BANJUL, January 2 (Xinhua) — At least seven people were killed and 96 others were rescued after a boat suspected of carrying more than 200 illegal migrants capsized around midnight Wednesday off the coast of Gambia, the country's Defense Ministry said Thursday.
According to a press release, the vessel capsized near the village of Jinak. After receiving a distress call, the Gambian Navy launched a search and rescue operation in coordination with national security authorities and emergency response specialists.
According to the latest information, 96 people have been rescued. Thirty-nine of them were taken to the hospital, and 57 received medical treatment at the naval base. Rescuers recovered seven bodies, and several more passengers remain missing. Some of the victims were not Gambian citizens, the ministry reported.
The Gambia government has launched a national emergency response plan, and search operations are continuing and intensifying, according to a press release.
