Beijing, February 2 (Xinhua) — China is an important participant, contributor, and leader in global wetland conservation and restoration, and the theory and practice of Chinese green development have received full recognition and approval from the international community, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said on Monday.
World Wetlands Day, celebrated annually on February 2, this year is held under the theme “Wetlands and Traditional Knowledge: Honoring Cultural Heritage.”
"Wetlands, forests, and oceans are considered the three major ecosystems of the Earth and are vital to the survival and development of humankind," Lin Jian said at a regular press briefing when asked to describe China's achievements in wetland conservation.
As the Chinese diplomat pointed out, since the 18th CPC National Congress, the country has consistently adhered to the concept of “emerald waters and green mountains are priceless treasures” and has made historic progress in preserving and restoring wetlands.
Currently, Lin Jian continued, China ranks first in Asia in terms of wetland area and fourth in the world. Furthermore, the country is home to the largest number of internationally recognized wetland cities.
As a contracting party to the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, China is an important participant, contributor, and leader in global wetland conservation and restoration, stated the official representative of the Chinese Foreign Ministry.
He recalled that China initiated the creation of an international mangrove center, which 20 countries have so far expressed their intention to join, and has also launched international cooperation to exchange knowledge on the protection of mangrove ecosystems in regions such as Southeast Asia and Africa.
In addition, according to Lin Jian, China holds international workshops on mangrove conservation and restoration, providing political, technical and managerial training to personnel from countries in the Global South in this area.
Lin Jian noted that China has won the international environmental award "Defenders of the Earth" several times in a row, and its protected areas have received the status of world biosphere reserve.
"Protecting wetlands and combating climate change are complex tasks and pose a shared responsibility for the entire international community," the Chinese diplomat emphasized.
China will continue to resolutely promote modernization based on the harmonious coexistence of man and nature, actively support and participate in global environmental governance, and work together with all parties to build a community of life on planet Earth, Lin Jian concluded.
