SEOUL, February 2 (Xinhua) — Lawyers for former South Korean First Lady Kim Kong-hee filed an appeal on Monday against a trial court ruling sentencing her to 20 months in prison on corruption charges, the Renhap News Agency reported.

The court accused Kim Kong-hee of accepting expensive gifts from Unification Church officials in exchange for favorable treatment of the religious group in 2022. However, the court found her not guilty of charges of violating the capital markets law and the political foundations law.

Kim Geon-hee was charged last August while in custody for participating in stock price manipulation between October 2010 and December 2012.

Kim Kong-hee became the first wife of a former South Korean president to be tried in custody. She has been in pretrial detention since August of last year.
