VIENNA, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) — The resumption of inspections by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Iran will create "promising ground" for broader progress, the agency's Director General Rafael Grossi told the agency's Board of Governors on Monday.

Mr Grossi said Iran's nuclear programme remains a focus of the IAEA's efforts, adding that he had worked "constantly and systematically" to restore the necessary cooperation between the IAEA and Iran.

He noted that “progress has been made” in the ongoing technical discussions.

The success of the talks between Iran and the IAEA would highlight the importance of “meaningful diplomatic consultations and processes” that are promising and can “lead to positive results,” he said.

“There is still time, not much, but always enough when there is goodwill and a clear sense of responsibility,” said R. Grossi.

Iran suspended cooperation with the IAEA after Israel and the United States struck its nuclear facilities and killed Iranian nuclear scientists in June. But the two sides remain in contact. On Saturday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Iran and the IAEA were “very close” to reaching an agreement on new terms of cooperation. –0–
