Beijing, December 14 (Xinhua) — China's release of evidence received from Russia related to Japan's infamous "Unit 731" is not just a practice of information exchange, but a powerful act of solidarity between the two countries in the fight to preserve historical memory, which has significant implications for the present and future. Russian experts stated this in a written interview with Xinhua.

On Saturday, the 12th National Remembrance Day for the Victims of the Nanjing Massacre, the Central Archives of China released a package of declassified archives provided by the Russian side, covering the period from May 11, 1939 to December 25, 1950, containing trial transcripts of Unit 731 members, investigation reports into the unit's crimes, and internal official correspondence of the Soviet Union's authorities.

"This event, timed to coincide with a memorable date, is profoundly significant for the joint defense of historical truth and the fight against the growing trend of historical nihilism," said Artem Semenov, advisor to the Governor of the Moscow Region and member of the Rossotrudnichestvo Public Council.

He noted that Unit 731, infamous for its inhumane human experiments, is one of the darkest symbols of Japanese militarism. These crimes remained in the shadows for a long time, and attempts to cover them up or distort them, unfortunately, continue.

According to the Central Archives of China, archival materials provided by Russia reveal for the first time the Soviet Union's investigative process during the preliminary stages of the 1949 Khabarovsk Trials, which identified more than 200 people linked to Unit 731 crimes and ultimately selected 12 war criminals for public trials.

Those brought to trial fully confessed to their crimes related to violations of international conventions and the preparation and conduct of bacteriological warfare.

"Russian archives containing evidence of Unit 731's activities represent a valuable source of information. Their publication will supplement and confirm existing data, making the picture of the Japanese militarists' crimes even more complete and indisputable. This will deal a serious blow to any attempts to deny or downplay the scale of these atrocities," said A. Semenov.

According to Marina Dmitrieva, Deputy Director for Science and Innovation at the Far Eastern Federal University's Institute of Oriental Studies, the publication of the archives draws the world's attention to the scale and brutality of Unit 731's crimes.

"The documents serve as a reminder of the importance of the principles enshrined in the Charters of the Nuremberg and Tokyo Tribunals and serve as a warning about the consequences of violating humanity, which is crucial for maintaining the modern international legal order," she said. "Their publication is a practical step toward protecting the post-war world order based on the UN Charter and historical justice."

Experts believe that China and Russia's collaboration in publishing these archives demonstrates that countries that have experienced the horrors of war are willing to join forces to protect the truth and prevent a recurrence of tragedies. This will allow for a broader public understanding of these tragic pages of history, a reminder of the suffering of the victims, and the need to learn from the past.

"China and Russia, as the main victorious countries in World War II and permanent members of the UN Security Council, bear a special responsibility for preserving the historical memory and protecting the results of that war. Their joint actions in this direction have profound symbolic and practical significance," A. Semenov emphasized.

"Chinese-Russian cooperation in this area serves as an example of how countries can and should work together to combat the falsification of history, using diplomatic, academic, and public channels. This strengthens strategic mutual trust and the moral authority of both countries," stated M. Dmitrieva.

"In 2026-2027, Russia and China will hold cross-years of education. This is an excellent opportunity for universities to contribute to the preservation of history. Conferences, roundtables, and exhibitions of historical documents dedicated to shared history will help preserve memory among the youth of both countries," the expert concluded.

During World War II, the Japanese invaders established a network of biological and chemical weapons in many Asian countries, and the base of Unit 731, a secret unit of the Japanese army engaged in the research and development of biological and chemical weapons, was established in Harbin (Heilongjiang Province, Northeast China) and served as the main center of militaristic Japan for conducting bacteriological warfare and human experiments.

At least 3,000 people from China, the USSR, and other countries and regions became victims of bacteriological experiments on humans conducted by Unit 731. -0-

Tehran, December 14 (Xinhua) — Iran's Foreign Ministry on Sunday rejected accusations by Lebanese Foreign Minister Youssef Raji that Tehran is interfering in Beirut's internal affairs, describing diplomatic relations between the countries as "centuries-old" and strong.

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Esmail Baghaei commented on the tensions during his weekly press conference. Earlier, Raji publicly alleged Iranian "interference," and media reports surfaced that he was blocking the inauguration of Iran's new ambassador to Beirut.

E. Baghaei emphasized that the exchange of ambassadors is proceeding as usual, adding that the new Lebanese envoy recently assumed his duties in Tehran. Regarding the Iranian ambassador in Beirut, he reported that Iran "has submitted the relevant requests and completed the necessary procedures." The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson expressed hope that the process "will proceed naturally."

Responding to Y. Raja's accusations, E. Baghaei stated that Iran refuses to engage in discussions that distract from Lebanon's national interests. He stated that the priority should be "defending Lebanon from Israel's ongoing crimes" and preserving its sovereignty. The Iranian diplomat called on Lebanese factions to prioritize dialogue to counter "Israeli domination."

Tensions between Iran and Lebanon erupted last month after Y. Raji posted on the social media site X, citing alleged warnings from Iranian officials about the consequences of disarming Hezbollah, which he viewed as foreign interference. Y. Raji reiterated his accusations in a recent interview with the Lebanese television channel MTV and invited his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, to meet in a third country.

A. Araghchi denied allegations of Iranian interference in Lebanon's internal affairs. He declined to meet in a third country, but welcomed dialogue to strengthen bilateral relations and invited Y. Raji to visit Iran. However, on December 10, the Lebanese Foreign Minister declined the invitation, continuing to insist on a neutral venue. On December 11, A. Araghchi wrote in X that his colleague's refusal to visit "raises confusion."

Jerusalem/Gaza, December 14 (Xinhua) — Raed Saad, the head of the Hamas military wing's weapons production headquarters, was killed in an airstrike in the Gaza Strip on Saturday, the Israel Defense Forces and the Shin Bet security service reported.

The Israeli military named R. Saad as one of the organizers of the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, and “one of the last remaining senior militants” in Gaza.

They claim that R. Saad was "directly responsible for Hamas's ceasefire violations in recent months," accusing him of overseeing continued weapons production during the truce.

Hamas has not confirmed the death of R. Saad, but accused Israel of trying to disrupt the US-brokered ceasefire.

“The ongoing crimes in Gaza, including the attack on a civilian vehicle in western Gaza City, constitute a flagrant violation of the ceasefire agreement signed under US President Donald Trump’s plan,” the movement said in a statement.

NANCHANG, Dec. 14 (Xinhua) — The surface area of China's largest freshwater lake, Poyang Lake, has shrunk by 90 percent compared to the peak season, with the water level in the body of water falling below the safety limit, local authorities said Sunday.

As of 6:00 a.m. Sunday, the water level at the iconic Xinzi Lake hydrological station in East China's Jiangxi Province had dropped to just 8 meters.

This year, the water level in Poyang Lake dropped below the 12-meter low-water warning line for the first time on August 8, 87 days earlier than the average for previous years. As of today, the lake has been below the low-water warning line for 217 days, meaning the lake has been experiencing low water levels for almost two-thirds of the year.

To address the problem, a nearby waterworks in Duchang County has deployed 10 pumps at full capacity to pump water from the outer part of the lake to the intake area, said Wang Chunhua, head of the production and operation department of Duchang Runquan Water Supply Company.

The company also stepped up inspections of drinking water sources and increased the frequency of water quality testing to ensure safe drinking water for the 160,000 urban and rural residents living nearby.

In recent years, the lake has repeatedly set new low water level records, with a trend towards an earlier start to the dry season, its lengthening, and lower water levels.

In 2022, the water level in Lake Poyang dropped to a record low of 4.6 meters. In 2023, the lake entered its dry season on July 20, the earliest on record.

Experts warn that prolonged low water levels will impact the wintering grounds of hundreds of thousands of migratory birds, as well as the breeding season of aquatic animals.

Relevant authorities in areas around the lake are closely monitoring the situation, implementing precise water management measures and responding to emergency situations to minimize the negative impacts of low water levels.

Lake Poyang has a unique ecosystem and is an important wintering site for waterfowl in Asia. The peak migration period for migratory birds heading to the lake begins in mid-December and continues until early January of the following year. -0-

BEIJING, Dec. 14 (Xinhua) — China's self-developed high-speed rail technology marks significant progress for the country in both technological innovation and operational capability.

These achievements are embodied in the Shenyang-Baihe High-Speed Railway (HSR) in northeast China, which will enter service in September 2025 and features new trains and systems designed to adapt to extreme conditions and meet intelligent control requirements.

The Fuxing CR400BF-GS electric multi-purpose rolling stock used to operate trains on this line was specially designed for regions with extremely cold climates.

Meanwhile, the construction of the aforementioned East Siberian Railway utilized advances in intelligent manufacturing. China Railway No. 9 Group Co., Ltd. manufactured over 130,000 rail slabs, which play a key role in ensuring the smooth running of trains at high speeds. Each slab is 5.6 meters long and 2.5 meters wide, and the production process took just 10 minutes. The entire height difference is controlled to within the thickness of a human hair, significantly improving precision and efficiency, according to the company.

In 2021, China launched the CR450 science and technology innovation project, one of 102 major projects outlined in the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025). On December 29, 2024, a prototype of the CR450 electric multi-purpose rolling stock was unveiled in Beijing, boasting world-leading key performance indicators. To date, the CR450 high-speed train has completed a series of tests on several high-speed railway lines in China, achieving a single train speed of 453 km/h.

Wang Lei, a designer at CRRC Changchun Railway Vehicles Co., Ltd., identified reducing drag as one of the main challenges. He explained that increasing speed from 350 to 400 km/h increases drag by 30 percent, and 95 percent of this drag is due to air.

To overcome this aerodynamic drag, the CR450 train has a longer, smoother nose and a 50-ton weight reduction, reducing aerodynamic drag by 22 percent.

The superiority of China's high-speed railway lies not only in its robust "steel frame" but also in its advanced "intelligent brain."

The CTCS-3 ATP (automatic train protection) and ATO (automatic train control) system, independently developed by one of the Chinese research and design institutes, was implemented for the production of CR450 electric multi-functional rolling stock.

The above-mentioned system is reported to have full intellectual property rights and automatic driving functions such as automatic station exit, automatic driving, automatic overspeed protection, automatic station stop, and coordinated operation of carriage and platform doors.

To support the development of railways in western China, a new-generation train control system has also been developed that ensures reliable operation in harsh weather conditions.

This train control system, integrated with the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System, integrates multiple data sources such as satellite positioning, electronic maps and speed sensors, greatly improving the accuracy and reliability of train location.

By the end of 2025, the total length of China's high-speed railway is expected to exceed 50,000 km. Furthermore, China has demonstrated extensive experience in building a high-speed rail network that is not only extensive but also intelligent, flexible, and future-oriented.
