Geneva, January 1 (Xinhua) — Around 40 people were killed and more than 110 injured in a fire at a bar in the ski resort of Crans-Montana in the canton of Valais in southwestern Switzerland, local police said on Thursday.

The head of the Valais cantonal police, Frédéric Giesler, provided the relevant information at a second press conference held in the afternoon.

"According to our estimates, approximately 40 people were killed. Another 115 were injured, most seriously," said F. Giesler.
