The striking scenes of director Yuri Bykov's new thriller "The Summit" were filmed not in the mountains, but in Moscow's "Gorky Virtual Studio 55.8", subordinate to the capital's Department of CultureMos.ru reports on the process of creating the painting.
According to the film's plot, a mysterious man, Dmitry Zorin (Artem Bystrov), arrives at a mountaineering camp. He and a group of 10 enthusiasts are tasked with ascending to the mountain's summit under the supervision of three guides (Kirill Polukhin, Andrey Smolyakov, and Ivan Fominov). On their way to the 5,200-meter peak, they face blizzards, avalanches, and extreme cold, but the main obstacle is facing their fears and past mistakes.
The location filming for "Summit" took place in the North Caucasus, including the Elbrus region, the Arkhyz ski resort, and other picturesque locations in Kabardino-Balkaria and Karachay-Cherkessia. Some crew members had to overcome their fears to achieve spectacular shots. A real barracks was even built for the shoot at an altitude of 3,300 meters above sea level.
However, filming the entire sequence in the mountains was impossible for safety reasons. Stunts are fraught with significant risk, which increases significantly in the challenging weather conditions of the high mountains. Therefore, the crew moved to Gorky Virtual Studio 55.8 in Moscow. Its soundstage is currently located in the studio recently opened by Sergei Sobyanin. studio complex Gorky Film Studios on Valdaisky Proezd.
For filming, a mock-up of a mountaineering barracks with dilapidated walls and broken windows was built on the set. Artificial snow drifting through the cracks added to the atmosphere. The virtual production team faced its own challenging task: the landscape outside the barracks window had to be photorealistic, making it impossible to imagine that the filming was taking place on a soundstage.
"We designed and installed a giant LED screen measuring 16 by seven meters. This allowed us to fully recreate the atmosphere of the highlands indoors. To ensure the audience truly believed in the reality of the event, the image was displayed in HDR format with a color depth of 10 bits—over a billion shades. This ensured a perfect tonal pattern without any jaggies in gradients," said Alexey Evdokimov, head of Gorky Virtual Studio 55.8.
The actors spent several days filming like this. Outside the barracks windows, day gave way to night, and the glow of the Milky Way gave way to a harsh blizzard. Meanwhile, the studio screen allowed the texture and volume of the snowstorm to be conveyed.
Filming has already been completed. The premiere is scheduled for 2026.
