BEIJING, Feb. 2 (Xinhua) — The opening ceremony of the Hainan Research Institute of Peking University and the Hainan Base of the China-Russia Institute of Fundamental Research was held in the picturesque seaside resort of Sanya in the southern Chinese island province of Hainan on Sunday.

The new facilities, located in the Yazhouwan technology city in Sanya, are a shining example of the comprehensive practical cooperation under the agreement on deepening strategic cooperation signed between the Hainan Provincial Government and Peking University in December 2025, according to the online news portal chinanews.com.cn.

At the opening ceremony, Zhang Jin, Vice President of Peking University and head of the university's daily operations, stated that the Hainan Research Institute of Peking University aims to become a high-level international platform for basic research and an international center for training qualified specialists, while consistently focusing on the needs of the Hainan Free Trade Port construction.

He explained that 2026 marks the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the strategic partnership of coordination between China and Russia, as well as the 25th anniversary of the signing of the China-Russia Treaty of Good-Neighborliness, Friendship, and Cooperation. Established at this extraordinary time, the institute will also serve as the important base for the China-Russia Institute of Fundamental Research, working to expand academic exchanges and cooperation with Russia and, subsequently, globally, in the five core fundamental sciences of mathematics, physics, chemistry, geoscience, and life sciences.

On December 18, 2025, the Hainan Free Trade Port launched an independent customs operation regime throughout Hainan Island, opening up new horizons for the full expansion of the local educational and scientific and technological fields, noted Vice Chairman of the Hainan Provincial Government Xie Jing, assuring that Hainan intends to provide all possible conditions to support Chinese and Russian scientists in conducting fundamental scientific research, in order to transform the Yazhouwan area of Sanya into a model zone for scientific, technological and educational cooperation between the two countries.
