JOHANNESBURG, December 12 (Xinhua) — At least two people were killed and several others were trapped under rubble after a multi-story building under construction on the grounds of a temple in the South African city of Durban collapsed on Friday, local authorities said.

Authorities have not yet released the exact number of people still trapped under the rubble, but eight victims received medical attention and were taken to nearby hospitals.

"It has now been confirmed that two people have sadly died under the rubble, and three more people are believed to be alive but remain under the rubble," said Kelsey-Jay Myrick, a spokesperson for local rescue service IPSS Medical Rescue.

Five people were rescued from one side of the building without serious injuries, the spokeswoman added, noting that rescuers were continuing to search for those still trapped under the rubble.
