BANGKOK, December 12 (Xinhua) — Thailand's King Maha Vajiralongkorn has approved a decree dissolving the lower house of parliament, paving the way for general elections early next year, according to a statement published in the Royal Gazette on Friday.

The decree signed by Prime Minister Anuthin Chanvirakun cites his administration's status as a "minority government" as the primary reason for the dissolution. "The current administration, which took office in September 2025, consists of a coalition of several parties that failed to secure a majority in the House of Representatives," the document states.

Meanwhile, effectively addressing the nation's most pressing challenges requires a stable government, and continued minority rule risks political instability, which could damage the country's economic system and international trust, the decree notes. "The appropriate solution is to dissolve the House of Representatives to hold new general elections… returning political decision-making power to the people," the decree emphasizes.

According to Thailand's constitution, the Election Commission must hold general elections within 45 to 60 days of the king's approval of the decree. –0–
