminate eczema, and still others went for massage sessions to treat cervical pain. Professional massage therapists skillfully helped tourists relieve tension in the neck area. Russian tourist Lisa shared her impressions with us: “We tried coffee ice cream with TCM herbs, and the doctor gave me a neck massage. Very professional, just wonderful!”

As an important Sino-Russian border crossing point, Suifenhe has been steadily optimizing its medical and healthcare industry structure in recent years. Suifenhe People's Hospital has integrated local resources of key specialties with unique areas such as TCM physical therapy and rehabilitation treatment, developing personalized health programs for Russian tourists. Professional interpreters accompany guests from appointment to rehabilitation observation, ensuring a seamless cross-border health and wellness experience.

Liu Simin, head of the TCM service and medicine export base at Suifenhe People's Hospital, said: "The newly opened TCM nutrition restaurant and herbal bar are also very popular with Russian tourists. The nutrition restaurant has developed special prescription formulas with adjusted dosages of herbs based on the physiological characteristics of Russians and the current weather conditions. Russian tourists were delighted with the taste and effect of the dishes."

According to statistics, the number of Russian tourists entering Suifenhe for medical and health services has increased significantly since the beginning of this year. This boom has not only given momentum to the development of Suifenhe's medical and health industry, but also contributed to the related development of such industries as catering, hotel business and tourism. -0-

ACCRA, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) — The African Health Sovereignty Summit opened in Ghana's capital Accra on Tuesday with a call to rethink global health governance amid a rapidly changing geopolitical and economic landscape.

Convened by Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama, the summit aims to usher in a new era of health sovereignty based on national ownership, investment and leadership.

J.D. Mahama called for efforts to redesign the architecture that failed to take into account the voices, needs and innovations of Africa during the opening.

Ghana's President said Africa needs to develop a health system that not only responds to health crises but also builds resilience, promotes equality and enhances the dignity of its people. He also called for a new approach to health financing on the continent.

“I extend an open invitation to all countries represented here to join us in building an ecosystem of health investment in Africa that is driven by purpose, grounded in equity and rooted in our sovereignty,” the President added.

The summit was also attended by high-level officials, including World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and senior officials from other African countries. –0–

BEIJING, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) — A play based on Russian writer and playwright Anton Chekhov's short story "The Lady with the Dog" will be staged at the upcoming Wuzhen Theatre Festival in China, a press conference for the event was held on Tuesday.

The 12th Wuzhen Theatre Festival will be held from October 16 to 26 this year in the town of the same name in Jiaxing City, Zhejiang Province, east China, according to a statement from the organizer posted on its official account on Chinese social media platform Wechat.

The above-mentioned performance will be prepared by the Chinese troupe “Babeta” /”Tower of Babel”/. The director of the play is She Mujie, a graduate of Gennady Trostyanetsky’s class at the Russian State Institute of Performing Arts.

The play is based on the classic work by A. Chekhov, “The Lady with the Dog,” written in 1898. It tells the story of a hidden affair between a married man and a married woman. As the post suggests, the Chinese director’s adaptation is bold, avant-garde, and original, and aims to maintain a delicate balance between interest and deep meaning.

The 11-day festival will feature 71 performances of 25 dramas from 10 countries, including 10 Chinese and 15 foreign ones, the press conference said. -0-

UNITED NATIONS, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) — A senior United Nations official on Tuesday warned against a possible escalation of Israeli military operations in the Gaza Strip.

Recent reports about a possible decision by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to expand Israeli military operations to the entire enclave, if true, are deeply worrying, said Miroslav Jenca, UN Assistant Secretary-General for Europe, Central Asia and the Americas.

"This would have catastrophic consequences for millions of Palestinians and could further endanger the lives of the remaining /Israeli/ hostages in Gaza," Jenca told the Security Council at a briefing.

“International law is clear on this matter. Gaza is and must remain an integral part of a future Palestinian state,” he stressed. –0–
