MANILA, October 10 (Xinhua) — An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.6 struck off the coast of Davao Oriental province in the southern Philippines on Friday morning, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology reported.

The tremors were recorded at 9:43 a.m. local time, approximately 62 km east of Manai. The earthquake originated at a depth of 10 km.

The institute said the tectonic earthquake would trigger aftershocks and cause significant damage.
