"Let's help together!" This is probably how one can briefly describe the proposal of school student Evgeny Rusakov, with which he addressed the management of the RUDN Medical Institute. Evgeny and his brother Vladislav, a postgraduate student in the Department of Public Health, Healthcare and Hygiene, have recently become volunteers for the Moscow Red Cross Society. In a month and a half, they have managed to take part in several events to send Syrian refugees to temporary accommodation points across Russia.

And Evgeny came up with the idea of inviting the staff and students of the RUDN Medical Institute to join the humanitarian mission. Of course, the institute responded.

"I and all the students, as well as the staff of our university, regularly join charity and other socially significant events. Thus, in the summer I participated in conducting lectures on first aid at the Litvinovo children's camp, and at the educational and methodological center of military-patriotic education "Avangard" – on the rules for transporting victims. As for assistance to the Red Cross, each event to send refugees is a huge effort for everyone involved. And our university in early September provided great support to the humanitarian mission in purchasing and transporting things," – Vladislav Rusakov, postgraduate student of the Department of Public Health, Healthcare and Hygiene of the Medical Institute of RUDN.

Aid packages

Mikhail Chernyaev, a candidate of medical sciences and associate professor of the Department of Hospital Surgery with a course in pediatric surgery, was especially active in the work. He took part in purchasing and forming individual “aid packages” that allow refugees to hold out for the first time in a new country.

These sets included:

food for three days (canned first and second courses, snacks); personal hygiene items (toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, etc.); assistance for children (baby food, diapers, coloring books).

Approximately 1.5 tons of necessary items were purchased. The refugees were given clothes separately: they were given out on the spot during sorting and even right in the carriages to those who were leaving for other regions of the country.

"The refugees expressed great gratitude to the Red Cross, volunteers and our country. They were also very interested in where they could learn Russian better, get documents and find temporary work," Mikhail Chernyaev.

By personal example

An important result of the volunteer work was the decision to develop cooperation between RUDN and the Moscow Red Cross Society. Before collecting things, the organization had already held a lecture at our university on the fight against tuberculosis. And at the end of September, an excursion for students to the museum and training center of the society is planned.

"Since volunteering cannot be mandatory, it was decided to introduce students to the charitable activities of the society and, among other things, to show by our own example that good can be done with our own hands. For this, personal money is not always needed. It is enough to show attentiveness, care and make personal efforts, which can be decisive for a person in a difficult situation. We hope that some of the students will become full-time volunteers of the Red Cross," Mikhail Chernyaev.

Ending the summer with good deeds. Polytechnicians delivered humanitarian aid to the DPR

At the end of August, representatives of the military-historical club "Our Polytechnic" made a working trip to the Donetsk People's Republic. The main goal of the mission was the delivery of humanitarian supplies to military personnel and civilians, but the trip also included a cultural and educational component. This initiative was a continuation of the regular volunteer activities of the university, which have been carried out since 2022.

The road to Donbass began with crossing the Rostov region and moving towards the border territories. The first settlement that met the delegation was the city of Antratsit. It has remained virtually unchanged since 2014: signs, advertisements and buildings have been preserved. Time seemed to have stopped, and only military checkpoints and equipment reminded us of today.

The route then led through Debaltseve and Yenakiyeve, cities where the war had left its mark. Destroyed houses, traces of fires, damaged bridges and roads clearly demonstrated the consequences of military action. In Yenakiyeve, the delegation saw the consequences of a drone attack on a gas station: burnt cars and half-destroyed structures remained a silent reminder of recent events.

The Spartak district at the entrance to Donetsk made a special impression. This quarter became one of the symbols of resistance and suffered the most during the fighting. Empty streets, multi-story buildings with broken windows and openings sealed with polyethylene – all this became a silent testimony of what was experienced. However, in the very center of the city, the delegation was met with the opposite picture: lively streets, many young people, working shops and cafes. Despite the proximity of the front, Donetsk continues to live an active urban life.

The main purpose of the trip was to deliver humanitarian aid. This time, more than 150 camouflage nets made by students and staff of SPbPU, a UAZ vehicle, components, tools and electric generators were transferred to the DPR.

Humanitarian aid was sent to support both military personnel and civilians. In addition, it was possible to collect museum exhibits – trophies and items from the front line, which will soon be presented in the exhibition spaces of the university and the city.

During the trip, the university representatives visited artillery units and were able to see the living conditions of the soldiers. The soldiers set up rest areas, kitchens, field baths and even small sports areas on their own. These examples clearly showed how important the interaction between volunteers and the army is: even simple assistance allows servicemen to feel care and support from the rear. Perhaps the most vivid impression from the trip was communication with officers and soldiers. It is one thing to follow what is happening in the SVO zone through a phone screen and quite another to listen to their combat stories live.

An equally important part of the mission was the development of educational projects. Admission to SPbPU's continuing professional education programs was organized for participants and veterans of the SVO. By the end of the year, more than 120 people will be able to take advanced training courses in high-tech industries.

This approach not only helps to provide soldiers and veterans with knowledge needed in civilian life, but also promotes their social adaptation after service. Such programs have already become an important part of the university's humanitarian work, and the number of participants is growing every month.

"Polytech systematically develops additional professional education for participants and veterans of the SVO, based on the diagnostics of educational needs, modular design and employment support. Based on the survey and employer requests, priority areas and profiles of students have been identified, participation formats have been agreed upon with key partners," said the head of the Directorate of Continuing Education and Industry Partnership SPbPU Ivan Kurta. — Courses on fire safety, UAS maintenance, training of industrial training masters, psychological, pedagogical and methodological foundations of additional professional education, state and municipal management, CAD and electronics are ready for launch. The Polytechnic Center for Professional Development of Veterans of the Northwestern Military District is being formed. A replicable model is being tested, including diagnostics, individual routes, modular practice-oriented programs, mentoring, internships and assistance with employment. A program for teachers and mentors has been developed, focused on digital support and individualization of educational trajectories."

At the end of the trip, the delegation visited the Alley of Memory of the Fallen Children of Donbass, a memorial erected in honor of the young residents of the region who died as a result of shelling. This place has become a symbol of the resilience and pain experienced by the residents of Donetsk. Residents of the city regularly bring flowers and toys here, maintaining the memory of the innocent victims of the conflict.

According to Ivan Kolomeitsev, Associate Professor of the Higher School of Social Sciences at SPbPU, humanitarian trips have become an integral part of the university's life: Honestly, I have already lost count of the number of missions. But it is especially pleasant to see that students are not indifferent and actively involved in the work. I would like to thank all the polytechnics, graduates and friends of the university, as well as our regular partners from the government of St. Petersburg and the Gorelectrotrans company for their support.

From the summer of 2022 to the present, under the auspices of Peter the Great SPbPU, more than 50 tons of various cargo have been delivered to military personnel and civilians in the SVO area. Among them are 9 all-terrain vehicles, car parts, tools for various purposes, special equipment, communications equipment, clothing, food and hygiene products. In populated areas of the Zaporizhia region, with the direct participation and under the guidance of university employees and volunteers, the water supply system has been restored. In addition, more than 1,800 camouflage nets with a total area of over 36 thousand square meters have been manufactured and transferred to units of the Russian Armed Forces and other departments. Meetings with SVO participants are regularly held at the university.

On September 8, the Day of Remembrance for the Victims of the Siege of Leningrad, a series of screenings of the literary and musical composition “Russia, Don’t Be Afraid, We Are With You” began at the Polytechnic for first-year students.

For the fourth year, within the framework of the “Creative Semesters” discipline, a conversation has been conducted with students about the events in freezing blockaded Leningrad and the Donbass burning from bombings using music and words.

"Today is the day of the beginning of the Leningrad blockade, but also the day of the liberation of Donbass from the Nazi invaders. So, in one day, two such events have come together, as in our work, born in 2016, when a huge milestone in our history began and continues to this day," said the author of the project, actress of the G. A. Tovstonogov Bolshoi Drama Theater Alexandra Kulikova. "I have great hope that our word will be heard. And it should not be otherwise. Because we are honest, and the Polytechnic is permeated with attention to the young – to those who are to seek, build, love, remember and pass on."

On September 8, two screenings took place in a row. The first to hear poems by Anna Akhmatova and Olga Berggolts, poems and documentary texts by Donbass residents, accompanied by an orchestra, were first-year students of the Institute of Energy and the Institute of Computer Science and Cybersecurity.

Full halls, hundreds of students, and like one! Attentive and listening… They managed to put their phones aside for a while and live this story with us. I feel great gratitude and tenderness for each of them and I believe that each of them has purity, compassion, love for people and their country, – noted Alexandra Kulikova.

The composition, which combined poetry, documentary evidence and music, became an important emotional and educational experience for the students.

I couldn't hold back my tears… Expressive reading, piercing music and the topic itself – it was unexpected to find myself at such a lecture. This is a very important work of the university – everyone should know about the terrible events that happened and are still happening, – shared 1st year student of the Institute of Historical and Cultural Studies Valentina Fomina.

The management of Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University is grateful to the actress of the G. A. Tovstonogov Bolshoi Drama Theater Alexandra Kulikova and the conductor of the Donetsk Philharmonic Valeria Putra, who united singers and musicians to implement this important statement. Preserving the memory of the exploits of the past and present helps polytechnicians become not only the engineering elite of the country, but also people devoted to their Fatherland.

International Summer: Polytechnic Students Get to Know Russia

Translation. Region: Russian Federal

Foreign students of the preparatory faculty of the Polytechnic University from more than ten countries spent their holidays getting to know Russia and St. Petersburg. Guests from India, Pakistan, Guinea-Bissau, Nigeria, Angola, Cameroon, Egypt, Algeria and many other countries rested in a summer camp, made friends, went on excursions and immersed themselves in the cultural life of the Northern capital.

The camp program was designed so that every day would give new impressions. The students visited magnificent palaces and parks, cozy courtyards and embankments of St. Petersburg, and discovered the beauty of the Leningrad Region.

Particular attention was paid to deep immersion in culture. For students from Pakistan, for example, a special interactive lecture was held on "Saint Petersburg: Historical and Modern Mysteries of the Northern Capital."

The children also took a virtual journey from the founding of the city by Peter I to the present day, learned about the main museums, theaters and architectural masterpieces. The meeting ended with a fascinating quiz, which helped consolidate new knowledge.

But the main result of the summer was, of course, friendship without borders. Language barriers easily collapsed during joint games, quests and informal evenings, giving way to sincere laughter and mutual understanding. The summer camp once again showed that, despite the differences in cultures and traditions, all Polytechnic students are one big and friendly team.

The organizers and participants thank everyone who helped make this summer so eventful. The energy and openness to the world of the Polytechnic University's international students make the university community even brighter and stronger.

Now the summer impressions have become a pleasant baggage of memories, which will help to start the school year with fresh strength. Let's wish everyone a productive autumn and success.

NSU Master's Student Launches Startup to Produce Important Cheese-Making Enzyme

Translation. Region: Russian Federal

Source: Novosibirsk State University –

An important disclaimer is at the bottom of this article.

Master's student Faculty of Natural Sciences of Novosibirsk State University (FNS NSU) Valeria Meleshenko was among the winners of the Student Startup competition of the University Technological Entrepreneurship Platform. Her project to create an enzyme for cheese making received a grant of 1 million rubles and is aimed at developing domestic biotechnology.

The enzyme chymosin, which is used to coagulate milk in cheesemaking, is currently mostly obtained in Russia from calf stomachs or purchased abroad. This approach is both expensive and limited in its scope of application. Valeria's project offers a fundamentally different approach – genetically engineered production of chymosin. This involves using a synthetic gene obtained from a database and introduced into a yeast strain. As a result, it becomes possible to produce the enzyme in a laboratory, without using animals.

— This approach is quite popular in the field of biotechnology today, it allows to make production more technological, and at the same time humane, since it does not require mass slaughter of animals. For example, insulin production is organized in a similar way, but bacteria are used there, and yeast is used in my project, — explained Valeria Meleshenko.

At the first stage, which also became her bachelor's thesis under the supervision of Dmitry Shchebakov, an employee of the State Research Center of Virology and Biotechnology "Vector" of Rospotrebnadzor, Valeria had already obtained a strain capable of producing the necessary enzyme.

The next step is to test it at cheese-making plants.

— My task is to produce a sufficient amount of chymosin and conduct tests in real production. If it turns out that there is no difference in the quality of the cheese or even improvements appear, for example, the bitterness goes away or less enzyme is needed to curdle the milk, the project can be considered successful, — the author of the startup adds.

The project already has potential partners. Successful negotiations were held with representatives of the Cheese Research Institute of the Federal Altai Scientific Center of Agrobiotechnology (FANCA), Barnaul. And in case of positive results at this stage, a cheese-making enterprise in Kuzbass is ready to join the project.

According to Valeria, the startup did not simply grow out of her bachelor's thesis. "It is important to note that my victory was made possible largely thanks to the teachers of the NSU Natural Sciences Department, who taught me flexible and analytical thinking rather than blind memorization. And participation in Technohack, a hackathon from the NSU Advanced Engineering School, gave me my first ideas about creating startups," she emphasizes.

An important component of the project is that it not only promotes the development of domestic production of an enzyme important for the food industry, but also expands the use of advanced technologies in this industry.

— Biotechnological projects are one of the most promising areas of development. For NSU students, participation in such initiatives is an opportunity to get involved in real research and create startups that are in demand in industry while still studying, — the university notes.

Valeria continues working on the prototype. She has a year to implement the project – that's how long the grant from the Student Startup competition gives. If the testing is successful, Russia will have its own technology for producing the enzyme, which today has to be mostly purchased abroad.

Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Alexander Novak paid a working visit to the Syrian Arab Republic. The Deputy Prime Minister held meetings with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani and Head of the Syrian Presidential Administration Maher al-Sharaa.

The parties considered the prospects for interaction between the countries across the entire spectrum of areas of bilateral cooperation.

The Russian side noted the possibility of providing assistance in restoring the energy sector and the humanitarian sphere, including the readiness to launch a number of projects to provide the Syrian Arab Republic with fuel, food, and pharmaceuticals. Cooperation in the cultural, scientific and educational spheres was also discussed. Thus, at the moment, almost 4 thousand Syrians are studying in Russian universities, which can become a good basis for training qualified national personnel.

Alexander Novak proposed resuming the work of the intergovernmental commission on trade and economic cooperation, which has proven itself to be a good instrument for mutual development in the economic sphere.

"Russia and Syria are linked by long-standing ties of friendship and partnership, time-tested, based on mutual respect and consideration of each other's interests. We hope that at the new historical stage they will also develop for the benefit of our peoples. The current visit was a good opportunity for a substantive discussion of the prospects of Russian-Syrian relations," said Alexander Novak.
